What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Oh. I ABSOLUTELY agree - but if they’re so proud of being English and the English flag they should be proud to fly it from their own house.
Perhaps local councils and public buildings should start raising the English or Union flag, it may be the only way to
claim it back from the racists.

The Clash nailed it 45 years ago when I was going on anti Nazi marches.

Taking off his turban, they said, is this man a Jew?
'We're working for the clampdown
They put up a poster saying we earn more than you
When we're working for the clampdown

We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

The judge said five to ten but I say double that again
I'm not working for the clampdown
No man born with a living soul
Can be working for the clampdown

Stand up to this, that and t'other - always pushing against something, whilst never moving forwards. The good old habitual great unwashed protestors.

The ones othering immigrants and different ethnicities are the ones going backward clearly. Blaming foreigners for all problems happened before, in the 1930s. Different target but same playbook exactly.

Funny you should say that about 1930s vibes. Same target, same playback.

Entirely. And the lobotomised ones who spread conspiracies to delegitimise the media, decrying them as “main stream media” are also following that playbook - the “Lügenpresse” of the past. It’s grim. And these so-called patriots believe they’re on the right side. So easily manipulated.

I'm very late to the party but a few nights back a group of about 6 lads (all white / early 20's) came to our road with a ladder and systematically hung Union Jack flags from all the lamp posts along the road. It was about 7pm and I only saw retrospectively on the camera.

I'm still not clear if this is an actual movement / affiliation with right wing groups / targeted incident but I'm deeply troubled by it. It feels intimidating, hateful and provocative in the worst way.

I'm on a small group chat for the road (about 8 houses but it's a large London road so easily 100 houses on total) and none of us know what is going on. Some flags have been removed, I assume by other residents not in the group chat? But those of us in the chat are a bit stumped.

It's a "niace" road in a "niace" part of the borough. There are people from lots of different cultures and nationalities on the road. Very middle class (although I am poor and rent don't own) so I'm not sure what the point of the flags are?

I've emailed the council and happy to provide the footage to them / police if it is a police matter.

yellowspanner · 23/08/2025 17:15

I think we should only allow the Union flag or the flag of one of our 4 nations to be flown in the UK.
I don't care what your heritage is nor what colour your skin is. It's simple. We fly an appropriate UK flag.
And no I haven't put a union flag up outside my house. There has been one there for years.
I am proud of this country and not ashamed or humiliated to show it

TaupeLemur · 23/08/2025 17:31

The reason flags are allowed to stay on lampposts in NI is because the unemployed toe-rags pasting them everywhere have all day long to keep putting them up, again and again, whereas the council workers and police generally have other things to do than take down flags all day long.
They also have plenty of time for day drinking, and rioting too when feeling hard done by anyone trying to remove offensive flags…so the authorities pick their battles.

TaupeLemur · 23/08/2025 17:33

And people are too scared to take flags down because they’d be risking getting beaten up or burnt out. In England though we aren’t quite at that stage, so ordinary people do seem to be removing flags

Only to resell them ...

Sinking feeling that another Krystallnacht is on its way. Utterly grim.

How about the black country ?

What do you think of the flags?
Hufflemuff · 23/08/2025 17:45

Meh... the intention behind it is racist really isn't it. Let's be honest. We might frame it in pride, but people are doing this in protest at immigration to "show them" (them being the immigrants and the government). They've been emboldened by the recent protests outside hotels and the gobshites like Tommy Robinson in the news.

An Indian family (lived here since the 80s) had bricks thrown through their windows and car last night with the words "go back to where you came" attached to the bricks a few miles from us. I am heartbroken for them. Im completely convinced its connected directly to the flags going up - although of course not everyone putting up flags would do that...

Shares in glaziers look lie a good bet then.

I'm still hoping that there are more simple fuckwits than actual fascist sympathisers and that they'll be easily discouraged once the fun is over.

ghostyslovesheets · 23/08/2025 18:50

Tamworth’s ‘protest’ fizzled out after an hour as people got bored 😂😂😂

Two people I know removed flags from the overpass out side the hotel - you know flags hung in a public place - they were chased by a gang of ‘peaceful’ protesters who called him and his wife cunts, paedos, wankers and various other polite forms of address

perhaps the funniest bit was on man telling the police it was robbery and he had a receipt for his flags to prove it 😂

police let my friends past and told the flag shagger to do one.

best bit is the ‘patriots’ filmed it and posted on Twitter - fools 😂

ghostyslovesheets · 23/08/2025 18:51

Oh and - police ‘whose flag is it’?

idiot ‘England’s’ 😂

Yes, but it’s been exposed that this movement is funded and pushed by far right groups. People joining in implicitly are supporting that.

It’s a police matter when they’re hanging UK flags in the UK? What on earth….
