What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

I think that anti-fascist march might well be the biggest one yet. I know people who've never been on a march in their lives who are talking about going, including one who's 80.

I know a few people in wheelchairs who would go.

Do any of them have any idea what it’s for? I’ve been on TR Twitter and I’ve got no idea what they even actually want.

Fascist Tommy Robinson has just been released from prison and has announced plans for a national mobilisation in London. We stopped him before and we’ll do it again. March with us on 13 September to stop the far right.

This so reminds me of the GB News thread.

Oh, that's where you get your information from. What a surprise to the rest of us. They should have you on commission, 10p per quote sounds about right.

Stand up to this, that and t'other - always pushing against something, whilst never moving forwards. The good old habitual great unwashed protestors.

Serpentstooth · 23/08/2025 15:07

I just read on this thread 'factual understanding is so gaslighting'. I won't embarass the writer further by naming them. This is the level of comprehension attained by many of the flag wavers. 12 years minimum of education. It's scary.

They're up in my town. All I could think about was they're the wrong way. If you're going to put them up on random places (because they are) and be so patriotic (or racist), at least have them the right way!

Glad I had the sneer on education, on my bingo card.

I reckon it's a subtle campaign by the far left to portray racists as thick, ill educated and lazy.

Well demonstrated dangermoo, thank you for illustrating my point.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 23/08/2025 15:26

Late to the party and I'm not going to read 33 pages of people pretending scribbling on roundabouts is patriotic. It makes me embarrassed to be white English. You want to fly a flag, do it on your home, in your garden or out of your window. Don't be that twat who cable ties the St George Cross to lamp posts in an attempt to intimidate. Or can't even paint a straight line on a roundabout. Fuck's sake.

SerendipityJane · 23/08/2025 15:31

Part 1, section 132 of the Highways Act 1991 (Tory government).

Of course I suspect some people here will accuse Keir Starmer of inventing Time Travel to go back and deliberately pass a law against lamppost flags.

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

Don’t get me started on NI and ‘flegs’ !!! There they are very much tribal and often used to intimate, mark out ‘territory’ and in general are very politically motivated.
They’re also known every other fracking lampost, particularly during the ‘marching season’ when Protestants put Union flags and Orange order flags and red hand of Ulster flags on every lamppost.
They’re also known to paint said lampposts red, white and blue and kerb stones red, white and blue.
lets hope that the same bigotry doesn’t seep into England. Though I think it may already be too late.
England seems to be having a massive identity crisis.

TaupeLemur · 23/08/2025 16:14

If people want to fly the flag of their country, crack on, but hang it in your garden or on a flag pole at the front of your house. Like
Americans do - you can get holders online that attach to walls or your door.
Sticking them on lampposts is tacky and clearly meant to intimidate rather than show real pride.

Which is insulting of course, because racism isn’t limited to the lazy, ill educated thick -
as Reform is so clearly proving.

Catinabeanbag · 23/08/2025 16:26

I live in Brum and they're popping up in various places. I don't like them, personally. I don't mind the Union flag being flown from public buildings, but the England flag has too many assocations with En-ger-land football thugs, the far right, racism, and 'patriotism' dressed up as nationalism. And if you say you don't like it you're dismissed as woke lefty and not proud of your country. It feels threatening.

Agree or you are racist and get the pile on. I laugh when I see the numerous notifications I get on these threads, like this. I can always predict what the reply will be to my post, especially when I see certain user names.

ThinWomansBrain · 23/08/2025 16:36

I was hacked off that someone had hung one outside my flat - and that was when I thought it was to do with rugby or football.
I now realise more likely to be in connection with racist protests in the area (the racists were outnumbered 3:1 by the counter demonstration, and by and large were not "locals" as they had claimed). - so I'm glad they've gone.

I think the point is it allows people to hide their racism. It's anonymous. In much the say way swastika became ubiquitous.

That being said, I have zero truck with anyone who attacks any property or causes any damage for any reason. People should be free to fly their flags if they want without fear. In the same way the people in hotels should be free to go about their lawful business without any fear.

Oh. I ABSOLUTELY agree - but if they’re so proud of being English and the English flag they should be proud to fly it from their own house.
Perhaps local councils and public buildings should start raising the English or Union flag, it may be the only way to
claim it back from the racists.

I agree - it extends very much across the left. As Diane Abbott and Jezza Corbyn are so clearly proving.
