What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Please dont come after me with your shit because trust me i will not feel ashamed for feeling how i am feeling ..
Your naivety of what is blatantly staring you in the face is so dangerous.

I've no idea what you mean by "what is blatantly staring you in the face".

What is it that you think that you think is dangerous, and should I be afraid of it, @pavillion1?

Oh its not being taken over that happened ages ago , we are now being wiped out .

Wiped out?! By what? How?

Are my friends and neighbours, who appear to be busy going about their everyday lives, a figment of my imagination?

Its tedious having to keep repeating myself. Crossing the borders to uk without a passport is illegal.

As has been repeatedly said, crossing the borders to the UK without a passport is not, and never has been, illegal. I know you want it to be illegal, but it is not illegal.

No point. PPs spouting about ‘illegal immigration’ just won’t accept that they’re wrong. We’re banging our heads against a brick wall trying to explain the law to them.

I think you will find your side made the insults and condescending with it .. Factual understanding is so gas lighting to the people who experienced visual evidence on a daily basis is beyond worrying

This "visual evidence"... is it in the room with you now?

They don't give a shit about the law.

You've been given the law that says asylum seekers aren't at any stage 'illegal' and choose to believe social media and the right wing press.

Bbc uses the term 'illegal immigration' in the article it states 49,000 illegal immigrants entered UK in the last 12 months.

They're wrong and you know that now. Asylum seekers are not illegal. Illegal immigrants are failed asylum seekers and people who overstay their visas.

Yes, I said:

They do indeed exist.

Crucially, they’re not the people on boats. Yet.

They may become illegal immigrants, but the boat people are just plain old asylum seekers.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_of_England

It is an unfortunate by product of history that the flag of st George may have originated with the crusades which were a series of battles against Muslim countries and had the goals of wresting Jeruslam from Islamic control. Nothing can be done about the flags history but I can see there being an akward historical resonance in cities like Birmigham with a high proportion of Muslim residents (especially if we couple the current conflict in the middle East to it). You could say there are people who think it more politic at times just to display the Union flag with its combination of flags.

I think as A nation we wrestle with our flag as it is obviously a symbol of our great country and its people but we can't simply ignore the fact the flag was present for the centuries where Britian was an invading colonizing force.

I think for the above reasons Muslims may feel a less than complete endearment to the flag of St George and seek other regions symbology to identify with.

It's also unfortunate that the Mosleyite neo-fascist group chose League of St George for their name. They are so far-right that the UK National Front banned its members from joining the League.

Its not immigration though. Its MASS immigration. Just think about the maths. Its at a level that cannot be sustained...we cannot even house and look after those already here.

Where's the threshold at which simple immigration becomes "MASS immigration"?

It would be helpful to give this some sort of scale, so that we're all clear about the point at which you consider immigration to become excessive.

I’m astonished that 41% of respondents feel that flying our own flag is racist. And I don’t believe for a single second it’s because they might end up being a trip hazard.

I’m beyond disappointed, and totally bloody fed up, to read this.

If racists like the EDL and all the other knuckle-dragging fascists stopped carrying them on marches, people might start to feel differently.

I don't personally feel it's racist, but when I see an England or UK flag on a house outside of a major football tournament or royal jubilee, it makes me wonder if that house is occupied by racists and/or fascists.

If you google images of the National Front marching at the "battle of Lewisham" in the 70's, you might be able to understand why it makes people of my generation feel uncomfortable.

We could house and look after those already here, but successive governments (of both parties) have failed to do so.

I’ve just seen on our Local Facebook page a call to go to London with lots of precious St George’s flags on the 13th September-which so happens to be the day of the anti facism March. What do we think the motive for flag waving that day will be? And what do we think will happen when the ‘happy, just proud to be English, just love our flag’ brigade brush up against the anti fascists?
Anyone that claims not to see this for what it is should be ashamed.

I think that anti-fascist march might well be the biggest one yet. I know people who've never been on a march in their lives who are talking about going, including one who's 80.

Do any of them have any idea what it’s for? I’ve been on TR Twitter and I’ve got no idea what they even actually want.
