What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Where do you think the money is coming from? The money tree?

The money to support people arriving on small boats comes from general taxation, yes. As has been the case since the small boats started arriving in 2018ish.

Any tax rises in 2025 won't be because of the people arriving in small boats.

Midnightlove · 22/08/2025 23:33

We know where the money is going, thats the problem isn't it.. certainly isn't going to the failing NHS or something that would actually benefit British tax payers.

Tory funding hotel owners might be an answer

yellowspanner · 23/08/2025 00:01

These illegal immigrants are being housed and fed at our expense.
Our taxation is paying for their support. If they weren't here no hotel owners, of any political persuasion would be benefitting.
And when Reeves increases my taxes I will blame these illegal immigrants.
And putting Palestinian flags up in Jewish places is not at all the same as putting up the British or the English flag in England.
I don't live in Palestine so I don't want to see their flag up anywhere in the UK.
I want and expect to see either the Union flag or the cross of St George. It is our national flag so it should be flown from all public buildings

healthyteeth · 23/08/2025 00:03

So many people sucked in by the rhetoric that immigrants are the cause of all their problems.

Immigrants used as a scapegoat and a distraction from the reality of what is wrong with this country.

You’d think we’d have learned from our mistakes from Brexit.

Ooh yes, like Alex Langsam, multi millionaire owner of shithole chain Britannia Hotels. Handily for him, he's also a non dom. So he gets loads of tax money providing fucking awful rooms to asylum seekers but doesn't pay any tax himself. Winner. Definitely worth risking your life to climb a lamppost for that particular lad.

LoudSnoringDog · 23/08/2025 00:25

If Birmingham City Council are going to take flags down then they also need to take down the Palestine flags, you can’t keep one up but not the other.
I’ve not seen any flags in the area where I live yet, but imagine they will be out at some point.

HauntedBungalow · 23/08/2025 00:28

If you don't like what Birmingham city council are doing wrt flags feel free to exercise your many democratic rights and engage in dialogue with them. None of us on here can do much about it.

My heritage is Irish. - I live in the Uk - can I fly my flag? Is it just ‘brown peoples’ flags you object to or all non English ones?

As far as I'm concerned these people are in the country illegally. And to make matters worse our taxes are paying for their accommodation and food. As a result it's likely our taxes will go up in the autumn budget .
We should either turn the boats round or deport them back to France ( a safe country) immediately they arrive.
And you are tying to persuade us that these people who wish to settle here are intimidated by our national flag.
You are clearly joking ( or stupid)

Those of us who are British born and raised see the threat from the far right. We faced it before. We know what it is.

You want to pretend this recent flag shagging isnt racist?

Why is it happening now?
Have you put a flag outside your house?

And why is it an organised campaign? Not some random outburst of patriotic love?

I will not tolerate patriotism when it masks something much darker - something my beloved grandfather fought a war against

Absolutely this.

This is the same thing you posted before with different words

they are not illegal

since they are here legally waiting for their claims to be processed where should they live?

Tax increases solely due to a tiny amount of immigrants- ok

so Jewish feeling threatened by flags has no impact on your understanding

some people born in the uk want to fly a flag of their heritage- is this not allowed

public buildings- no issue at all

You'd think so, but No.

They take no responsibility for fucking the UK's economy and zero responsibility for dividing the country. I remember when a core tenet of the right was personal responsibility. All the far right do nowadays is tell lies, blame others and repeatedly make the same mistake of following the same populist, fuckwits who benefited from the chaos and damage they inflicted on Britain in the first place.🤦‍♀️

I'm proud of my country for being so diverse and taking in people who are fleeing war and want a better and safer life. I'm not proud of the idiots who protest outside hotels and wave their flags because white skin is superior.

Indeed. it wasn't long ago that people were offering rooms in their homes to people from Ukraine, fleeing war. Yet non white skinned people fleeing war aren't deemed fit to be accommodated in a very far from luxury 'hotel'. The protesters and flag flyers certainly don't represent me, they make me ashamed to be English.

That is not an observation it is a judgment.

When that judgement is based fact, it's an observation.

Its tedious having to keep repeating myself. Crossing the borders to uk without a passport is illegal. This country is currently, dangerously being overtaken with ILLEGAL immigrants. Yes some claim Asylum once here.

Its tedious having to keep repeating myself. Crossing the borders to uk without a passport is illegal.

As has been repeatedly said, crossing the borders to the UK without a passport is not, and never has been, illegal. I know you want it to be illegal, but it is not illegal.

You are factually wrong. They are not here 'illegally'. It is not illegal to enter the country without a passport or prior permission. As much as you wish it were illegal, the fact is it isn't. And there is no such thing as "illegal immigrants", at least not in the UK.

This was done the other day. Only the English flag is slated. Simple as that.

You've never spent much time in NI (which is part of the UK) or bothered to learn about its history then.

It is an unfortunate by product of history that the flag of st George may have originated with the crusades which were a series of battles against Muslim countries and had the goals of wresting Jeruslam from Islamic control. Nothing can be done about the flags history but I can see there being an akward historical resonance in cities like Birmigham with a high proportion of Muslim residents (especially if we couple the current conflict in the middle East to it). You could say there are people who think it more politic at times just to display the Union flag with its combination of flags.

I think as A nation we wrestle with our flag as it is obviously a symbol of our great country and its people but we can't simply ignore the fact the flag was present for the centuries where Britian was an invading colonizing force.

I think for the above reasons Muslims may feel a less than complete endearment to the flag of St George and seek other regions symbology to identify with.
