What do you think of the flags?

1000 replies

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Correct. with a passport!!!

You seem very confused. People travelling from France to the UK need a valid visa/passport. People seeking asylum can enter any country by any means under Article 31 of the Refugee Convention.

Ok again rather than making a silly comment- discuss the post and make counter points - I’ve just posted facts 🙄

I think that poster was on your side dude?!!

ghostyslovesheets · 22/08/2025 19:32

MiloMinderbinder925 · 22/08/2025 19:28

You have a right to work under the Convention. People complained that they were competing with asylum seekers for jobs and Blair stopped asylum seekers working. They are entitled to support while their claim is being processed.

They could work after 6 months but in 2002 that changed due to concerns around economic migration - yes - which is what people would support, no?

Ok - then apologies to @healthyteeth - the page is taking ages to load and my brain is Covid fried!

Evidently not. People are constantly complaining about asylum seekers scrounging.

See the flag shaggers have been out in force.

This just makes any further comment you make ignored.

If you can not debate without insulting others you make yourself irrelevant.

MaidOfSteel · 22/08/2025 19:47

I’m astonished that 41% of respondents feel that flying our own flag is racist. And I don’t believe for a single second it’s because they might end up being a trip hazard.

I’m beyond disappointed, and totally bloody fed up, to read this.

Talking about discussion, it would be great if you presented the facts about asylum seekers being illegal.

pavillion1 · 22/08/2025 20:01

I will just add to those who have not yet been directly affected by what is going on in the Uk right now and are commenting and calling people far right and racist i just want to make you aware that this situation is growing at an alarming rate .. It will darken your doorstep probably very soon and i can tell you from first hand experience all sympathy goes out the window very quickly .

Most motorway bridges on the M5 have England flags attached to them….

This is nothing but scaremongering.

Reform UK MPs, councillors and supporters, Farage, Yaxley-Lennon, Tice, Trump, Elon, red top tabloids et al; are doing nothing but scaremongering and creating hostile political division.

Our doors are already darkened by far worse issues in this county than “people coming on the boats” could ever attempt.

i live in Epping , One hotel got burnt down because some residents felt they were not being housed quick enough , They then got moved to another hotel were they tried to burn that down .. failed thank god but instead sexually assaulted a 14 year old girl .
Nothing anyone will say will make me change my view on what is going on right now .. Seeing the flags gives me comfort.

That's not how discussion works. I've presented the facts that asylum seekers aren't illegal and you and other posters are adamant despite the facts that they're illegal, therefore you show people your evidence for your claims.

this is so disingenuous. Nobody objects to a flag flying for jubilee or for the football. But this sudden flag thing is grim and there’s a clear intent to inflame communities.

People like you ???

Covidwoes · 22/08/2025 20:38

@pavillion1not a defence, but at a recent protest I drove past, I saw “Protect are comunity” and “Britan says no to the boats.” I’ve also seen a lot of similar comments online that are hard to read due to no punctuation. It’s just an observation.

@MaidOfSteelIt absolutely isn’t racist to fly our flag. However, when it is done to inflame communities rather than be patriotic, we then have a problem.

Its tedious having to keep repeating myself. Crossing the borders to uk without a passport is illegal. This country is currently, dangerously being overtaken with ILLEGAL immigrants. Yes some claim Asylum once here.

Yes - putting a flag up in your garden, on your car etc - that’s one thing.

putting flags up all over town - illegally, as part of a campaign called ‘raise the flag’ backed by the likes of (Cartman voice) Tommy - that’s not showing you patriotic love it’s a political gesture and not one based in goodness
