What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Ah so you don’t actually know they are ‘illegal’ you just say they are - wrongly

Bathingforest · 22/08/2025 19:09

More of them, please. Good gran loves them

So explain why it’s wrong? Which bit it illegal

I doubt the PP will answer this question. They don’t have an explanation as to why it’s illegal to claim asylum. They’ve just heard politicians speaking about ‘illegal immigrants’ and read it in newspapers like the Daily Mail and then parrot the term on MN threads and no doubt in RL as well.

Who’s authorisation?

The home office .. You really should know this for yourself

CatamaranViper · 22/08/2025 19:11

I live in Northumberland and I don't really identify with being 'English'. Even from where I am, England feels very removed. I don't recognise a lot of the culture and half the gov couldn't care less about us or know anything about the north. I don't mind seeing the Northumberland flag, but the English flag feels hostile and I don't feel included in it.

No that’s not right - the home office makes the decision once you have arrived (legally) in the UK and made an asylum claim.

I do know a bit as I work with UASC

healthyteeth · 22/08/2025 19:11

See the flag shaggers have been out in force.

No. The thousands of people crossing the channel Daily are doing so illegally.

Seeking asylum in the UK is not illegal if entered with authorisation...

You've forced me into citing the Convention, it's Article 31. The UNHCR clarifies :

UNHCR's guidelines emphasise that Article 31 ensures that refugees can gain access to international protection effectively, without being penalised for breaching immigration or other laws due to their unauthorised entry into a country.

It should also be noted that UNHCR stresses it prefers using "irregular" instead of "illegal" for unauthorised refugee entry, underscoring that seeking asylum through such means is not a criminal act.
https://www.ein.org.uk/news/unhcr-issues-important-guidelines-refugee-conventions-article-31-clarifying-non-penalisation

Now you know the facts.

UNHCR issues important guidelines on Refugee Convention’s Article 31, clarifying non-penalisation of refugees for irregular arrival

UNHCR's preference for use of "irregular" instead of "illegal" underscores that seeking asylum is not a criminal act

The flags represent the people who aren't ashamed to be out on the street bawling and shouting about how English they are. So am I. It's embarassing to be associated with these people simply by accident of birth and the flags demonstrate to me exactly who they are and who should be avoided.

MyLimeGuide · 22/08/2025 19:11

How? It’s not illegal in any way to enter a country by boat, train, plane, horse etc to claim asylum

But they are illegal immigrants until they are granted citizenship

Exactly.

It’s the intention behind the sudden displays of loads of flags. And importantly WHO has whooped them up to do this… bet we can all guess.

It's not. Asylum seekers can choose where they seek asylum and Article 31 of the Refugee Convention says that asylum seekers can enter a country by any means to claim asylum.

It should also be noted that UNHCR stresses it prefers using "irregular" instead of "illegal" for unauthorised refugee entry, underscoring that seeking asylum through such means is not a criminal act.

They're not. They're in the UK lawfully while their claims are processed.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/08/2025 19:20

Tomorrow is Slavery Remembrance Day in Liverpool - city built on Slavery - a city with some of the oldest black and Chinese communities in Europe - and the flag twats have chosen this day to March through town.

Black peoples, Asian people, Chinese people and many others are PART of British culture and have been for years - but this group coming in will mark their culture by getting pissed, setting fire to bins and throwing bricks (again) how proud they are of England.

Oh and as a Christian country you’d have no Christmas if Mary and Joseph hadn’t been able to flee Herod and seek safety in another country

you are an asylum seeker- legally until your case is processed, with no right to work and no recourse to public funds

Ok again rather than making a silly comment- discuss the post and make counter points - I’ve just posted facts 🙄

Yes - or to get on a plane or train - the manner of entry isn’t the issue if you are claiming asylum

You have a right to work under the Convention. People complained that they were competing with asylum seekers for jobs and Blair stopped asylum seekers working. They are entitled to support while their claim is being processed.
