What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

I think the flags are good. We have them where I live and have had for some time.
I am proud of my country and will happily fly our flag.
If some people feel threatened by our flag then I assume they don't love living here .
And yes the asylum seekers are illegals. They have come here illegally, many for economic reasons .

Apparently its embarrassing saying they are illegal 😬

It’s hard to discuss the issue when people don’t understand it. It’s not illegal to claim asylum or to arrive by any means into a country to do so.

if you don’t have a valid claim you are refused asylum and sent back.

As to why it’s mainly men and boys can you not work that out? Is it difficult? The journey- full of criminal exploitation and sexual abuse, the fact that men and boys will be forced to fight? Is it too difficult to understand why you wouldn’t send your daughter?

No they’re economic migrants many of them - because their countries have despotic leaders they are all entitled to claim asylum whether they are at any risks or not - and if they are so desperate for safety they would stay in France . They destroy their papers so who knows who they are, most get to stay.
In their shoes I would do the same.

Most are embarrassed by being factually incorrect but some own it. You go!

Flaskfan · 22/08/2025 18:49

So. Flags. I'm on a fb page, which is ostensibly about the condition of the big road that runs through my area of the UK. It tells you how busy the road is and what crashes there have been.

Today, the dickhead that runs it is banging on about flags. People are getting a kicking for suggesting that a fb page about the road is not the place for it.

I think we should embrace it and just start plastering our houses in flags. All the flags. Make it Glastonbury every day. Beats covering your house in boring grey.

Its not factually incorrect.. They crossed many safe countries that they could have claimed asylum. They have chosen not to and came here through improper routes .. They're illegal.. That is Fact .

I think its a general feeling of community after getting a court ruling to stop a hotel housing illegals.

Illegal is an adjective, not a noun. They are not here illegally until their asymlum claim has been considered and rejected.

Repeating something incessantly doesn't make it a fact. There's no regulation that asylum seekers can't choose the country they seek asylum in. According to the Refugee Convention, asylum seekers can enter any country and not be penalised if they're claiming asylum.

Do you want me to provide the articles in the Convention?

Why would you assume that? @PrincessOfPreschool wrote That was me. I'm not a leftie. I'm a non white person with non white children who feels threatened.

How do you get dont love living here from that post? Many people love this country and we don't appreciate it's flag being used to intimidate people and mark territory on lampposts. Like dog piss.

Pairymoppins · 22/08/2025 19:02

Agree with this. It’s really hard to argue with most people on this as they are usually so uninformed and quite often to be honest thick.

It’s legal to claim asylum. Asylum seekers have to be housed and fed as they can’t work while their claims are processed. We need to process claims faster. We need to do better at returning those whose claims are rejected. We need to do more to deter small boats. We need to deport criminal asylum seekers and refugees. We don’t need to paint red crosses on roundabouts.

Seeking asylum in the UK is not illegal if entered with authorisation...

Totally agree - we do need to speed up the process so people aren’t stuck in hotels for years and those with no claim can be returned. We also need to stop the boats because people are dying and criminals are exploiting people.

Safe routes or processing in Europe would be better but Brexit makes that hard
