What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Not everyone wants to live in a simulacrum of the US. And if we are to import some US culture, I'd hope it could be put to better use than a few useless flags that add fuck all to making the UK a decent place to live.

Exactly- put it much better than me😂

I'm all good for fascism thanks!

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2025 14:28

I am suspecting that the first gentle touch of the next climatic storm we experience will whip these tiny symbols of expression into the dust in a metaphor for life as the juggernaut of shifting climatic tectonics carry on trampling us underfoot.

Flying our national flag isn’t racist.

pavillion1 · 22/08/2025 15:06

I love the flags and would happily donate to keep them going .

Interesting to see the areas the flaggers are targeting - Bradford, Birmingham (long settled Asian communities), Worcester (dunno the significance - anyone else have any ideas?) York (long standing huge horse race this weekend - lot of drunk visitors over the bank holiday). Not Grimsby or Hull or anywhere else they already have traction. They're after a ruck.

Our little village in Essex has them the whole way up the road 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

It was on the news last week (a lot) about councils in the UK removing England flags and union jack flags and keeping other flags up such as palestine. That is why brits are putting these flags up now, in revolt to what the councils did. (Or did I imagine all of that??)

Flying our national flag isn’t racist.

It's racists flying the flags though.

The 'far' right who have traditionally and historically been vocal anti-semites now have an uneasy alliance with the Israeli government and right-wing pro-Zionist Jews as they have a common enemy in the Palestinian people and Palestine supporting Muslims in the UK.

I live in an area with a high Jewish population. My Jewish friends here feel really uncomfortable that Yaxley-Lennon and his ilk are suddenly apparently allies of Jews. They are not fools and know it’s driven by anti-Islamic fervour.

It's racists flying the flags though.

The movement is being led by Tommy Robinson and Britain First. You either see them as 'true patriots' or far right scum. Fly your flag accordingly.

Why, do you think?

I mean, it's obviously not a spontaneous expression of uplifting joy in one's country. And they're not appearing in secure reform areas. There'll be a reason why they've chosen you. Do you know what it is?

halfpastten · 22/08/2025 15:27

Flags make me uneasy.
I feel uneasy driving through Northern Ireland where union Jack's or Irish flags mark out territory.
I feel very uneasy when I see a pride progress flag as it makes clear that people who don't buy gender b.s. will be under attack.
I think other flags being imposed or tacitly accepted by public bodies has contributed to this flush of union and England flags and I totally understand and support that part if it. Public bodies should only fly the national flag.
But overall, within a context of conflict, which this is, the flags still make me feel uneasy.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 15:27

Sweetjain · 22/08/2025 15:18

And you know this how?

Because they're a far right quasi fascist group funded in part by Britain First, which is a neo nazi organisation.

I think it’s obvious that they are politically motivated.

But people are allowed/entitled to make a point providing that they aren’t being violent/breaking the law.

Unless it's a Palestinian flag.
