What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

I generally seem to see St George flags flown with 'nationalist, but in a bad way' vibes 🤷

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 22/08/2025 15:54

Reminds me of Sheldon and Amy Farah Fowler.
Fun with Flags.
One for big bang theory aficionados.😁

I love the flags and would happily donate to keep them going .

I'd rather donate to a childrens charity or one for victims of domestic violence.

I guess we all have to work with what's important to us.

When I see a St. Georges flag, I think it was chosen because getting a Union Jack the right way up is beyond some people.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 16:00

Getting the st Georg flag the right way up is also beyond many, looking at the state of them.

What is "morally superior" about trying to help the vulnerable and abused ?

pavillion1 · 22/08/2025 16:10

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/08/2025 15:43

Why dont you just buy yourself one and fly it from your house? Or do you already have one up?

I was saying this today at work ... i think i just might

Its not morally superior to help vulnerable and abused but it IS to announce you do on mumsnet!

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 15:25

Why, do you think?

I mean, it's obviously not a spontaneous expression of uplifting joy in one's country. And they're not appearing in secure reform areas. There'll be a reason why they've chosen you. Do you know what it is?

I think its a general feeling of community after getting a court ruling to stop a hotel housing illegals.

TwoTierBbq · 22/08/2025 16:19

It's abominable that flying our own flag is causing issues at all it shows how buried we are under stupid ideas.

I think if you've become accustomed to treating the flag as a revered symbol - more reserved for special occasions - then the cheapening of seeing it everywhere can be upsetting.

Call it "flagflation". The more often you see a flag, the less it's worth.

Same as royalty really. I mean if King Charles popped down the High Street every day, you'd probably lose the majesty of the monarchy pretty quickly.

Billy Bragg on Facebook:. 😎
There have been a lot of stories in the media this week about the number of St George flags suddenly appearing on lampposts in some areas, and I think people are right to be concerned that the England women’s rugby world cup team is not getting the same level of visible support from local councils as the Lionesses did during the recent European Championship. I can understand why rugby union fans are frustrated at this seeming lack of support for the Red Roses, especially as England is hosting the competition.

Like everyone, I’d love the unifying spirit of the Lionesses victory in the Euro final to last a bit longer and as the England women are favourites to win the title, we can look forward to a few more weeks of watching England at their best. Nothing like a great sporting event to bring us all together in these fractious times. So thank you to all those who have taken the time to buy a flag and climb a lamppost to show their support our women and the game of rugby union in general. It’s the kind of civic patriotism that makes me proud to be English. C'mon you Roses! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 22/08/2025 16:59

If they were really being flown to be patriotic then that would be fine. We all know that’s not why they’re being flown though don’t we.
