What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Which is why I very clearly stated that I wasn't sure of the facts of the article but it IS what I'm assuming to be the case.

They are the rabble responsible for calling a hoax far right meeting. Left wing shit stirrers, who thrive on division. The irony.

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2025 13:33

Hardly "rasie" is it ?

More "put up limply"

It's embarrassing when your own countrymen can't put a fucking flag up properly. No wonder we are a laughing stock of the world.

GrouachMacbeth · 22/08/2025 13:34

Palestinian flags?

Dangermoo · 22/08/2025 12:58

You won't blame Jews for all that is happening? What is happening, is irrelevant to this country. The safety of Jewish people - living in this country - is of more significance than the conflict in the Middle East. This is why 'far' right people are pissed off about the different treatment - once again.

The 'far' right who have traditionally and historically been vocal anti-semites now have an uneasy alliance with the Israeli government and right-wing pro-Zionist Jews as they have a common enemy in the Palestinian people and Palestine supporting Muslims in the UK.

Which is, AGAIN, why I clearly stated that the article couldn't be proven/verified, BUT IT IS WHAT I ASSUME TO BE THE CASE, mostly due to how much attention it's getting on SM.

It seems pushed.

When I went to work in the USA I noticed that almost every house had a flag proudly displayed. This was back in the 1990s and long before the present regime. It is a pity that British people do not feel that they can freely display the flag of their country because of the way it has been politicised.

Can both not be important?

Maybe you think it looks nice but many don't.

And that's OK.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 13:40

Interesting to see the areas the flaggers are targeting - Bradford, Birmingham (long settled Asian communities), Worcester (dunno the significance - anyone else have any ideas?) York (long standing huge horse race this weekend - lot of drunk visitors over the bank holiday). Not Grimsby or Hull or anywhere else they already have traction. They're after a ruck.

So where does Corbyn and his antisemitism fit in? Please do go on.

I think it’s lovely seeing the flags, I’ve always liked the Union Jack and I think young people need to be encouraged to take a pride in their home, as they’ve been barraged with guilt tripping about Britains past, and they don’t know wether they’re coming or going! They know the whole world seems to be besotted with Downton Abbey / Bridgerton type Britishness yet are supposed to be ashamed of Britain of that period, too. I think they are very confused and could do with some TLC and Britain-Positive input. It’s very healing.

Depends on your outlook. If you love your country and its culture, you will embrace the flag. If you have saviour complex and want to apologise every five minutes, you will ridicule it. I personally have a soft spot for the appearance of the Union Jack.

EmpressoftheMundane · 22/08/2025 13:47

This thread has moved on my thinking. I am very stubborn about the idea that no one should be ashamed of their flag and that all of us regardless of race should reclaim it.

However, I do not want to see a dynamic take hold where different groups are marking territory with permanent flags and trying to intimidate each other. This would be a disaster.

People can do what they like on their own property, but I think the councils need to move quickly to remove all flags on public property that are not being flown officially. In my area a bunch of Palestinian flags went up on lampposts shortly after October 7, the council took them down with in days. By moving quickly other groups didn’t get angered and decide to put up opposing flags. It’s been a flag free zone since then. I think this is the right approach.

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 13:56

Other areas they're targeting : Tynemouth, Newcastle, but not eg Middlesbrough. So they're near places with high numbers of reform voters but not in those places. Warwick too, apparently - I don't know Warwick too well so don't know the significance of that. Redditch ... near Birmingham I guess.

This is not the cultural norm in Britain though, if we have to do what the Americans do, isn't that another form of Americanisation. Maybe my upbringing was unusual but flags displayed outside of sporting events, Royal ceromines and possibly Morris dancing, if we were visiting an English village at that time of year, was not a familiar sight.

No, didn't you know that compassion is finite.

Edited

I think the shaming impulse is strong with those self righteous ones… and because they aren’t allowed to fat- shame, or gay- shame, or all the other ‘ shames’ we are so used to ( ginger- shame, ‘ four eyes’- shame, etc etc etc) they are now ‘ history shaming’…they just gotta make others feel bad about something.

I do think ‘ history shaming’ Will die out, it’s as toxic as fat- shaming, etc.

Ceremonies not "ceromines"!

HauntedBungalow · 22/08/2025 14:07

Parts of London too. Can anyone confirm which areas of London they're popping up in?

Maybe worth noticing that these are all urban areas. They're going for places with high population density. Also I guess if they went to villages it would be obvious that they weren't local.

That was me. I'm not a leftie. I'm a non white person with non white children who feels threatened.

That's the reason these flags have been thrown up. To intimidate you and your family and others.Sad I hope they come down soon.

It's disgusting that people's real fears are being minimised in a pathetic attempt to "own the libs".Hmm

EchoedSilence · 22/08/2025 14:13

Flag shagging racists. I'd avoid anyone or any business flying the flag just now.

I would say it is a cultural norm in Scotland and Wales too from what I’ve seen on these threads - not to the extent it is in the US but it’s bad we can’t be proud.

Not everyone wants to live in a simulacrum of the US. And if we are to import some US culture, I'd hope it could be put to better use than a few useless flags that add fuck all to making the UK a decent place to live.

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2025 14:18

Well it's obviously the ones with no graffiti and litter. Surely the people putting them up would make sure their area is clean and tidy and something to be proud of.

I literally don't know anybody that lives up to these stupid stereotypes, basically humourless. We (DH and our friends) don't have saviour complexes, we definitely aren't all morally perfect and nobody fits into these neat binary political positions- these ideas are fictional, created to satisfy the narcissistic impulses of the people spouting this nonsense!
