What do you think of the flags?

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

People have had years and years to put up flags if they want to. Suddenly asylum seekers are all over the news and NOW they decide they need to put them up?

This. It's not "I'm just proud of my country and think flags look pretty!" at all. Come on.

I didn't at any point say England and Palestine are the same?? Or that English flags are in support of Jewish people i have no idea where you got this from.

So why would English flags go up in retaliation to Palestinian ones?

They’re leaving the Palestine flags up because of what they represent. Which is something significantly more serious than “I don’t like HMO’s, hotels and brown people.”

There is no need to bedeck the UK in its own flag, and if people want to enter into a flag retaliation game, to make a point, the English flag isn’t it.

Because people are bending themselves into pretzels and reaching trying to justify the sudden flag appreciation.
It may be the case for some but I doubt that will be the main reason. It's giving bad faith , but that's just my opinion.

I support Jews and would never blame all of them for what is happening, again just my take.

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

Definitely no flags in northern Ireland, well known for the lack of them

Well I think it is though.
The discussion isn't just about st George flags, also about Palestine flags and other flags so it is relevant.

Classic denial, that was!

I had flags up for VE and VJ Day. I always put flags up for things like the Olympics, jubilees, royal weddings etc. any excuse really as I think they look summery and cheery.
going to have to stop as I don’t want people thinking I’m racist.

Please don't stop popping flags up for your celebrations of special events. Don't let horrible people with their ridiculous slurs put you off. Many, many countries have flags flown all over them, why should this country be forced to not fly our own.

ForPearlViper · 22/08/2025 12:48

Pollqueen · 21/08/2025 20:10

That's rubbish. There was a Sikh gentleman on the news last night discussing this, proudly draped in a union jack because he's British. My local Indian restaurant displays st george and Indian flags when there's a cricket match on. Why are we not allowed to fly our flag when pretty much every other country displays theirs with pride?

Deleted. Quoted wrong post.

Teenagequeenwithaloadedgun · 22/08/2025 12:51

If the flags are put up to celebrate Britain and everyone in it, all good.

If the flags are put up to show that immigrants aren't welcome, as seems to be the intent in the majority of cases, then I don't support it.

It depends on the intent behind the flags. My local Facebook group is full of the joys of the flags, linking them to Reform, immigration and Nigel Farage, so I'm not keen.

The Palestinian flags represent a lot more than you think! You think it's about freeing civilians from oppression. You're not on your own with that one. As for the discussion of that flag being irrelevant, it's very much relevant when it's, as per usual, the white English man and woman, who bears the brunt of scrutiny without looking at the whole picture. There is a faction of society getting away with behaviour because weak officials think its easier to let them get on with it, for fear of aggression. It's that very aggression which is a central tenet of this discussion.

You won't blame Jews for all that is happening? What is happening, is irrelevant to this country. The safety of Jewish people - living in this country - is of more significance than the conflict in the Middle East. This is why 'far' right people are pissed off about the different treatment - once again.

So, just humour me.

Is the safety of Muslims who live in this country also important?

Because those who wave flags around tend to also be anti-Islamic. So maybe, we could stop just being anti other peoples religions.

Of course they are important. All bigotry needs stamping out. If the St George flag is seen as racist, I'm highlighting that it's not just one ethnoreligion that's being targetted. In other words, I'm pointing out the double standards, because it's easier to jump on one bandwagon, than navigating between a few - simultaneously.

This may be ignorance on my part, but I don’t see Palestine flags as anti Jewish.

I see them as anti-dead children.

Yes, I mean it is a very easy concept to understand- context is everything but many are finding this hard to grasp.

We actively turned down a perfectly sized and respectable home, because the next street had 3 front gardens with flags in.

Couldn’t have avoided it any harder if we tried 😂

I dont blame you. Nothing more likely to reduce house prices here than flags, used like dog piss, to mark territory on lampposts and telegraph poles.

I was delighted when my street was de-flagged. Residents can and do fly them from their own houses for cultural occasions and football matches. Then they take them down after. But no more tatty rags flying all year round.

Christ. I just can't tell any more 😫😂

UsernameMcUsername · 22/08/2025 13:23

I think I'm just tired of flags in general - British, English, the various sexuality / gender identity ones, Palestine. It was always noticeable on Twitter back in the day how the absolute worst people all had flags in their bios. I think the best solution would be a consistent ban on all flags-on-lampposts type stuff - fly the national flag(s) on public buildings and that's it.

SerendipityJane · 22/08/2025 13:24

If they are put up properly, there are a celebration of our heritage and nations.

If they are at half mast they are signals of a nasty narrow minded racism trying to cloak itself in patriotism.

‘Operation Raise the Colours’ Organised by Well-Known Far-Right Extremists – HOPE not hate

I'm not 100% sure about the truth of this report but it IS what I assume when I see it and I wouldn't be surprised if it were the case, especially with the amount of it I'm seeing on SM (feels like a 'pushed' campaign, rather than an organic one).

For me, any and all campaigns supported by Tommy Robinson, Britain First etc I 100% will not get behind.

These are racist thugs with a very clear agenda.

Which is why I very clearly stated that I wasn't sure of the facts of the article but it IS what I'm assuming to be the case.
