What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

Operation raise the colours is the best thing I’ve seen in ages that has united people in many towns and cities.

‘I have only ever hoped for one thing... to see this kingdom united under this English crown! All men are born to die. We know it. We carry it with us always. If your day be today, so be it! Mine will be tomorrow! Or mine today and yours tomorrow. It matters not. What matters is that you know, in your hearts, that today you are that kingdom united. You are England. Each and every one of you - England is you! And it is the space between you. Fight not for yourselves, fight for that space! Fill that space! Make it tissue! Make it mass! Make it impenetrable! Make it yours! Make it England! Make it England! Great men to it. Captains, Lords, great men to it!’

What a lot of drivel. In fact there is an even better word for it. TOMMYROT.

Looks like the Lambrini is going down well.

PrincessOfPreschool · 21/08/2025 23:05

The flag by itself means nothing. The intent behind flying it is everything.

This. As a PP said.

I hate the flags at the moment. I'm fine with them usually but right now I know what they stand for and it's actually quite intimidating to me, married to an immigrant, with mixed race children.

What gives me the fear is not the fringe racists walking around with their flag 'capes' and shouting 'no lefties welcome', it's the (Tory) councils that are putting them up. This is some high level institutional intimidation to anyone who is not white and English.

The jailbird? Not very patriotic is he, breaking his country's laws.

I'm in Cardiff. Someone on a local FB group suggested putting them up o be patriotic. I suggested that they should learn Welsh, or open A Welsh History book, or bring back A great tradition like Mari Llwyd, I wrote in Welsh at first so of course none of these "patriots" understood..

Oh that’s fabulous - I’m all in favour of a Christmas horse skull bride ❤️

waaaay better that a flag roundabout

Oh are you going to tell me about the Jews, who support Palestine and oppose Israel? Are we going into gaslighting territory?

Well no, I wasn't - but not every Jew is negatively affected by seeing the Palestinian flag because not every Jew has reason for internalised guilt.

seaelephant · 21/08/2025 23:11

I hate the false naivity on these threads. Nothing exists in a vacuum. On an official building, the union jack is basic decor. Outside a house in Glasgow? I'm avoiding whoever lives there like the plague. It's not the flag itself, it's the intent behind it

Classic! I'm sure every 80s/90s parent shut their teen up with the promise of a 'babysham' at Christmas 🤭. I wonder if it still exists?

Snowball (advookat and lemonade) that stuff went down way too easy ! I bet it was horribly calorific too !

The guilt isn't coming from the persecuted. Yep, we've now entered that zone.

Women don’t feature then? Just brave fighting men (rolling wheeliebins at police equals the battles of old).

my grand father - a desert rat and DD veteran would have told this lot to shove their flags up their arses. But then he was in a war fighting that kind of shit.

What have any of these ass hats waving shit placards at hotels ever actually done for England? Volunteered in food banks, worked in the NHS? Actually been in a war?

😆 🤣 we had style back then x anyway, I'm going to raise a toast to Lucy Connolly. I think she's going to be inundated with offers to share her story. I hope she makes a mint.

There is no NI flag because it should be part of Ireland

No they’re on facebook complaining about what other people are not doing for them.

ItscoldinAugust · 21/08/2025 21:30

Does the same apply when someone is waving the Palestine flag? People seem quite happy to wave those in huge numbers in London even the day after a massive terrorist attack on it's neighbour.

Yes.

chickenlettuceunderbacon · 21/08/2025 23:22

In nearly every other country, their flags are flown with pride. I have lots of friends in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, pretty much all of them proudly display their flags. Heck, my Danish friend even adored each and every birthday cake with mini-Danish flags.

I genuinely don't understand why the St George's Cross is so maligned to the degree it can't be flown. I get that for many, football thugs and jingoistic racists have sullied it, but surely the answer is to re-embrace it positively. The more common a site it is, the more it becomes part of usual day to day life.

🤷🏻‍♀️
