What do you think of the flags?

Latesummersunset · 21/08/2025 18:05

Apologies if this has been done already.

I live in one of the areas where the flags were started. We couldn’t understand what they were for until it popped up in the news. Apparently the councils are going to be taking them down.

I don’t really have much of an opinion either way but my concern is that they’ll soon become tatty, fall down and leave a mess everywhere. But it seems lots of people are loving them. They do look quite cheery at the moment.

What do people think?

Yabu - they are a mess/racist/health and safety hazard

Yanbu - they are cheerful and patriotic. Keep them

It's pathetic. They're blatantly tying them where they shouldn't just so councils will take them down and they can bleat about "not being allowed to fly our flag". Like antagonistic schoolchildren spending hours on the wind up waiting for teacher to "pick on them". Fucking bellends.

SquishedMallow · 21/08/2025 22:47

Well ok. That's fine and up to you. But not everyone who waves their country's flag has bad intentions, such as racism.

No but in the current climate some people are flying them to make immigrants feel unwelcome. I want no part of that.

KnickerlessParsons · 21/08/2025 18:11

Wales and Scotland fly their respective flags everywhere. I don’t know about NI, but it’s time England took some pride in its flag too (though not PRIDE)

The fact that you don't know about NI and flags speaks volumes

😅 ooh Ken - I'm innocent 😅

I don't think she was with Ken then was she ? Wasn't she with that guy ... Someone Rasheed? I can't remember his first name. But I think she was Deidre Rasheed at the time .

You've reminded me of another classic Corrie story : do you remember Peter and the AA meeting ? That was comedy gold !

Yet, nobody thinks about the effect the Palestinian flag has on the Jews. Much of that is with the intent of causing distress. However, lefty luvvies, in their usual form for hypocrisy, will keep on that bandwagon. The flag couldn't possibly mean anything but calls for peace 🙄

I was just going to say the same but that's how they roll. Give it large about showing compassion for others, then come out with toxic insults.

Thought this lot were all about the free speech. Surely they'd welcome it.

Unfortunately, it does seem to be a Modus operandi. It doesn't help the cause.

But essentially, it's nice to see the British and English flags.

Why? Why is it "nice to see a flag"? Why is patriotism "nice"?

For the same reason it's nice to support a football team or to have a street WhatsApp group or to join the conservatives or to call yourself a millennial. It gives people a feeling of belonging in a group they have something in common with.

Flags? For the rugby women’s World Cup? England do have a good chance of winning! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

channelislander · 21/08/2025 22:57

I rather like the Union Flag, and at certain events I find a lot of joy seeing the flag flown and red, white, and blue bunting lining the streets. Here in Guernsey the Union Flag is a prominent symbol of Liberation Day each year, alongside our own flag, and I've never seen any complaints about it. Each year in May I see the flag as a celebration of freedom from occupation, fascism, and oppression. I'm not a royalist by any means, but I feel similarly about seeing the flags at jubilees and other such celebratory occasions. As PPs have said, it's all about intent.

I can't say I'd feel the same way in any old town, though, on any old day. Bunting and jubilation in the town centre is one thing, but if a lot of regular residential streets suddenly decided to take to patriotism I would find it curious and, in the current political climate, a little concerning. I don't think the flag should be a symbol of racism, monoculturalism, and xenophobia, but it would be naïve to pretend to be unaware of such connotations. I would love to see the flag uncoupled from such beliefs and discourse, but I don't know if that's going to happen anytime soon.

All that is to say I wouldn't feel particularly welcome on a street lined with the St George's Cross. And though not English, I am white and British, so I can only imagine how non-white Brits and immigrants must feel about it.

Operation raise the colours is the best thing I’ve seen in ages that has united people in many towns and cities.

‘I have only ever hoped for one thing... to see this kingdom united under this English crown! All men are born to die. We know it. We carry it with us always. If your day be today, so be it! Mine will be tomorrow! Or mine today and yours tomorrow. It matters not. What matters is that you know, in your hearts, that today you are that kingdom united. You are England. Each and every one of you - England is you! And it is the space between you. Fight not for yourselves, fight for that space! Fill that space! Make it tissue! Make it mass! Make it impenetrable! Make it yours! Make it England! Make it England! Great men to it. Captains, Lords, great men to it!’

What do you think of the flags?

Oh are you going to tell me about the Jews, who support Palestine and oppose Israel? Are we going into gaslighting territory?

That's great when there's a football tournament on. It's not necessary otherwise. We're all living here and part of the same community, we don't need a flag or badge of allegiance. Making other people feel welcome and part of the same community is about how you conduct yourself every day. It's about words and actions, not flags.
