Joint income of 7596 including child benefit

verdict…
more than enough
enough
could be better

i know it’s dependent on outgoings but but as a general income.

Sounds like quite a lot to me but depends on how big your mortgage/rent is , amount of credit card debt etc.

skippy67 · 21/08/2025 11:20

It's OK.

GuestSpeakers · 21/08/2025 11:20

Google would have taken you here: https://ifs.org.uk/tools_and_resources/where_do_you_fit_in

Helpfullright · 21/08/2025 11:21

Depends on loads of other factors, including pension contributions.

But the OP wants to know what WE think. Because it really matters...

indoorplantqueen · 21/08/2025 11:22

Sounds like a lot but depends if you don’t have kids or have 5. Have a huge childcare bill, mortgage or outgoings.

arcticpandas · 21/08/2025 11:22

If you have got 10 children it's not a lot. With 2 it's great

Icanttakethisanymore · 21/08/2025 11:23

i know it’s dependent on outgoings but but as a general income.

There is no 'general' judgement anyone can make without the context of outgoings. You could either be destitute or rolling in it.

Fineapple1 · 21/08/2025 11:25

Dunnocantthinkofone · 21/08/2025 11:26

More than enough then

lotsofpatience · 21/08/2025 11:26

Just over breadline

Kuretake · 21/08/2025 11:26

Before or after tax and pension contributions?

It's similar to me excluding bonus and I earn £160k so seems like that's quite a lot?

MidnightPatrol · 21/08/2025 11:27

Broadly meaningless without knowing your particular circumstances, but at a headline level it’s quite good - like two people earning ~£75k each.

I see you have a low mortgage and no childcare - so basically £6k for bills, day to day life… that’s pretty good going IMO!

AgathaCristina · 21/08/2025 11:28

It seems OK foe 2 children plus two adults with an almost 2K mortgage but depends of how much do you spend per month, how many activities for the children? New clothes or do they share clothes? ( younger child using the oldest child's clothes) . Do you go on holiday? Any pets at home? Expensive hobbies like golf etc? Everything depends..

MegaMinion34 · 21/08/2025 11:29

It's close to 100k a year so yes, pretty good. On MN though it's probably just above poverty line 😉

Cassy5 · 21/08/2025 11:29

I’m surprised you get child benefit on that income? Does it include other benefits?

Complet · 21/08/2025 11:29

Surely what you think of it is more important? Some will say it’s fine, some will say not enough, some will say it’s plenty.

What are you attempting to feel from this? Inadequate? Unambitious? Guilt? Superiority?

Yes after tax and pension contributions of 5% for me and dh pays 8%

Genuinely don't know what we (in our circumstances and with our personalities) would do with that much money each month, though it wouldn't be enough to move us into private education and chauffeur territory obviously. We have a really wonderful life on c. £4800 pm. We had a good life with holidays and occasional meals out on £3300 pm.

But if we had childcare costs or a massive mortgage or child maintenance to pay or a taste for exotic holidays or were paying thousands a month for medication or extra kids or private education fees it would be a different story.

Dontcallmescarface · 21/08/2025 11:33

Well it's 20k more than ours so it'll do me.

It's loads more than 100k a year salary to net that.

We don’t spend it all every month no, we’re just finished some renovations at the moment so we had extra costs for furnishings etc . We have 1600 left and payday is tomorrow so not extravagant.
one main holiday a year and a few weekend breaks for dh and I.
one of each dc so no clothes sharing
they do sports but luckily fees are very affordable for them.
