Joint income of 7596 including child benefit

verdict…
more than enough
enough
could be better

i know it’s dependent on outgoings but but as a general income.

I can't work out how you can be entitled to child benefit.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 21/08/2025 11:35

Well, it’s a lot more than mine

Fineapple1 · 21/08/2025 11:36

Genuinely don't know what we (in our circumstances and with our personalities) would do with that much money each month, though it wouldn't be enough to move us into private education and chauffeur territory obviously. We have a really wonderful life on c. £4800 pm. We had a good life with holidays and occasional meals out on £3300 pm.

But if we had childcare costs or a massive mortgage or child maintenance to pay or a taste for exotic holidays or were paying thousands a month for medication or extra kids or private education fees it would be a different story.

i don’t feel we could afford private school, there’s none nearby anyway so it’s not an option.

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 21/08/2025 11:36

Impossible to say without knowing your outgoings. I doubt you could afford private school even for one child.

I agree, no private school here anyway but no we wouldn’t afford that. I’m not bothered about that anyway

Same.

Full child benefit for two kids is £187 a month according to Google AI, so £7408 from salaries. Half of that is £3704. But to get that, after tax and a 5% pension, they’d need to each be earning 62k. Child benefit isn’t payable if either parent earns over 60k.

Other benefits, OP?

Anyway, yes, with two kids and two parents each earning over 60k I’d say that income should be fine.

skippy67 · 21/08/2025 11:20

It's OK.

Ok? It's a very high income! This isn't average.

Wirdle · 21/08/2025 11:40

Well we feel very comfortable on around 7k so sounds great to me, not sure how you get CB though?
We save, invest, overpay the mortgage, consider private ed, no debt, it's a nice place to be.

Cassy5 · 21/08/2025 11:42

I’m guessing this will turn out to be a drip-feed goady thread where most of the income is from benefits.

Why do people keep saying this? You're all acting like we have no control over our outgoings. It's bizarre. No one HAS to have a large mortgage or expensive hobbies, clothes, holidays etc.... €7596 per month is a great amount to have. If people choose to piss it all away on unnecessary things then that's on them but that doesnt change the fact that this is still a good amount.

Livedandlearned · 21/08/2025 11:44

Interested to know what difference it makes OP.

TeenLifeMum · 21/08/2025 11:46

Significantly above average, but you can see that for yourself so feels like a brag.

It's always like this on Mumsnet it's really strange. As though having a very high income but then spending it all means you don't have a very high income. Surely the point is that you have the option to have the big house, private school, birkin collection, whatever.

DontbesorrybeGiles · 21/08/2025 11:47

Whenever someone posts this kind of thing they are always earning loads. Is it ok to only be saving £1500 each month? Will my children starve on my salary of £90k? How can I ensure I can give all my kids £100k each?
Are these threads just for boasting purposes or can people genuinely not think for themselves?

Haha exactly. It’s not enough if you want to run a private super yacht but you should live within your means and they clearly have significant “means” compared to most.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/08/2025 11:47

Why are you asking? What's made you doubt things and look for reassurance that having more than enough is okay?

Overthebow · 21/08/2025 11:48

On paper your income is very good, but it depends on outgoings and how much you save/have in savings. Your mortgage is high, and your pension contributions are low.

IlovePhilMitchell · 21/08/2025 11:49

Curious to know how you are intelligent enough to earn this salary between you but not to workout if it’s decent? Is it easy? Do you need simple maths or a brain for it?

DryAndBalmy · 21/08/2025 11:49

That’s lots!

Keep your outgoings low and build up your retirement savings/ wealth (stocks and shares ISAS are a great starts after you’ve paid into your pensions) and enjoy!

Sdpbody · 21/08/2025 11:50

Kuretake · 21/08/2025 11:34

It's loads more than 100k a year salary to net that.

If it is two salaries, they'll both be on around £60k each.

Edited

Upper limit is 80k, not 60k.. its a sliding scale above 60k. Plus the 60k is after deductions like pensions (but not tax)

Cranberryavocado · 21/08/2025 11:50

You have loads of money, and loads of spare money. Compared to the average and with an average lifestyle.
not really enough for supercars and designer bags or 3 x 5 star long haul holidays a year.
But enough to live comfortably and not stress about money at all and live a nice life.

Kuretake · 21/08/2025 11:51

Sdpbody · 21/08/2025 11:50

Yes, is that different to what I said?

TerrorAustralis · 21/08/2025 11:52

Fineapple1 · 21/08/2025 11:30

Yes after tax and pension contributions of 5% for me and dh pays 8%

Why the disparity? You should be putting in the same as your partner (more if you took time off to look after the DC).

SwirlingSea · 21/08/2025 11:52

What prompted you to ask this question op?
It sounds like it’s enough for your family but it could always be better. Good to still have ambition.
