Does this chicken look cooked to you?

Dh has just done it on the bbq and thinks it’s fine and i’m too fussy, I’m not but admittedly the only thing i’m ever cautious/fussy over is meat being cooked enough, I tend to really overcook mine

I can’t eat this 😬

That definitely does not look cooked. I would have refused to eat it like that.

WalterMittysPuppet · 20/08/2025 16:56

I don't know about "raw" but some pieces look like they could have done with a bit longer.

OP you say you and DC ate the better-done pieces and discarded the rest, so I think your chances of escaping unscathed are very good. Eating undercooked chicken no longer seems to be a guaranteed route to illness these days anyway, it seems that the nasty pathogens are limited to less than 10% of meat meant for human consumption. And also, your immune system will quickly zap a low number of unfriendly microbes, if they're there.

As for your DH, sod's law says he'll be totally fine. Somewhere on MN is a tale of someone's DH taking a pack of sausages, well beyond expiry date - which had gone MOULDY - out of the dustbin, and cooking and eating them.

Blueuggboots · 20/08/2025 16:56

Yep, I agree with PP. get a temperature probe, provided it’s over 75 degrees c in the middle, it’s cooked.

Firstbreezeinmonths · 20/08/2025 16:51

I cut through it to check and no pink bits etc, just white and very soft, tasted ok, but mine is usually almost too cooked, so that’s why I wasn’t sure

It's too hard to tell from the picture but if what you've posted was the case then it was obviously cooked. Not sure why everyone is saying the chicken looks raw and pink though. Are people thinking the onion is the chicken or do people not know what cooked chicken actually looks like?

If you cut it open and it was white all the way through with no pink bits then you will be fine and I can't believe you've posted about this when the chicken wasn't even pink at all.

Have thrown all of Dds away, she said she ate a ‘Bit’ of chicken, she thinks less than one piece, so hopefully ok 🙏 and mainly ate corn on the cob and coleslaw etc. I ate a few better done pieces then just felt really put off, Dh ate a few skewers full 😬

Definitely get a meat thermometer
Ive had campylobacter but it doesn’t start for a few days usually. Never eaten chicken since

stayathomer · 20/08/2025 17:05

Sorry op but you might be lucky

ThreeTescoBags · 20/08/2025 17:05

Easy for me to say but try not to worry too much OP. Yes, it does look undercooked but the odds are still in your favour that you won't be ill. Undercooked chicken is more likely to have harmful bacteria on than other foods but that doesn't make it a certainty that it does.

It's more likely then not that you'll be perfectly fine. Just make sure you're drinking plenty and have a think about a contingency if you are poorly.

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/08/2025 17:06

BlueMum16 · 20/08/2025 16:52

Nobody can tell you if one piece or four pieces will make you ill.

Hospital would come after several days for constant vomiting or diarrhea if it doesn't stop (3 or 4 days in my DH case) to be put on drip and anti sickness tablets.

Only time will tell.

Try not to worry. It might have been fine. You won't know until tomorrow.

When chicken got me, it wasn’t the next day, it was about 4 hours later.

I'm guilty of virtually incinerating any chicken I cook too - a while back DH cooked a massive chicken quarter from the butcher for me. I ate a bit of the outside but anxiously cut down to the bone to check - it was still raw in the middle! I posted here about it (under a different name) panicking that I had eaten some of the cooked part (but what if it was contaminated by the uncooked bit), and one of the first responses was "You ate some chicken that was cooked, the end." 😂

I was fine, and I think that you will be too. The bits at the back of the picture look OK to me anyway, but I sympathise with the feeling of dread. Think positive thoughts, you ate a small amount of what WAS cooked.

ohbee · 20/08/2025 17:09

Firstbreezeinmonths · 20/08/2025 16:23

It was normal inside as in white and soft/stringy, I just have mine really well done, almost burnt

Would 4 pieces be enough to make me ill?

I ate ONE piece of chicken undercooked BBQ chicken a few years ago and ended up with campylobacter. I believe just a fraction of that would have been enough to give me it though.

Vodkamartini3olives · 20/08/2025 17:11

Was the BBQ on?. Nothing on that plate looks like it's ever been in the same neighborhood as a grill.

It looks like it was cooked over a tealight
how can you cook chicken with no colour unless you’re poaching it?!

TerminalMoraine · 20/08/2025 17:14

@Firstbreezeinmonths
Do you not put any seasoning on your meat before putting it on the BBQ?
It doesn’t take long and would drastically improve the flavour. Putting chicken, in a bit of plain yogurt plus some seasoning for example, would help keep it moist especially breast which is prone to getting dry and tough when cooked.
I would not be keen to eat what looks like almost raw chicken, so I hope you all are well with no bad after effects

It can also take days…

Maddy70 · 20/08/2025 17:16

No. The veg doesn't looked cooked enough either!

bobby81 · 20/08/2025 17:26

I agree with others that you should invest in a temperature probe. They are great & you can feel confident that what you’re eating is safe.

MaleficentQueen · 20/08/2025 17:32

I wouldn’t eat that, personally.
I’m quite paranoid with chicken, and I got myself a temperature probe, specifically for when I cook chicken, or pork.

I like to make sure it’s well over the recommended temperature before eating, though.

ItsameLuigi · 20/08/2025 18:17

Did he use candles to cook the chicken?

grumpygrape · 20/08/2025 18:20

Firstbreezeinmonths · 20/08/2025 16:20

Dead?

Well, that was only one of the options and possibly the least likely (and a bit jokey) but it depends if the chicken was carrying anything and none of us know about that.
We also can't really see if the chicken was cooked properly nor tell how much it would take to make you ill.
I'm afraid only time will tell.
I prefer to marinade chicken, cook it conventionally and only finish it on the BBQ.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 20/08/2025 18:28

SleeplessInWherever · 20/08/2025 16:03

There is absolutely no way that would have passed my lips. None.

The texture is killing me looking at it.

Agreed. It sounds like you were expected to not complain because husband’s ego is more important.

Not a chance in hell I’d have eaten it.

Moondoggle · 20/08/2025 18:34

A good vet'd be able to save that.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 20/08/2025 18:34

It looks slimey, pink and very, very raw.

There is no way on this planet that would go anywhere near my mouth.

DoAWheelie · 20/08/2025 18:40

I reckon a good vet could still save that piece in the middle

Katemax82 · 20/08/2025 18:42

From a bbq id expect it to have a bit of a chargrilled look to it. My husband has an infuriating way of undercooking chicken, hence we have a meat thermometer
