To have moved her baby?

In asda this morning. Woman has her head stuck in the reduced freezer grabbing everything she wants. She has parked her trolly - with baby in it - across the freezer so nobody else can get in it. I didn’t actually want to be in it but I did need the freezer next to it - which her trolly was also preventing from opening. I said “excuse me”. No response. I said it louder - no response. At this point an elderly woman came up behind her and tried to get in the freezer, around the trolly - no good - around the woman - woman positions herself in front of old woman. Old woman says “excuse me” - no response. She taps her on the shoulder - no response.

So - not willing to stand there like an absolute clown waiting for her to allow me access to the freezer I simply move her trolly gently out of the way. Suddenly she’s aware of the world around her and says “what are you doing??” I say “getting in to this freezer”. She says “you can’t just go moving someone’s baby!” (Hearing problems ruled out!!) I say “I tried to get your attention but you didn’t respond. Elderly woman then says “EXCUSE ME! I want to get in this freezer!” Woman blames ME for the delay saying I moved her baby 😂

WIBU to move the baby (inches!)

YABU for being judgemental about people buying reduced things.

Burnout50 · 20/08/2025 12:42

You didn't move the baby. You moved a shopping trolley. And removed an obstruction.

Campingisnexttogodliness · 20/08/2025 12:42

Unless you removed the actual baby yanbu.. You moved a trolley.

No im not, I often get stuff from the reduced freezer but I don’t practically sit in it and ensure nobody else can get near it.

How is that judgemental? Seriously?

if you're shopping, all you do is 'grab what you want.'

She’s not being judgmental, just factual and indicating she’s likely to be in there a lot longer than grabbing a single regular item.

I would have done the same- but your language suggests you may not have been as calm and measured as you suggest! Oh, and it doesn’t matter how old the other woman was.

Evergreen21 · 20/08/2025 12:50

I don't think you did anything wrong She was ignorant and ignored two people trying to get her attention. She isn't hard of hearing and could have at least acknowledged you both. You moved the trolley a little, you didn't pick up her actual child and move them out of the way. Searching for bargains isn't an excuse to be unaware of your surroundings or using your voice.

Nope, not on this occasion. I just wanted a Greek yogurt from the freezer next to it. I would maybe have had a Quick Look in if it hadn’t been blocked off but I wasn’t that bothered - I just wanted my yogurt

Op she says she wanted to 'get something' for herself.

OP says she 'just wanted' something.

But the other woman is describing as 'grabbing what she wants'.

'Grabbing what you want' implies greediness.

Do you not think that, since time is linear, perhaps the language OP has used is a reflection of how she feels about the confrontation at the end rather than how she conducted herself earlier in proceedings?

HappyNewTaxYear · 20/08/2025 13:03

Why do people think that ‘ignorant’ means ‘rude’?

Sasha07 · 20/08/2025 13:03

Moving her baby... 🤣 sounds like she had that outrageous response waiting, using shock value to belittle you for daring to do your shopping. You've moved the trolley, enough to squeeze in. You didn't pick her baby up or put ithe baby in any harms way... She likely, purposely, used the baby in the trolley as a shield to keep others from getting the better bargains before she'd had a look through it all.
What is happening to society, so much bizarre, entitled behaviour!

Well yes, obviously, that's the whole point of the thread.

Any other searing observations?

thinklagoon · 20/08/2025 13:07

Unless you lifted the baby from the trolley or span the trolley violently round, of course YANBU. But I can see the thread is going to go off-piste in several unrelated tangents so settling in for a good “ignorant v rude” bunfight with a side of “grabbing?!” 🍿

Survivingnotthriving24 · 20/08/2025 13:34

I'm not sure on this one and might go against the grain, she was actively shopping and I imagine placing items in her trolley, not just blocking the way. Why do you and the other woman have a right to get in in front of her when she was there first? Admittedly she could have acknowledged you when you said excuse me, but I wouldn't like someone moving my trolley with child strapped in either.

Also, her being able to hear you when facing you doesn't rule out a hearing impairment, plenty of people are deaf on one side/struggle to hear if there's background noise or rely on lip reading.

spoonbillstretford · 20/08/2025 13:35

YANBU. I regular move people's trolleys if they have left them and they are in the way of something on the shelf.

Possibly. But you can only go on the language people actually use. I’ve said I thought the OP was right in what she did. But “head stuck in the freezer grabbing everything she wants” is a very judgemental at of looking at the world. And the insistence that the other woman was “old” “elderly” annoyed me too!

🙄Don't be ridiculous. There's no 'judgement' OP is just explaining the scene!

MsCactus · 20/08/2025 13:44

I actually disagree with the majority of posters - you can't move someone's baby like that. It's like wheeling away a disabled person in a wheelchair because they're next to something you want. It's totally unacceptable.

You couldn't wheel away an able bodied adult so you shouldn't wheel away a baby. What if the mum wasn't paying attention and the baby got lost or someone took off with it? You should have continued to get the woman's attention imo - I'd be absolutely furious if someone wheeled my baby away from me. Just be patient and wait for her to move.

Allseeingallknowing · 20/08/2025 13:47

Bit worrying that she wouldn’t have been aware of anyone abducting her baby!
