To have moved her baby?

EllyRoff · 20/08/2025 12:36

In asda this morning. Woman has her head stuck in the reduced freezer grabbing everything she wants. She has parked her trolly - with baby in it - across the freezer so nobody else can get in it. I didn’t actually want to be in it but I did need the freezer next to it - which her trolly was also preventing from opening. I said “excuse me”. No response. I said it louder - no response. At this point an elderly woman came up behind her and tried to get in the freezer, around the trolly - no good - around the woman - woman positions herself in front of old woman. Old woman says “excuse me” - no response. She taps her on the shoulder - no response.

So - not willing to stand there like an absolute clown waiting for her to allow me access to the freezer I simply move her trolly gently out of the way. Suddenly she’s aware of the world around her and says “what are you doing??” I say “getting in to this freezer”. She says “you can’t just go moving someone’s baby!” (Hearing problems ruled out!!) I say “I tried to get your attention but you didn’t respond. Elderly woman then says “EXCUSE ME! I want to get in this freezer!” Woman blames ME for the delay saying I moved her baby 😂

WIBU to move the baby (inches!)

You didn't move the baby. You moved a shopping trolley. And removed an obstruction.

This

I actually disagree with the majority of posters - you can't move someone's baby like that. It's like wheeling away a disabled person in a wheelchair because they're next to something you want. It's totally unacceptable.

You couldn't wheel away an able bodied adult so you shouldn't wheel away a baby. What if the mum wasn't paying attention and the baby got lost or someone took off with it? You should have continued to get the woman's attention imo - I'd be absolutely furious if someone wheeled my baby away from me. Just be patient and wait for her to move.

This is a ridiculous analogy
the mum clearly isn’t paying attention and that’s on her

mumofoneAloneandwell · 20/08/2025 13:50

Yanbu

People go nuts over the reduced section in Asda 😄

ThatsNotMyTeen · 20/08/2025 13:51

CurlewKate · 20/08/2025 13:37

Possibly. But you can only go on the language people actually use. I’ve said I thought the OP was right in what she did. But “head stuck in the freezer grabbing everything she wants” is a very judgemental at of looking at the world. And the insistence that the other woman was “old” “elderly” annoyed me too!

Certainly where I shop the reduced fridge/shelf brings out the vultures who can only be described in this way

If you were shopping and turned around to grab stuff to put in your trolley, would you genuinely be OK to see your baby wheeled off halfway down the shop?

I don't have any issues with moving other people's trollies, but it's so dangerous to wheel off a baby (or any vulnerable person tbh). It's a completely different situation to moving someone's trolley and I think OP is BU

Halfway down the shop 😅

It sounds as though it was a metre at most

She didn’t move the baby. She moved a trolley. I do the same if people have their head up their arse and block shelves with their trolley for an unreasonable period. She didn’t wheel the baby away, don’t be so daft. If the woman was that bothered she could have spent less time snouting like a truffle pig hoovering up the bargains

Why do people think that ‘ignorant’ means ‘rude’?

Because language changes over time as words acquire additional meanings? Anyone who does cryptic crosswords can vouch that most words have multiple meanings (and the crossword compiler will rarely use the primary meaning).

To have moved her baby?

Well if people behave in greedy ways they have to expect other people may judge them for it.

WhatNoRaisins · 20/08/2025 13:58

I always thought ignorant when used in this context was a short way of saying ignorant of the way to behave properly which is another way of saying rude.

As for the woman, when you're in a public place you have to be at least somewhat aware of your surroundings.

Pricelessadvice · 20/08/2025 13:58

You should have lifted her baby out the trolley and hidden it.

Wow, that’s quite a reach! It’s nothing like moving a person in a wheelchair out of the way. The woman already wasn’t paying attention to her baby, so she’s lucky this is all that happened. OP - YANBU.

Gloriia · 20/08/2025 14:03

I wouldn't move anyone's trolley let alone one that had a baby in it!

It is frustrating yes but the correct thing to have done in this situation would have been to wait or look at other items and then return.

JudgeJ · 20/08/2025 14:05

EllyRoff · 20/08/2025 12:53

Nope, not on this occasion. I just wanted a Greek yogurt from the freezer next to it. I would maybe have had a Quick Look in if it hadn’t been blocked off but I wasn’t that bothered - I just wanted my yogurt

A combination of people using their trolleys like a wagon train to block others and those pesky doors all the supermarkets now have make getting at stuff very difficult. I got stuck behind one woman holding the door and phoning to ask someone which item they wanted, no-one else could get anything.

It's also highly dangerous for people to be asking this woman for her attention and her to be literally ignoring them. What if they wanted to inform her that someone had snatched her baby and run off with it? She clearly couldn't give a fck that people were trying to get her attention! This woman is the one putting her baby in danger by being completely unaware of her surroundings and whats going on around her.

Also, moving a trolley slightly to one side is NOT "wheeling it off" halfway down the aisle. Dont be so ridiculous.

user1492757084 · 20/08/2025 14:08

I would not have moved the trolley.
I would not have said excuse me; the woman was busy in that space.
I might have spoken to the baby, knowing me.
I would have waited until she had all she needed and moved away or I'd gather other food elsewhere and come back later.

hatboxes · 20/08/2025 14:12

But, but, Greek yoghurt shouldn’t be in a freezer?

Wheeled her baby away 😂😂😂 I literally moved the trolley inches from where it was. If I’d took off with it and ditched it in the next aisle, you’d have a point.

Also, I didn’t want to be in front of her, I wanted access to the fridge she wasn’t using

Then this woman will continue to inconvenience other shoppers every time she goes out.

If she didn't like the OP moving her trolley out of the way, maybe next time she won't just ignore someone who is trying to get her attention.

Lots of people inconvenience us when we go shopping. It really isn't ok to move a trolley with a baby in it. You wait or return it is simple.
