Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

I'm black and it really pissed me off when I heard it on the radio and hour ago. There is enough racial tension at the moment, and shit like this just adds fuel to the fire.

Yes, there are racists who have commandeered the flag, but if idiotic officials purge cities of the flag, then it actually becomes theirs.

There are so many far more useful things we could be doing to improve race relations, instead of removing flags few people actually care about.

This.

So show us a Greek map showing Cappadocia on it. If you point to where he was born on a map it is in Turkey.

My father was born in the UK but after partition, I don't think anyone would deny he was born in Ireland.

So you think he called himself Turkish at the time? A country that didn't exist yet. We're talking about the nationality then, not the name of the patch of earth now.

miraxxx · 18/08/2025 14:40

Let me use my black skin privilege to say that the English flag and union jack are great and the OP is the kind of person who creates division.

randomchap · 18/08/2025 14:35

That's not what I'm saying at all.

That’s exactly what you said
if you can't see how the flags are being misused to stir up racial and religious intolerance then you are being naive

I live opposite a business in a seaside town that produces postcards and souvenirs, think royal family mugs, novelty tea towels. It usually has a Union Jack flying from the doorway but it changed to the St George’s cross a couple of weeks back, I don’t know why but it hasn’t crossed my mind that it’s due to racism, is this sort of thing seen as racist?

Only by racists

Fandango52 · 18/08/2025 14:41

Just to confirm that’s not actually the case. The flag represents the unification of England with Scotland and Ireland under one monarch, and Wales and England were already considered to be ‘unified’, so Wales isn’t actually represented on there on its own.

FFS!🙄 Glad to see common sense prevailing, and an overwhelming amount of posters think YABU. Racist, flying your OWN country's flag. All the LOLz!

Get a grip FFS @PicaK You wouldn't say that about ANY ofher country, except England. People who are 'not British' are not remotely offended by the English flag. None that I know anyway. It's pretty much just (usually white,) English people (social justice warriors) who crow about how 'racist' it is. Do you even know what you mean by 'Not British?' You don't do you?

HolidayInCambodia25 · 18/08/2025 14:41

Can you imagine the uproar if someone came on here and posted 'please don't post if you're black'?

An increasing proportion of people in this country are thoroughly fed up and done with 'progressive' anything.

gannett · 18/08/2025 14:42

Soontobe60 · 18/08/2025 14:39

Would a similar situation be where the word “queer” was once a homophobic insult whereas now it’s seen as a positive descriptor used with pride by those who identify as “queer”?

No, because the queer community themselves reclaimed the word - not straight people.

If non-white British communities reclaimed the St George's Cross that'd be the equivalent. Oddly enough I don't foresee this happening.

Oh god yes. We also often say this. The not so smart "gooddoing" is often just making it worse.

This article is good ”24% of people consider it racist”

the article explains the issues

https://theweek.com/94358/why-is-the-st-george-s-flag-controversial-and-is-it-legal-to-fly-it

Edited

Load of biased nonsense. based on a poll of just 2000 people.

And just because 24% of the 2000 people 'consider the England flag racist' that doesn't mean it is FGS. 🙄

Agreed (with Skippy67)

I took the OP to only be that they wanted non-whites to express how they felt. I don't see a problem with that (as a white childless male posting on Mumsnet!)

The op only wanted the opinions of non white people.
Imagine if that was reversed on a post?
Its not acceptable and racist either way.

MidnightPatrol · 18/08/2025 13:34

How is putting up a St George flag ‘implicit racism’?

It’s really bizarre that the country’s flag, or flying it, is seen as being a racist act tbh.

Why can’t English people do that? Put up their own flag?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 18/08/2025 14:45

Arlanymor · 18/08/2025 14:31

I guess you're joking! But in case anyone thinks you are not... no it doesn't! To represent Wales it would need a yellow/gold cross or black somewhere in the background.

No, not joking. I genuinely thought the red represented Wales. The blue was us (Scotland) white (England) upon googling i am gobsmacked, i didnt think NI was on it.
i do humbly apologise if ive caused offence by my ignorance 💐

MrsVino · 18/08/2025 14:45

Sorry - replied to wrong post

SerendipityJane · 18/08/2025 14:46

They've also managed to hang most of the Union Jack ones upside down. Which seems a bit insulting to me. By all means tell me what country I live in. But - for the love of God - get it right.

Exactly! The irony is spectacular, from someone who is accusing others of racism! 🙄
