To ask those who are not white brittish how they feel about the flags?

Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

The flag of St George is the official flag of England. Whether it's been 'hijacked' is neither here nor there. It will be housed over royal and parliamentary buildings. Interesting how many tourists come to see those buildings - I guess a piece of cloth is insignificant, compared to England's tourist attractions.

Of course it’s an issue that it has been used by racists

that’s excatly why we are having this conversation

and it’s the Union Jack that is flown above HOP and Buckingham Palace (or the royal standard) because they are representative of the UK not just England

You mean like gammon and white supremists. I don't recall you saying anything on those posts.

So now you're just trying to distract with whataboutary. Again, obtuse and disingenuous

We can't say that though can we? The OP deliberately used the term taking our country back to get the result she wanted.

If British born people don't like the flag being erected , what are we 'free' to do, out of interest?

Is it only non British born that need to 'leave'?

Gammon is an insult. I didn't think you'd have an answer - hence the usual whataboutery comeback.

Well, people who are British by birth, are British, and should be proud to see their countries flag.

However, if they would prefer to leave for a different country because they are offended by their own countries flag, then they to, can piss off.

Maybe write to parliament and the Royal houses, and express your objection.

If people are regularly pointing out your use of whataboutery then maybe you should stop doing it and engage with people in a meaningful and honest manner.

faffadoodledo · 19/08/2025 10:06

I do think focussing on the flag as a symbol of my country is very reductive. There are so many things that make me proud of being British, English (and Cornish in fact). It’s music, both popular and classical, it’s literature, its sporting achievements and scientific endeavour. It’s so much! Flags flown at specific events as they are in my town - St George’s day, St Pirans Day, sporting and royal events - are spot on. Hanging them from every lamppost in a district is reductive at best and at worst represents a hijacking by a certain section of society (which doesn’t represent my patriotic views). its naive to suppose otherwise.

Still haven't got justification for ignoring some insults and not others?

Oh come on, we aren't talking about parliament and royal estates.

There was me thinking in a democracy we were free not to be patriotic/unquestioningly loyal/ jingoistic/ whatever we choose not to be within the law.

I didn't ignore your insult as it was directed at me.

If others want to insult me, I may or may not respond. It's a free country

You're still focusing on whataboutery though. Yawn

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2025 10:12

I'm just clarifying who needs to leave 'this country'.

Anyone not in favour of a flag being strung on a lamppost under cover of night , regardless of country of birth?

Yes, we are a democracy! Well done for thinking that.

So, if people want to fly their countries flags, they are free too. As you said, we are a democracy.

No, thought not. So it's back to the double standards.

Piggywaspushed · 19/08/2025 10:13

Yes they are free to. And I am free to question it. No need for me to piss off.

You talked about flags, on display. Maybe be more specific?

Sorry, which part of my explanation didn't you understand? I can try to simplify the language if you would find that easier

What's wrong with the flag, I think your post is ridiculous

No, I very specifically, as have others , said this was about the lampposts. It's you that keeps being specific.

You haven't explained your hypocrisy - I'm still waiting. Why do you think it's acceptable to call somebody gammon but not weak?

You referred to the flag "being erected" These goal posts are working overtime on their shifting.
