Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

The issue in question here isn't about people displaying the flag on their own property. It's about unauthorised groups of people attaching the flags on every lamppost post in whole areas of Birmingham and Tower Hamlets

HRTQueen · 19/08/2025 08:57

My family (not me directly) but my dad aunts etc will associate them with racism and with good reason

its no secret that pubs in Croydon and Eltham that fly the flag proudly have a clientele that are proud to be racist

i would avoid anyone who flys this flag outside their home me because of the connection

Imagine if someone wrote a thread saying ‘no Asian or blacks to comment please’
Im sorry but people like you are making it racist!!!

This has been the case with Palestinian Flags in both Tower Hamlets and Birmingham since October 7.

I'm white Irish and St George's flags creep me out. A few homes near me fly them and I go out of my way to avoid. I wouldn't have the same reaction to the Union Jack but generally find flag flying a bit basic tbh.

So you're xenophobic- thanks for letting us know.

It's quite clear what she's talking about. It's called double standards.

Are you talking about the St George or Palestinian flag?

ACynicalDad · 19/08/2025 09:16

I'm way more concerned by the Palestinian and Pakistani ones than the English flag in England. We should reclaim it so it's not a far right thing, the amount of English who hate their country is so odd.

Maybe you should look at the history between Ireland and the UK before judging them as a xenophobe. Cromwell, the famine, etc.

Perhaps the fact OP is so shocked by implicit racism then says she doesn't want to hear from white people?

Dangermoo · 19/08/2025 09:22

@randomchap well aware. That doesn't alter the wording of some posters, who find it easy to slag off the English. It's seen on this forum a lot. So yes, there's a word for it, when a nation of people are treated as a homogenous group. Two examples being gammon and white supremacy. As I said, double standards apply.

The flag is associated with racism because so many racists love to fly the flag

the question is how this is perceived by those who have to deal with racism directed at them and this is very often by people who fly the flag

should this conversation be shut down

You mean patriots - how dare they fly their flag, in this country.

ShorehamGirl · 19/08/2025 09:27

Both

It's just appeasement. So from this thread, it's racist to fly the flag at:

Trooping of the colour
England football matches
Hoisted on poles, on one's own private property
Armistice day
VE day
VJ day
St George's day

ShorehamGirl · 19/08/2025 09:30

The flag has been hijacked, is a recurring theme. Has it been hijacked in Tower Hamlets - by whom?

randomchap · 19/08/2025 09:35

Dangermoo · 19/08/2025 09:33

No. I meant you. You're being deliberately obtuse and disingenuous.

Cloudymonday · 19/08/2025 09:35

I think people have been mixing patriotism and nationalism on this thread by the way.
