Birmingham and Tower Hamlets are having St George England flags put up by privately funded groups.
I'm horrified by the implicit racism. I've seen a lot of white people applauding this and "time we took back the country" comments.
I haven't seen many non white people commenting. My feel is that they are too intimidated to do so. Am I right? Or is it indifference or is it that you're dealing with racism on a daily level and this is just one more thing.
Please don't post if you're white.whatever you feel about the flags. I want to hear on white viewd

Why cannot people put up the flags? How can it possibly be racist? What utter utter nonsense. Do you have the same sentiment re the flags and stripes which is flown everywhere? or is it just the British people who cannot be proud of their country. Sick of this. Fly them everywhere.

MidnightMusing5 · 18/08/2025 16:04

I’m not white British and they don’t bother me . Im sick of white people telling me I’m offended when I’m not.

i can guarantee no person of colour ordered to have the flags taken down.

Media and powers that be causing division again.

Divide and conquer.

Cloudymonday · 18/08/2025 16:05

I might put mast in my garden to help reclaim the flag 😁

Deargodletitgo · 18/08/2025 16:06

I'm white, but not British and I'm always surprised by the way the English flag is seen as a symbol of racism. My national flag has never been seen in that way when displayed in my home country.

Umpumapa · 18/08/2025 16:06

Good on them👏🏻 about time we started being proud. Piss off if you don’t agree

eyeses · 18/08/2025 16:07

GypsyQueeen · 18/08/2025 13:39

It's British by the way.

I think the flags being talked about are the red + on a white back ground English flags not the union flags.
I mainly associate them with footall.

I'm a white British person born in England, and if the St George flag is flown and there isn't a sporting event on, I assume that it's a statement of nationalist racism. For me, the flag has been completely hijacked by the far right and in all honesty, I'm ashamed of it now.

My sense of national pride comes from many, many other places. I am proud of my country. But its flag is a symbol of division, to me.

Edited

I feel the same.

deeply patriotic.. last night of the Proms, Nimrod playing on Armistice Day, England or Team GB winning anything, words written by Hardy or Shakespeare - all those things can bring me to tears of joy or nostalgia.
But flags flown en masse from lamp posts? Nope.

Let’s not make this racist! Anywhere they wish

ChocolatesAndRainbows · 18/08/2025 16:12

How is it racist to have our national flags on display?

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2025 16:12

I see. You know people are allowed to disagree, right?

Norwegian, Danish and US flags are nothing like nazi flags. The far right are strongly associated with the British and English flags. Maybe there needs to be a campaign to reclaim the flags.

It's probably quite likely that some of the Norwegian, Danish and US people who fly flags are 'far right' or even actually right wing and some might be racists.

No one seems to suggest that because some people fly the flag for rightist or racist reasons, no one else should either.

Underthinker · 18/08/2025 16:19

This is bonkers.
In my opinion flying flags is pretty dumb and pointless, but calling people who fly flags racist is dumber and more pointless.

Dannydevitoiloveyourart · 18/08/2025 16:20

Connotations between the English flag and racism are entirely the fault of a subset of English (men) who have used it as a symbol for proud xenophobia, racism and aggressive behaviour - particularly at football matches and anti-immigration rallies.

The English flag has historically been used (and therefore perceived) in a way that the Welsh, Scottish, and British flag are rarely used. As a non-white person who grew up in the British isles (but not England), I think the Welsh and Scottish use their flags out of pride rather than hatred. And that pride comes from a history of being oppressed and having their identity and culture diminished by the English, rather than from a history of oppressing others and imposing that culture, language and identity on others.

So whilst I do not think there is anything wrong with the English flag - when its placement is used in a pointed way, reminiscent of the more unsavoury history and use of the flag - it's unsurprising some may see it as an act of aggression and racism, and as a continuation of a long history of oppression and xenophobia by the English towards other groups. It's not wrong to point that out.

But I also do sympathise with non-racist English people who want to be able to display their flag proudly without it having those connotations.

OP, are you non-white or just curious?

Piggywaspushed · 18/08/2025 16:23

Anyone who has grown up in a sectarian community will understand exactly what is going on here.

Scots were colonisers. Conveniently forgotten.

I assume somewhere where they're not offended by a flag.....

Tootingbeclido69 · 18/08/2025 16:28

I choose to come to England. It has given me a good life....I love the flag of my adopted home. Fly it more. Reclaim it.

CurlewKate · 18/08/2025 16:30

There is a very interesting Mumsnet phenomenon that non white and people in relationships with non white people always emerge to defend things which are perceived as racist. It used to be a feature of gollywog threads. Non white people who were ardent collectors. I do hope that doesn’t start happening on St George’s Cross threads.

Oh my goodness, that must be awful.

How are you coping with it? I can't imagine how I would feel in your shoes.

Sending virtual hugs.
