Foodbank - 3 cars

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 00:11

Am I being unreasonable to think a family with 2 cars and a big fancy house shouldn't be using foodbanks regularly? No disability issues.

Your friends know the shop keepers that go to the food bank? Are your friends using the food bank? Or how would they know?

I assumed by ‘friends’ OP meant people who work at other foodbanks who are clearly her flying monkeys.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure everyone in these stories only live in OPs head...

I may apply. I'd decline a lot as know a lot of people who take the mick.

Ah, so we can add ableist to the list then can we ? The fact that you don’t realise it’s a controlled system and the assessor doesn’t actually make the decision as to who gets declined and who doesn’t proves you know as much about disability/benefits as you do about the lives of people who are struggling enough to need a food bank.

Why add ableist?

I understand a lot more and it was a sarcastic comment, I just didn't realise we were in court. The point was though, if I was in control of the PIP payments, I'd be declining a lot as I know a lot of those in receipt take the biscuit.

But you’re not in control of PIP payments (thankfully) and the point is that even as a PIP assessor you wouldn’t be, because they have no say in whether benefit is awarded or not. They are there purely to assess the claimants medically and provide reports to DWP.

And I’ll tell you why you’re ableist. You’ve stated twice that you know a lot of people in receipt of PIP are taking the mick. How ?

Unless you live with someone 24/7 so you know every detail of how their disability affects their daily life and mobility, are qualified to interpret their medical information, and are privy to the information contained in their PIP claim, as well as present at any medical interview you are absolutely not qualified to judge whether they are genuine or not. Unless of course you’re applying the same guidelines as you do for recognising food bank users taking the mick - just what you can see on the surface.

I said way upthread that this thread was reminiscent of the mindset of OP’s posting benefit bashing threads. And I think you just proved me right.

You know an awful lot of people

who

take the mick
take the biscuit (and not just from food banks)

It’s what comes of the lack of emotional maturity to look further than what’s on the surface.

You have one verifiable source for your 3-cars-foodbank position It’s been proven that you didn’t understand who was saying what on the Sky news piece and admitted that you weren't listening properly anyway.

Now you’re leaning into to your shopkeeper story (being careful to avoid the sprinkle of racism you dusted that with when you first brought it up). I don’t believe your story, you are an unreliable witness.

I don't believe it either.

Needmorelego · 18/08/2025 12:28

Don't most food banks only give food that's meant to cover 3 days and will be for a variety of meals so you would get ONE jar of pasta sauce, ONE bag of pasta, ONE tin of beans, ONE can of soup......etc.
That would have to be the most bizarre and time consuming way to stock a shop.
😂😂😂

Exactly this.

KoiTetra · 18/08/2025 15:59

Anyone can fall on hard times. They likely had a high income and have lost a job or similar.

I was in a similar position myself recently, self-employed earning a good wage for years, nice house etc and then all of a sudden business dried up. Luckily I was able to find a new job before we reached that point but another 2 months and the house would have been on the market and we may well have needed to use a foodbank either until the house sold or I found a new job.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/08/2025 15:39

Exactly this.

The one I used to go to gave lots of big bag fulls and worth quite a bit of money. For the shop, on one occasion there were three family members. Pet food also, not to be sniffed at.

And sometimes a spade is a spade. I know some genuine people who struggle and have used a foodbank on occasion, but for every genuine one, there are about 10 who take the mick.

Well that's unusual for a food bank.
I seriously doubt it was actually a food bank despite what you say.
What charity was running it?
If it was one of the big names (Trussel Trust??) perhaps contact the main person in charge at the HQ to question their practice.
Or admit it.....you are actually talking bollocks.

Needmorelego · 18/08/2025 16:20

@TalkToTheHand123 also maybe contact Trading Standards to report the shop for obtaining goods from an unofficial supplier.
But I expect you won't do that.....

Circumstances are complex! Eg I know of a struggling family because the dad lost the really well paid job, the grandfather has dementia and gambled using his sons debit card he stole, and the mum is a teaching assistant to children with disabilities (not well paid but worthy and was great when her husband earned well!) they have used the food bank once and use the zero waste shop frequently anyone can use. They are putting the house on the market but can’t sell cars because here no car = no job prospects

SumUp · 18/08/2025 16:41

This is all bollocks.

Multiple posters have correctly pointed out that you cannot know the circumstances of people who are getting help. Of course shop owners can use a food bank if they need to. For some people, debt advice and help with applying for benefits is more useful than the food.

Definately a foodbank and yes TT. I was processing the vouchers / codes myself and would go myself as I was too soft to say no. Eventually though after about 4 or 5 trips, I started to say no as it was draining, using up a lot of petrol and the customers were taking the mick. They would turn their nose up at most of the food then go out get drunk and go for a Mcdonalds on the way home.

At the time I was a support worker working with 10-15 people in one service alone and knew their whole life story. Some would get them and take to friends or sell the food for drugs.

I am retired on little more than state pension and live in a small flat. I have close friends who have a large house, nice cars and a young family.
I am more financially stable then they are. The big house is a money pit, freelance work is unreliable and child care is very expensive. I know the one partner has health issues which are getting worse,so can no longer do the jobs such as decorating and gardening which she used to do so has to pay for help. Her parner works away a lot. It is all quite precarious. They want to finish the house and downsize. They bought it when they had 2 good incomes. But downsizing does not fill the food cupboard today. So they look rich but they are not.you never can tell. I donate to my local food bank. I am glad if it helps someone. I dont mind who.

MurdoMunro · 18/08/2025 16:49

‘Some’ or 13.5 of them? Just using your stats here @TalkToTheHand123, you said for every one that was genuine need 10 were ‘taking the mick’

It gets better. At a youth place. A colleague went for someone who was out at mcdonalds at the time, returned took a few items, said staff can chuck the rest and didn't even thank the staff member for going.
