Foodbank - 3 cars

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 00:11

Am I being unreasonable to think a family with 2 cars and a big fancy house shouldn't be using foodbanks regularly? No disability issues.

I listened enough to have a good grasp at the situation. There was no mention of making a contribution. It was constant 'poor me'. Wearing fancy clothes and fancy handbag and shoes. They were playing the poverty card when they blatanty weren't. Some things are obvious and don't need a public enquiry.

You telling me that there aren't many that go to foodbanks who couldn't sacrifice a few luxurys for food?

Fancy houses
Fancy cars
Fancy clothes
Fancy handbag
Fancy shoes

You forgot fancy holidays.

But no fancy food? Everything else “fancy” but happy to eat whatever is available at the food bank? Odd that?

I think you’re talking rubbish! I don’t think you’ve got any great knowledge and I think this is just a goady thread of how you perceive food banks.

And you consistent use of the term “taking the mick” is really fucking irritating. It’s like you’ve been set a mission to get it into 15 sentences during the course of the day.

numbfromlife · 18/08/2025 01:54

Exactly! Maybe business is slow and they need some help for their own food. They can't just go and take things off their own shelves, or that's a bit loss with no prospect of profit.

It's not like a food parcel is going to give much when you're stocking a shop.

Firm agree.
And we’ll skim past how disproportionally impacted small shops are by the resent exponential rises in shoplifting. Those same shopkeepers who don’t have the resources to tackle the problem with the same vigour as the big supermarkets.

I work in the support sector so have visited foodbanks with clients who take the mick. I've also noticed a few local shopkeepers and their families there.

Why do you think they are taking the mick?

This. I just don't believe the OP at all. She completely lost me at 'stocking up shops'.

I think you are right.

So you’re making a massive judgment based on very limited knowledge of the situation, and coming onto Mumsnet to wind yourself up even more/ rabble rouse FFS. Have a day off. Or at least waste your own time calling into GB news or something.

There is a massive difference between a food bank and a community fridge. In our town everyone is positively encouraged to use the community fridge irrespective of wealth. Whereas for a food bank you need a referral from an accredited professional if you’re unlucky from someone like you.

And you say that these people bought the house, which is hardly trump towers, some time ago with a mortgage. They could be up to their ears in mortgage debt and on the verge of being made homeless and, even on your own argument, I very much doubt they would have predicted being in difficulty now when they bought it. Can you not imagine buying a house and then 5/10 years later being ill, having been scammed, losing your job? Do you want people to have to starve to death whilst selling their houses in this situation (it can take years, even if you do have some equity).

As for the cars- probably worth very little, could be on HP and also take time to sell.

Would be lovely if you could engage your brain OP from time to time.

The shopkeepers and their family are well known. Friends know them also and they say the same. I've seen some of the stuff they took and then in their shop later that day (could be the same type but very suspicious and coincidental).

If they are up to their eyes in debt, this is a long term situation so they had time to sell and downsize.

And yes it definately is a foodbank. Jeez. I wouldn't have been so wound up if it was a community fridge. I was just a bit fed up of dealing with people who are taking the buscuit with foodbanks and the local news segment where they interviewed this woman sent me off.

Jesus Christ. Stop doubling down on this daft lie. You're making yourself look ridiculous.

layingwoody · 18/08/2025 11:09

Yabu. What if they work for themself and haven’t had a good month and can just about cover a few bills and have nothing left for food that month? Their car could be gifted from an older well off family member, and it’s their only means of transport which they rely on? There’s plenty of reasons why someone’s circumstances could change. I doubt they’d be using a food bank if they didn’t need to, surely if they were that well off they’d be choosing the meals they want to eat each night? You never know anyone’s personal circumstances and certainly shouldn’t judge. Some people do use them temporarily as they’ve had a change of financial circumstances and shouldn’t have to sell their car and home first.

If they are up.to their eyeballs in debt selling a couple of bags of random food items from a food bank isn't going to help them .

From looking at other threads OP says she works for a charity. God forbid that it’s a foodbank but I think it’s likely. Wonder how they’d feel if they knew she was posting online criticising those who use them and speculating as to whether they were CF’s or not.

Good grief.

MurdoMunro · 18/08/2025 11:33

You have one verifiable source for your 3-cars-foodbank position It’s been proven that you didn’t understand who was saying what on the Sky news piece and admitted that you weren't listening properly anyway.

Now you’re leaning into to your shopkeeper story (being careful to avoid the sprinkle of racism you dusted that with when you first brought it up). I don’t believe your story, you are an unreliable witness.

Rosscameasdoody · 18/08/2025 11:41

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 18:24

Because I've came across enough mick takers. If it was just a few then I wouldn't be so opposed, but I come across so many now it's beyond a joke.

Well seemingly it doesn’t take much for you to deem people as mick takers does it ? You don’t seem to look further than what’s on the surface, or to realise that people’s circumstances can change at any time, regardless of the ‘stuff’ they have amassed. Maybe if you stopped being so judgmental of people at face value, and made an attempt to look a bit deeper you’d find there aren’t as many mick takers as you think.

So these don’t have fancy houses, cars, handbags, holidays and whatever, these have lots of debt?

So, they go to the food bank and get a few items, unless you are going to say they go with a wheel barrow and take loads of stuff whilst all the helpers (yourself included) let them….. which is doubtful!

So, they take these items to their shop, and are able to sell the exact items they taken from the food bank and make 100 mark up?

few questions:-

what’s the average cost of a food bank item (non perishable), that they could sell? I’d hazard no more than maybe £3? Maybe £5. Their debt must be small if that’s repaying it.

What area does your food bank cover, it’s interesting that the people that have the shop, just so happen to be recognised by you and you shop on that shop and recognise the items. I mean of all the small shops around, you know the shop, the items and the shop keepers.

OP, stop digging! You’re story isn’t stacking up!

Your friends know the shop keepers that go to the food bank? Are your friends using the food bank? Or how would they know?

Needmorelego · 18/08/2025 12:28

Don't most food banks only give food that's meant to cover 3 days and will be for a variety of meals so you would get ONE jar of pasta sauce, ONE bag of pasta, ONE tin of beans, ONE can of soup......etc.
That would have to be the most bizarre and time consuming way to stock a shop.
😂😂😂

Exactly 😂

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/08/2025 12:57

How obscure are the items that they can be identifiable on the shelf as being things that came from the foodbank?

Is the foodbank giving out Musang King durian omelet crisp and Thailand Unique tinned bacon & cheese flavour grasshoppers, and the OP then seeing them on the shelf of a shop that normally sells nothing more adventurous than a chicken Pot Noodle? Or does the shop happen to stock widely available products like Spar baked beans and East End tinned chickpeas that are exactly the type of cheap, easy to prepare protein that food banks are inundated with. That may indeed have been bought from that shop to donate to the foodbank?

Or is it all just desperate hole digging after the original story was debunked?

Wouldn't it just and who would shop there ?Never knowing if you would be able to pick up the pasta you need for your tea or make do with a box of tea bags 🤔

You do know foodbanks don't have specially labelled "Poor Person" food?

And a shop sells the same food the food banks will give?
