Foodbank - 3 cars

TalkToTheHand123 · 17/08/2025 00:11

Am I being unreasonable to think a family with 2 cars and a big fancy house shouldn't be using foodbanks regularly? No disability issues.

I don’t understand why anyone cares about this. It’s not your tax money funding it, it’s zero of your business

Didn't fully listen but making judgement

Of course

I listened enough to have a good grasp at the situation. There was no mention of making a contribution. It was constant 'poor me'. Wearing fancy clothes and fancy handbag and shoes. They were playing the poverty card when they blatanty weren't. Some things are obvious and don't need a public enquiry.

You telling me that there aren't many that go to foodbanks who couldn't sacrifice a few luxurys for food?

I think you're a judgemental bitch who listened to a little bit of a news report and made decisions based of half a story....

For my point it doesn't make a difference. The point is there are a lot of people taking the absolute mick whether you are using a voucher or not which has put me off donating. I wasn't fully watching, but I believe the news reporter stated they were using a foodbank.

I now don't give to beggars as I know a few who use the money for drugs.

Edited

Of course it makes a difference.

The food pantries/community fridges etc have a different purpose than food banks where you need a referral. Food pantries and community fridges are more about improving food waste rather than feeding people who can't afford food and it is for anyone who lives in the area so if they are using those, they are for everyone.

Why don't you give it another listen now? Make sure you got the right end of the stick the first time? What have you got to lose?

Climbingrosexx · 17/08/2025 17:24

Then there is more equity in the house to down size and I wouldn't be spending money on running 3 cars unless they were work vehicles

And what if they rent and don’t own the house? It’s easy for people to say what others should or shouldn’t do when they don’t know all the facts

WimbyAce · 17/08/2025 18:22

I honestly couldn't get worked up about it. If someone feels they need to use a food bank then I have no problem with that. Everyone has different circumstances and without analysing every single person's finances you have no idea who is most in need.

Because I've came across enough mick takers. If it was just a few then I wouldn't be so opposed, but I come across so many now it's beyond a joke.

Quite a lot of people do their own hair and nails. I don't get this current thing of banging about these things.

Not a current trend for me - as I said, I volunteered so I am not talking about people who did it themselves. Know how I know? Because they told me all about it. The worst offender was also the person who would to take her dog to the vet because 'it was too expensive'.

I stand by my point - this post is mostly unreasonable, but there are a number of CFs who will spend on beauty treatments, going to the pub, going on holiday, but then line up for free food. And that is wrong. Fortunately where I volunteered was pretty good at picking this up, but I have seen some abuse.

I agree I don't know the facts, which is why I said that's what I would do I didn't actually say they should do xyz

If there's so many surely you've got some actual example? (Made up shopkeepers don't count)

oviraptor21 · 17/08/2025 10:23

This is not true in my area. Some people are on six months referrals and we have no idea of the value of their house. To be fair most are in rented properties but there are many who are not.

If you're out of work for a few months it's not worth the expense of moving

The community fridge is not the food bank. The food bank only poor people can use, the fridge anyone can use.
Not sure why you give a shit tbh I know a family in a million pound house using the community fridge as well as my alcoholic father (who tells me stories of the drug addicts antics from waiting in the queue to use it)

Seriously it doesn't matter if "rich people" or "people who make poor life choices" use it, anyone can and the food would just go in the trash if they didnt.

Have you not got bigger fish to fry?

It's hadly a bedsit though. I do a lot of community work. This is how I know how many take the mick. I know a few shop keepers who go there to stock up their shops also.

You can't go to a foodbank to stock up a shop. At the one where I volunteer you get 3 days emergency food giving 3 basic meals a day - a box of cereal, longlife milk, tinned soup, vegetables and meat/fish, pasta/instant mash, rice pudding or custard maybe a sponge pudding. That could be Heinz or Tesco Value depending on what has been donated. You can't stock a shop with random things like that.

I never see anyone like that.

Ooooh so sorry my information wasn't fully perfect. I didn't realise I was being MN evidence assessed and audited.

I"ve referred plenty people who just go to take the mick just to make my job easier.

I didn't realise there was a community food bank. I may start going if I have a local one, so I can go to the pub more or meals out, rather than spending money on food.

I mentioned disabilities as I'd be ok with those that need a car with disabilities. The family in question were on tv being interviewed so for me it's ok to be a bit nosey about their personal situation.

I understand life can take a turn and have sympathy and understanding for those in these situations, my point was more about those who go on fancy holidays and could pay if they wanted to and use foodbanks so they don't have to pay for food. The family being interviewed appeared to be using foodbanks over a long time while going on fancy holidays.

It’s not a question of getting your information “fully perfect”.

But if you’re going to sit in judgement of people (and invite others to do likewise), then not being able to accurately the state the number of cars they supposedly have in your opening post is quite a glaring error.

And then being a dick about it when this is pointed out, probably isn’t terribly helpful either.

I agree it really isn’t. It costs money, it’s upheaval and you still have to live somewhere. If it’s short term I don’t see the issue in using a food bank to get you through a difficult time - isn’t that what they’re for ?

Although being vague about the number of cars is a smaller error than missing the fact that these particular people aren't using a foodbank.

Maybe they are really good at charity shopping? You can get some amazing items there.

Having referred people to foodbanks and knowing their situations intimately, it is not easy at all to abuse the system and it's not a free for all. People using food banks are genuinely in need.

In our area there are no questions asked on the first parcel. The second you are referred for financial counselling, which means showing bank documents and quite a detailed assessment of incoming and outgoing funds. You can't get more than three parcels. All the foodbanks in the area are linked, so there's no foodbank hopping.

JLou08 · 17/08/2025 22:43

I couldn't get to work without my car. Obviously I need my house and if I had no spare money moving wouldn't really be an option. So do I sell the car and give up work? Do I stop paying the mortgage and wait to be repossessed. Or do I go to the food bank?

Charltonstrek · 18/08/2025 00:07

Maybe they've taken on more than they can chew and now fell on hard times I'm sure it must happen

I work in the support sector so have visited foodbanks with clients who take the mick. I've also noticed a few local shopkeepers and their families there.

Er.... shopkeepers are people too. Doesn't mean they're automatically stocking up their shops 🙄😂

Exactly! Maybe business is slow and they need some help for their own food. They can't just go and take things off their own shelves, or that's a bit loss with no prospect of profit.

It's not like a food parcel is going to give much when you're stocking a shop.
