What do you think of when you hear LGBTQ+?

purpledaze24 · 16/08/2025 11:43

It seems these days, when people see/hear LGBTQ+ they think of trans people & the trans debate. Is this accurate do you think? Or AIBU? I read on here recently about someone rejecting a rainbow badge given to her to wear at work to celebrate pride month (presumably not cos she was homophobic but rather, anti-trans). As a lesbian, this makes me really sad. I’ve always been proud to be a ‘rainbow family’ and want my kids to be proud too, but this association, and takeover imo, of the rainbow symbol & LGBTQ+ acronym by the gender ideology brigade, is creating, at best erasure of LGB people, and at worst, (maybe unintentional) homophobia and discrimination. I respect & understand that trans people have played an important role in the LGBT struggle historically, but it’s this ridiculous escalation of it & all these ‘trans trenders’ and being able to identify as one of 72 different genders etc 🙄

LGB and QT+ should have remained separate. The joining of the groups makes me roll my eyes and brace for drama because of the pronoun brigade which I know is unfair on the LGB people who are very different.

Pretty much this!

I also don’t really understand the Q, I always thought ‘queer’ was just another (potentially derogatory) way of describing anyone that isn’t straight which is already covered by LGB?

Justwrong68 · 16/08/2025 20:23

I hated it when I first saw it, a friend pointed out that it was to identify pubs and clubs as friendly to foreign travellers, so that makes sense but most flag waving makes me queasy.

Me too! Rightly or wrongly, I've come to understand "Q" as the attention-seeking "Oh look at me, I'm so different" version of LGB.

People could and do say that about the LGB bit as well, though. Why do you (or others) think it's ok if it's said about the letters that you don't "agree with" but not the ones you do?

The letters LGB are clearly associated with sexual orientation.

TQ+ are clearly not. T refers to people with the protected characteristic of gender reassignment and I have absolutely no idea at all what Q actually refers to in practice.

Lesbians and Gays
do not demand that the rest of the world revolves around their lies

trans identifying men, spicy straight queers and whatever the "+" are
do

Good question! I suppose because LGB refer to inherent characteristics, whereas T and Q (based on my own limited observations, which might be misleading) seem to refer to social identity (often a rather performative one).

BelperLawnmower · 16/08/2025 15:53

Is there any quantifiable data on this? Just curious, and I don't have any real insight into this community.

Probably no actual data, but local groups that started as LGB now have no young lesbians, but a shit ton of trans men.

Alternatively you could say they all have faced battles because they don't conform to some of the social norms expected of their sex. Just about every political organisation is a collection of people who in some respects have conflicting interests - it doesn't mean they can't ally behind a common cause.

MumOfManyAliases · 16/08/2025 20:44

Catpiece · 16/08/2025 11:54

I think it’s the being “forced” to celebrate the sexual preferences of others ie wearing a rainbow badge when we don’t want to. I don’t want any group to be picked on or bullied but I’m not prepared to go far as to “celebrate” or “support”.

I agree, it sometimes feels a little forced. I truly believe in accepting and respecting people for who they are, but I find it hard to understand why every variation needs a specific label, or why people’s private preferences always need to be celebrated so publicly.

Trans ideology is homophobic though.

But what is that common cause?

Self identified Ts don’t always have the gender reassignment characteristic though. Some are ‘fluid’ and have different pronouns every day of the week, others are just dabbling or jumping on a social contagion bandwagon. I long for the good old days with the old fashioned type of transsexuals who got on with their lives and didn’t agitate to burn terfs in a grease fire.

Sorry to bang on again : but I've had a response about my deleted post (s) :

Apparently 'Hurtyfeelz' was dismissive and 'not In the spirit of Mumsnet ' (how on earth can they say that when it was a tongue in cheek response supporting the posters point ?)

Secondly I was worried after the "you know what you said" underneath an unreadable deleted post that people may think I'd used something abhorrent like the 'N' word. Apparently that post was racist 😲.

I'm shocked about the moderator on today. Obviously making things a bit personal. I can see why everyone ends up on Reddit nowadays. Mumsnet is becoming a hypocritical echo chamber.

The moderation is inconsistent. Someone called a friend of mine a horrible name on here a couple of years ago, something that I’ve seen deleted quickly before and since. The mods left it up for 2 days telling her to ‘challenge it on the thread’. They eventually deleted it as they had ‘had a chat and decided it wasn’t in the spirit’. 🙄 I wouldn’t worry about it.

Thanks for the support. I think I ended up more annoyed after the 'racist' accusation- when all I said was "I'm worried people with think of used the N word or something" I really can't understand how that's "racist".

But as you say, inconsistent moderation I guess, like the example you've given.

I moved to Reddit after Mumsnet introduced the compulsory cookie thing. I'm only back here temporarily because I was interested in opinions on mounjaro price rises!

Ah that's interesting - thanks for your response. I might have a look at signing up 😊

It does look a bit more chaotic, but I guess that's down to me being unfamiliar with it for now. I'm quite incensed about the 'racist' accusation to be honest. It's a really low blow from whoever that moderator is. I don't feel like that's at all warranted or rational. I nearly started a post on it but I'm sure they'd pick apart anything id said to make an excuse to delete it.

By the way I read your name as "Dildo"do the right thing 🤭 (I better shut my mouth in case thats racist 🙄)

MaraB77 · 16/08/2025 22:13

I think it lost the plot when things like demi-sexual became part of the rainbow, and also the furries nonsense. I've been on Pride marches in the past but now I wouldn't go.

HatFamster · 16/08/2025 22:14

I can’t get to grips with reddit - the misogyny is appalling.

Talkinpeace · 16/08/2025 22:18

How does running away to an echo chamber like trans/reddit
get around the reality
that TQ* has destroyed the relaxed acceptance of LGB ?

SquishedMallow · 16/08/2025 22:21

HatFamster · 16/08/2025 22:14

Well, to me it's on par with Mumsnet moderator calling my post "racist" because I said "I'm frightened people will think I've used the N word or something"

And deleting my initial (supportive to who I was replying to ) "hurtyfeelz" comment and any subsequent post with reference to it. Yet other far far far more "offensive" posts are up.

It seems to me like they're just deleting my posts and using it as an excuse to say "you've had too many deletions so we're banning you " it seems MNHQ like a softly softly echo chamber.

At least on Reddit you can call the misogynists a few expletives without getting deleted 😁

coldinsummer · 16/08/2025 22:28

I roll my eyes.

It’s far too convoluted these days. I support LGB and then lose interest. The T has taken over.
