To think that the USA is a dictatorship now?

Trump appears to have ultimate power. Who can challenge him? Who controls him? Presidents should not be dictating what drug companies charge for medicines on a whim, or indeed any other goods, at the drop of a hat. He says jump and the US says "How High?" What on earth have you done to yourselves and the world to let this evil, thick, orange toddler clown represent you? What the hell were you thinking?

Thank you. I understand the US system but hadn't realised the executive branch could ride roughshod over all. I thought that Congress/Supreme Court had more power than they seem to, right now.

That's the issue yes. I've never understood why Biden didn't seize the chance to reestablish some balance within the SC during his own mandate. He was within his rights to appoint a couple more judges. The Dems' concern to retain the moral & political high ground ultimately did the country a great disservice because that was one more potential barrier gone. It's all a bit fail to prepare and you prepare to fail...

Our country is in a diabolical mess!! It's a shit show, a complete and utter disgrace.

But we don't have masked strangers picking people up off the streets for being a bit brown - including actual citizens.

We don't have increasing censorship in our school and library system.

We don't have women dying because they're denied abortions.

We don't have a government that decides what our national museums display.

We don't have a Health Secretary who slashes vital research funding into highly promising cancer treatments because he doesn't understand what mRNA is. And our Health Secretary doesn't undermine vaccination programmes either.

We have a two tier justice system, we have an incompetent cretin prime minister who is a compulsive liar.

We don't have a two tier justice system - there's a whole thread on this. Maybe read up about the difference between what happens if you plead guilty compared to pleading not guilty.

Your opinion of the Prime Minister is just that - an opinion. Do I think he's great? No. Do I think he's better than the last lot? Hell yes.

Lastly, if you think it's so awful here, you could always get a job in the US and move over there. I'm sure it'll be great.

I strongly suggest you look up Ricky Jones, the Manchester Airport brothers and Lucy Connelly and then come back to me and tell me there is not a 2 tier justice system in this country.

No people may not be being dragged off the street, instead we have masked people walking around stabbing instead. London is now classed as one of the most dangerous cities. Even Mexicans are being advised again travel to the UK....let that sink in!!

It absolutely is my opinion that Starner is an incompetent cretin and I stick by that!!

Why should I have to move to America when I just want equality and the country to be ran properly, how about you piss off & live somewhere else!!

At what cost? He’s cut off millions of people’s Medicaid.

Funding isn't limitless. People should take personal responsibility for their health.

OK. I hope you remember that if you develop cancer and require treatment costing tens of thousands of pounds. You’ll be able to put your money where your mouth is then.

Why do people throw around words like dictatorship and fascism these days without the slightest idea what they mean? It’s so tedious. Have they ever opened a history book?

Those of us who have read many ‘history books’ are those who clearly see the direction in which the US is heading. Although I’m not sure you’d need to have read much more than a restaurant menu to work it out at this stage.

I rather suspect @Champagneandpringles24 isn’t that interested in the facts, and probably lacks the skills to interpret them anyway ;)

Hundreds of thousands in fact.

Not to mention the fact that you end up spending your days stressing out about insurance admin, chasing up insurance payments, fighting for the better care options etc instead of focusing on your health and wellbeing! (not firsthand experience thankfully but that of close friends who ended up in dire financial straits)

Unless you are white and middle class the US is not the place to go for equality :)

Further more, I suspect you’d prefer the country to be run properly, not ran properly. What with the latter not being grammatically correct ;)

However, I completely agree that Starmer is incompetent in matters of domestic politics, preferring as he does to focus on building up his status on the international stage to further his earnings potential for the post PM part of his career :)

Why should I leave the UK when I'm happy to be here?

I was in London about 10 days ago and felt perfectly safe, thank you. Knife crime issues are directly related to gang issues. They need to be addressed, but they hardly equate to a country picking up people off the streets because they 'look foreign' and sticking them in concentration camps. If you think those two things are in any way similar, you aren't paying attention or you have an agenda.

You are of course fully entitled to your opinion on Starmer. However, the word 'cretin' is hideously ableist and better epithets are available. I suggest you use them.

You also clearly lack an understanding of how the UK legal system works. Let me explain it very simply: If you plead guilty to committing a crime, you end up in a track of the system that leads you straight to sentencing. Lucy Connolly knew this. She signed a document stating she understood the process and that she would likely receive a custodial sentence. She could have pleaded not guilty but chose not to.

Ricky Jones and the Manchester guys pleaded not guilty, which put them into a track of the system that leads to jury trial. Ricky Jones was found not guilty by a jury. Do I agree with that verdict? No. Is it how the UK system works? Yes. We'll see what happens to the Manchester attackers.

Now do you understand?

And all those examples illustrate how the rule of law works - and in the UK it's working fine thanks very much. That's what Americans call 'due process'.

Having private insurance would cover some of the costs. It's just getting the right plan. Some states do it better than others.

The USA actually leads the world in cutting edge therapies.

It has done until now, a true medical and scientific world power. I've always admired that about the US. And now there's the biggest unscientific moron on the planet in charge of health that's not gonna last much longer. Look at the heartbreaking cuts into essential immunotherapy research and weep.

I'm not sure you understand the word "dictatorship" OP. Try looking at countries with actual dictatorships for reference.

I watched an interesting Youtube video recently about how democracies end. It is usually by a populist getting legitimately elected, then dismantling the institutions behind them, which they get away with through a combination of popularity and fear.

USA may still be a democracy now, but Trump looks and behaves like the kind of leader who could end it.

Just getting the right plan.

The right plans are incredibly expensive and often do not cover cutting-edge treatments. If you have a good plan in the US (usually via your employer) then you will often still spend in the lower thousands a year before your individual and family deductibles and out-of-pockets are met. Accessing affordable care is also usually based on in-network providers which can limit choices and availability of specific care. It’s not fun and is really hard to navigate when you or a loved one are unwell. It’s a part -time job in itself.

If you don’t have a good plan and / or are eligible for Medicaid / Medicare then these are still very limited and under attack from Trump.

I live in the US and its not a dictatorship. Many of us are quite happy with Trump. The UK elected Starmer who is the most incompetent and worthless PM in my lifetime. You should be worrying more about your loss of freedom of speech and civil liberties, the two-tier justice system you have, the crumbling NHS and the overwhelming increase in crime rate and unfettered illegal immigration. I no longer recognize the UK when I go back and definitely do not feel safe. But yes, by all means, have a superior smug dig at Trump and those that voted for him.

The UK will never ever reach the depths the USA has fallen to. Open your eyes and look around you - the highest rates of drug-related deaths in the world - people literally dying on the streets, addicts staggering round unable to stand straight due to fentanyl use, others with huge, rotting necrotic wounds, violent crime out of control, gang culture, people unable to access adequate healthcare, others working until they're fit to drop, riddled with arthritis. Sickening.

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 17/08/2025 10:51

IwasatClaines · 15/08/2025 21:15

Yes I think it’s a dictatorship.

A very early clue was Trump’s refusal to accept his electoral defeat after his first term to the point that a mob was encouraged to come to Capitol Hill.
A mob that got pardoned when he got back in second time.

And Trump has only been in power since February second time around.

Edited

Agree, how he got back in after that stunt is still baffling to me. He showed exactly who he is right there.

100% this. It’s at the very least a stressful part-time job and even if you’re lucky to have good coverage, you will spend your time managing the admin of it and dealing with incorrect claims - that will likely still cost thousands in deductible and out of pocket.

Menopausalsourpuss · 17/08/2025 11:22

Alot of TDS on here. I've just looked it up and his approval rating is -12% with the American public. Starmers is -43% with the British public and he's only 1 year into his first term unlike Trump so he's WAY less popular. Posters on here probably think it's because the public are ignorant or could be because the American public know way more about America than aload of people thousands of miles away who get all their info from the BBC/Guardian. And ridiculous to blame Trump for all the problems in America, most of the drug/homeless problems are in Dem run states and local govt has way more power than in the UK.

God knows why Brits think their opinions on Trump matter, or what they hope to achieve by lecturing supposedly dumb Americans on their stupidity. The US elected him. Their choice, no one else’s. Look at the state the UK is in. How are Brits in a position to pontificate to anyone?

I am a Brit and I totally agree with You

Like Starmer is liked and loved by anyone much .

But your posts have made it clear that you absolutely do not... You can believe that we have a two tier justice system, but that belief is not borne out by the fact - and alternative facts really aren't a thing.
