Oh is that what it means? People say stuff and it's true.

I'm a millionaire.

And if you're not, blame someone else.

Looks like you're getting the hang of this. Award yourself someone elses valour as a prize.

I'm blaming 'illegals' if I'm not.

Two tier justice definitely exists. You cannot trust the justice system in this country. Just like you cannot trust the police or any other authorities. And you can definitely not trust the government. No wonder this country is fast becoming a third world country.

We don't use 'third world' any more.

I think the idea that justice needs to be seen to be done and therefore public opinion should count is a very, very dangerous one indeed. It's the sort of thing authoritarian governments do. It means social media witch hunts can influence justice. It's chilling that you think this is a good idea.

Yep, trial by social media is not something to aspire to.

One pleaded guilty and had dozens of racist hate tweets to her name, over many months... Sentenced according to Sentencing guidelines, written long ago.

The other pleaded not guilty, tried in a crown court, one alleged incident, which then found him No Guilty of.

Its incredible you keep banging this drum...

dozens of racist hate tweets to her name

Is that claim accurate or a gross exaggeration?

I don't know about dozens, but it certainly wasn't about one single tweet: https://www.cps.gov.uk/cps/news/updated-sentence-childminder-admits-inciting-racial-hatred-over-social-media-post

As I have said before: she had form.

“The prosecution case included evidence which showed that racist tweets were sent out from Mrs Connolly’s X account both in the weeks and months before the Southport attacks – as well as in the days after"

How many can be sent over several months?

Have a read? this wasn't a one off...

investigations showed that whilst the account was active she had published other messages indicating her views about illegal immigrants

'other messages' doesn't really suggest "dozens of racist hate tweets" even if some of the messages were racist so I think you have exaggerated.

The timing was crucial. And the apparently panicked entreaties by her family to remove the post in question before she eventually deleted it is some indication as to how incendiary it was. She definitely had form.

It doesn't matter whether it was 'dozens' or any other number. You appear to be hung up on that because you want her to be a victim.

The fact of the matter is that this was not a one off for her. She had form for posting racist crap. And appearances notwithstanding, she must have known that was wrong.

Yes, it does - facts are important so you keep saying. * *

I thought you were only tried for the crime in hand. Juries are according to my understanding unaware of other crimes, eg they do not know if an accused rapist has a record of sexual assault.

Yes, that is true. But they are taken into account in sentencing.

DuncinToffee · 16/08/2025 19:50

I'd like to think the majority of posters on here would have been horrified reading Connolly's posts and had reported them before blocking her.

I am however not so sure now.

Regarding bail - just looking back at what Keir Starmer said at the time;

I utterly condemn the far-right thuggery we have seen this weekend.
Be in no doubt: those who have participated in this violence will face the full force of the law.
The police will be making arrests.
Individuals will be held on remand
Charges will follow. And convictions will follow.
I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder.
Whether directly or those whipping up this action online, and then running away themselves.

The 'dozens' reference came from another poster, not from the CPS. If you read the CPS link I posted, it is perfectly clear that Connolly's previous history of posting racist tweets was a factor in her sentencing. As indeed it should be. We do not know how many racist tweets she posted - but clearly it was enough for the CPS to take it into consideration.

Why do you want to defend this woman?

More than 1,200 people have now been arrested across the country. We are making technology work for us, by capturing the images of the perpetrators on CCTV, so even if they have not yet been arrested their faces are known and they will not escape the law. As I said yesterday, no phoney human rights concerns about publishing the photographs will get in the way of bringing these criminals to justice. Anyone charged with violent disorder and other serious offences should expect to be remanded in custody, not let back on the streets; and anyone convicted should expect to go to jail.

Cameron after the 2011 riots.

Of course a PM will talk tough in these situations.

Judges who would usually reserve shrinking prison spaces for the most serious offenders sent 80% of riot suspects to the cells to await trial – with the total at more than 120 by Friday. The minority who were allowed bail were almost all young.

Keir Starmer praised the “robust and swift response” of the criminal justice system, saying judges should “send a very powerful message to anybody involved, either directly or online, that you are likely to be dealt with within a week”. He added: “Nobody, but nobody, should be involved themselves in this disorder.”

Time and again defence solicitors applied for bail. He cares for his partner who has cancer, said one. He is effectively carer to his parents, said another. He has no previous convictions, said others. Each time the submissions were quickly rejected by a district judge.

Because the bloody country was on the verge of going up in flames @Clavinova. There’s no winning, is there? If the leader of a new government hadn’t taken the toughest possible stance there would have been endless accusations of weakness and supporting lawlessness. I bet you weren’t so critical in 2011.

So have you read the CPS link I posted? Because in reality, their take on this case is what matters - not that of a poster on Mumsnet.

Why don't you read the link and then tell me why you want to defend this woman?

Previous actions can be taken into account during sentencing.

i really would like an answer to the question why so many people are keen to defend Connelly.

Indeed, we found out a few weeks later that the leader of the new government had accepted dozens of freebie suits, dozens of designer glasses and dozens of free concert tickets - it all went downhill from there.
