There’s no winning, is there?

Indeed, we found out a few weeks later that the leader of the new government had accepted dozens of freebie suits, dozens of designer glasses and dozens of free concert tickets - it all went downhill from there.

Small beer compared to the astronomical frauds with PPE equipment of the previous cartel.

Some very fine derailing there, Clav. You are funny. I have missed your posts.

Me too.

Me three.

I quite like the multiple use of ''dozen'

CurlewKate · 16/08/2025 21:16

Love the idea of Starmer cackling like Scrooge McDuck over his piles of free spectacles(all properly declared, btw). Wot no gold wallpaper? No duckhouse? Not a very good freeloader, is he?

You really are Queen of the non sequitur, aren’t you?

Ah yes, classic whataboutery.

Yep, trial by social media is not something to aspire to.

That’s not what was suggested. It was the pp’s take more than anything.

It wasn't what was explicitly suggested, no. But it amounted to the same thing.

You are the one who said justice had to be seen to be done, and that meant taking public opinion into account. What did you think that would look like in practice on the shop floor in the courts?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 16/08/2025 22:05

Of course not. I was referencing a well known quote from a chief justice before social media existed. He wasn’t referring to what you suggested either.

So, in these two specific cases, how would you like to have seen justice done?

pointythings · 16/08/2025 21:23

Ah yes, classic whataboutery.

Labour supporters are absolute professionals at whataboutery so that's slightly hypocritical of you. The stock answer to everything is "but what about the Tories"........so maybe don't use that as an accusation against others

It was nothing about it being what about the Tories, we were quite logically and legitimately comparing Cameron and Starmer’s virtually identical handling of riots. Suddenly, apropos of nothing, Lord Alli’s donations popped up out of nowhere. Call it a red herring, a non sequitur or whataboutery but that’s exactly what it was.

Yes frustrating isn't it, when trying to hold 1 action to account that posters just start throwing in non sequiturs/whataboutery comments?

Not really. I thought Clav’s contribution was quite amusing.

DuncinToffee · 17/08/2025 08:37

This still goes unanswered

I really would like an answer to the question why so many people are keen to defend Connelly.

I'm also keen to hear this.

What should have been done differently and who should have been responsible for intervening to make this happen?

MaturingCheeseball · 17/08/2025 08:49

Regardless of guilty/not guilty pleas, I do not think either party was blameless.

I am not defending LC because talking about burning down houses/hostels is abhorrent. BUT imo rabble-rousing and shouting about cutting people’s throats - even if you detest them - is not “innocent” behaviour. There are posters who seem keen to minimise this. What if someone were suggesting cutting the throats of, say, another religious group or some women?

The two-tier justice for me is engaging Garden Court Chambers which chooses to represent “causes”. He had expert advice not just from this law firm but from someone who knew about GCC in the first place, which implies that this whole business was more “activism” than “bloke lets off steam and gets carried away”.

Not one person has excused what Jones said. It was abhorrent and he should be kicked out of the Labour party.

Starmer's reaction and Cameron's reaction to and their words about the 2024 and 2011 riots were very similar. Yet Starmer has been accused of all sorts on this thread and on SM generally. It is not whataboutery to point that out.

Eta: not a Labour supporter. I am a signed up Plaid Cymru supporter.

Not a Labour supporter. It says a lot about you that you make that assumption.

And it was blatant whataboutery, not related in the slightest to the discussion at hand.

BIossomtoes · 17/08/2025 09:24

The Telegraph (admittedly in its Comment section) is calling Lucy Connolly “a martyr to old Britain, and the thousands like her who comprise the silent majority.” I despair.

They really ought to rename themselves Reform Daily at this point.
