Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

When I first got my dog, I found it a little stomach churning.
But then he once swallowed another dog’s poo whole before I could stop him and threw it back up again, still whole, on my kitchen floor.

Just picking up his regular poos hasn’t bothered me since having to clear that up.

TheHouseElf · 15/08/2025 17:29

Its just part of the deal of having a dog, just like taking them for walks everyday, even if I don't feel like it. Didn't enjoy changing nappies when my 2 were small, but again, it was part and parcel of it. Got to say that my kids nappies were sometimes a lot more gross to deal with than any of the dog's daily poo, lol.

MomsGotInk · 15/08/2025 17:32

It’s just part of being a responsible dog owner. Not enjoyable but a necessary evil. Less horrendous if it’s solid…💀

MacroBetty · 15/08/2025 17:35

Something satisfying about warm poo in the bag. Cool poo is gross

Hotflushesandchilblains · 15/08/2025 17:45

Sometimes it bothers me more than others - sometimes it makes me retch to pick it up (but I still do). I think for me its about not thinking too much - dog poos, you swoop down and bag it, bin it, jobs a good 'un. Thinking about it too much makes it harder to deal with.

Liss19 · 15/08/2025 17:46

Not going to lie here, our dog is pretty old at 14 and when (bless his heart) he is no longer with us i can't wait to not have to pick up dog sh!t 😅. I wouldnt mind if he actually sat in one place and did it but he walks around so theres poo bits all over. Thankfully his poo is always firm, silver lining and all that. Weve had dogs for about 27 years but ive decided that since we have 3 youngish kids now and less time we wont be having another dog. When we got him we didnt have any children and we actually said we didnt want any kids 🤣 (long story) but we both grew up and we agreed on 2 but i wanted one more try to get a girl 😆

Well it's not the same because humans are evolved to find their offspring much less disgusting.

For all of our history humans have evolved alongside animals, living and working in the same buildings as them.

It's only in recent times that some closeted, feeble humans have become so removed from nature that they have a fit of the vapours at the thought of excrement despite having a hearty shit once or twice a day from their own backside.

Don’t read this then..

DiordreBarlow · 15/08/2025 18:17

Or this -

"In 2024, sewage was discharged into UK waterways for a total of 3.614 million hours"

This is the real poo shock in the UK. Not dog crap.

I’ve just had to pick up cat poo, yet again, from the gravel in my front garden. It was covered in flies and smelled far worse than dog poo. It’s not even my cat.

BigButtons · 15/08/2025 18:34

This is the very reason I could never have a dog.

ConnieHeart · 15/08/2025 18:46

Zempy · 15/08/2025 15:49

Do you have children OP? It’s the same principle really.

I absolutely wouldn’t want to change another shitty nappy for a child that wasn’t mine. I wouldn’t pick up dog poo that wasn’t from my dog.

When it’s your own baby/fur baby it becomes manageable.

Luckily ebf babies' poo doesn't smell. Obviously this changes once they're weened

Yeah mine were EBF. Not the dog… 😂

The bag can't protect you from the smell, though. Nor the seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth...

I have no idea how professional dog walkers manage it with a group.

Edit: I decided I was done with shit the day I left nursing.

LurcherMumma · 15/08/2025 18:54

I've cleaned up three dog poos , 2 cat, changed 2 poopy nappies and cleaned my own off the toilet tosay. Sometimes you just got to get on with it!

What I can't deal with is my dogs "grassy ass" when she has a 💩 hanging out.

The same reason plumbers, sewage plant workers, cleaners, care assistants etc deal with your shit.

They're paid to deal with it.

Zippedydodah · 15/08/2025 19:04

Cat shit revolts me far more than my dogs’ poo. I hate cats that shit in my garden.

Exactly why I feed my dog raw food - poo mostly hard and not too stinky. some of the stuff left though is absolutely horrendous.

No need for raw to achieve that. Just decent quality food.

RunningNananananananananana · 15/08/2025 20:42

She's raw fed, she's a small dog, we joke and call them rabbit poops 🤣

I see poops of non raw fed dogs and want to vom 🤮

mathanxiety · 15/08/2025 20:53

Its the reason I never had and never will have a dog as a pet.

That is just to do with cheap food, not because it is raw.

My friend feeds hers a good quality, expensive dry food and her dogs poops are still gross in comparison (the smell/consistency)🤢

ForeverPombear · 15/08/2025 13:08

I've got a large dog and picking his up doesn't bother me at all. I have picked other dogs poos up on walks after owners have left them there and it's made me gag.

Yes this! I am absolutely fine picking my own dogs poop up, doesn’t bother me. Another dogs poop, ew! Love dogs but I struggle with their poop but not my own dogs.
I don’t think I’d like to change the nappy of another baby either!

ClaredeBear · 15/08/2025 21:17

I’m not a squeamish person generally which is a good job as I pick up other people’s dog’s poo!

My dog is on cheaper food and her poos are firm and just smell of poo.
All dogs are different. Some thrive on cheap food, and some thrive on raw.
