Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

I've got a large dog and picking his up doesn't bother me at all. I have picked other dogs poos up on walks after owners have left them there and it's made me gag.

Good for you, if knew where you lived I'd send you a massive box of chocolates / wine.

Rubyupbeat · 16/08/2025 10:30

I have 2 big dogs and their poo doesn't bother me , but I couldn't cope with another dogs poo.
It was like when my boys were babies, I could obviously cope with their nappies, but never another babies...well, my sisters babies were ok too.

Agree picking up warm poo is preferable to a cold poo.

Agree with pp, dog size poo is part of my criteria when selecting a dog. I couldn't cope with picking up a poo larger than my fist.

I can cope with small, warm and squishy.

My DH is in charge of garden clean up and makes him heave, so doubt we'll get another dog, when the time comes.

Dog size isn't always a factor in poo quantity. It's more determined by what they're fed. My giant dog does tiny poos in comparison with the output of much smaller dogs.

This! I've done the same. What's worse is when the other dog poo is cold 😱

It's not great but just part of looking after your dog. I watched the latter part of Clarksons Farm the other day and the cess pit was being drained and cleared for the first time in at least 60 years. As the vile sludge was drained into a waiting tanker, a shit covered man wearing an aqualung emerged from the cess pit where he'd been sorting out a blockage. That is a step too far for 99.9 percent of us. Even Clarkson turned green. So, dog poo ? It's easy.

BadWoIf · 16/08/2025 10:50

I used to walk a neighbour's dog when the neighbour was poorly, and dreaded picking his poos up (although I always did)...the sensation of warm and squishy poo against my fingers really disguseted me, even though there was a plastic bag between me and the poo.

I have my own dog now, and somehow picking up her poos doesn't worry me at all. Cleaning up her vomit, however Envy (not envy)

One of my dogs was this morning 😆 He did it in the garden, got a small shovel it gets it up.

Beautifulhaiku · 16/08/2025 11:30

I’ve always wanted a dog and never been that bothered about the idea of picking up poo, and now I have one I barely think about it (always pick it up, but it is not something that affects me at all).

However, my husband was disgusted by the idea and it put him off having a dog. Now we have her, I think it’s no longer a big deal for him at all - he would rather not have to do it but it doesn’t affect his day! You just get used to it, and it’s a part of caring for this living creature that you love. He’s still disgusted by the idea if it’s not hers, and when she has a bad tummy it’s still pretty horrible.

I think people who leave poo aren’t necessarily doing it because they’re disgusted, I reckon it’s more they just can’t be arsed carrying a bag of poo about and have probably forgotten to bring bags, or just too lazy. We have poo bags attached to our dog’s lead and in all bags etc so they’re always at hand, but a lot of people won’t bother to do this. I think it’s so so awful and gives dogs & dog owners a bad name, and shows such a lack of respect for other people and your neighbourhood. I hate stepping in dog poo as much as any dog-hater out there!

VikingLady · 16/08/2025 11:30

I used to live near a Rottweiler who did double handers. The owner looped his lead round his ankle so he could pick up the poo. Huge. He said he needed extra large bags.

I never thought I’d be able to get used to my cats’ pops though, and I have. If they’re going to miss the litter tray I’d always prefer it to be an easily picked up poo to a messy wee with a smell that lingers.

Emmz1510 · 16/08/2025 13:36

If often wondered this, as a non dog owner. The odd time I’ve had to pick up dog poo from my garden because some twat has let their dog go there, it turns my stomach and I’m dry heaving with the grossness of it 🤢.
I’m guessing the people who own dogs feel it’s worth it for the rewards of having a dog.
I also always wonder, their butts must be awfully dirty after. A friend of my mine says she wipes her wee cockapoo’s bum after he goes, but you never see folk doing this out and about with their dog. I think of their poor floors when the dog sits down (more 🤢).

IceMaidenIceBear · 16/08/2025 13:42

I have no idea how I've got through 48 years of dog ownership without realising how fixated non-dog people are on dog poo and dog bums. This thread has been a real eye opener.

It’s not great but it’s part of having a dog.

The ones that are still steaming when it’s cold are the worst.

Wrong! They're the best - one poo bag in each pocket in cold weather means warm hands 😄

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 16/08/2025 13:48

@Emmz1510 if your friend has to wipe her dog's bottom after every defecation then something is not working as it should and she needs to take the dog to the vet.

This has already been addressed. They do not have dirty bumholes

Your friend is nuts, unless the dog has a very hairy arse 😆

I utterly hate dogs. They have no use in society. The shit they leave on pavements is disgusting. Get rid of all of them 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Idk it’s just poo innit. I poo, my dog poos, the King poos. Obviously I don’t enjoy picking it up but it takes like 3 seconds and that’s it. I don’t enjoy wiping my own arse either.

The king poos?!

echt · 17/08/2025 02:18

To respond to @Fragmentedbrain, I feel no disgust in picking up after my dog, no more than changing my DD's nappy when she was a baby.

I pick up every poo I see when out walking him. To be fair, where I am in Melbourne, despite the many dogs, very rarely has dog shit on the street, more confined to exercise areas. It makes me go aarrghhh but I still pick it up.

I'm not sure I'd do it in the UK if the dog-bashing threads are anything to go by as it appears to be wall-to-wall.

I sometimes walk someone else's dog: somehow, it's more fun to look after someone else's dog than to have my own, and it's great being able to hand the dog back after the walk. I don't mind the picking up poo; I even pick up others left by neglectful dog owners: I see it as saving somebody from stepping in it. It's a bonus if I dispose of six bags after a walk. I have to clear my cat's poos as well, as he always does it in the same spot in the garden.

But what I can't stand about dogs is the fucking BARKING, which is why I will not get a dog myself.

I also walk other people's dogs. I use a website called borrow my doggy. I do it as it helps my mental health, and I agree that it is great to do the fun stuff give the dogs back. I'm not a fan of excessive barking either

Tonight, on Planet Earth II, we venture deep into the wilds of the internet, where one of the most curious creatures can be found…the common internet troll.

Usually found lurking under a grotty little bridge, it emerges not in daylight, but in the comment sections, forums, and threads of the unsuspecting. Observe its behaviour: rather than contribute to the conversation in any meaningful way, it survives on provocation, feeding hungrily on outrage and attention.

The wise observer does not engage. For as with all creatures of this sort, it is silence, not battle, that starves the troll. Left without reaction, it slinks back beneath its bridge, waiting for its next chance to scuttle into the light.
