Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

They're all different. Ours didn't get along with raw and they do better poo on a good quality lamb based kibble than anything with poultry.

My friend feeds hers a good quality, expensive dry food and her dogs poops are still gross in comparison (the smell/consistency)🤢

There is another reason then. There is no scientific evidence that raw is any better. I switched from raw to dry for my dog, no difference in poo at all (apart from when he buries his face in cow shit!)

TheGreatWesternShrew · 15/08/2025 22:16

Of course it’s gross but it’s just what you have to do. It’s the trade off for having a pet and a nice neighbourhood.

Even though it’s gross I don’t really think about it. It’s over in a second and I don’t even smell it. I find blood or snot way worse.

Snot is my absolute kryptonite.
Small kids making snot bubbles. Or when one has a huge bogey and then it is suddenly gone. Nooooo.

No need for raw to achieve that. Just decent quality food.

Oh we have tried all sorts of food over the years as we travel with our 9 year old dog so spent weeks introducing different foods as we cant take raw with us - we haven't found one! The consequences of some have been horrific and refused to eat some. For our dog raw works unless its beef !! But he is quite happy to eat any food left in the park!!

My lab is allergic to chicken (most unfortunate). I took a while to find Orijen dry. It has made such a difference to coat condition etc.

I couldn't carry on with raw due to my wife having a reduced immune system. Did a bunch of research on raw, and the only scientific research I could find showed that cross contamination to owners of things like e-coli was high. Dry is much more convenient. Started him on Burns, which was good apart from the itching, went through several before settling on Orijen.

I don't think anyone has "misinterpreted" your post. @Fragmentedbrain

Your comments like "some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch"
Plus follow up comments clearly show you are not after people telling their experiences and view. You want people to go on a mass ewwwww its so disgusting..

I have a dog not a pooch.. (I do genuinely have a hound but not in the way you used it. My dog is a hound breed a specific type of dog breed Hound - Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hound

I do not dress fancily clad. More a frumpy middle aged dresser - I'm ok with that.

I do not have a luxe takeaway coffee with me if I go dog walking More likely a reusable cup and on rare occations I do have a takeaway coffee its a plain coffee nothing luxe.

I do not swing the bag merrily after collecting it

I don't love it nor do I hate it. Much like when I changed nappies on my children

I dont touch the "seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth" for longer than it takes to quickly scoop it up into the bag" (tnx for that over the top description btw -not) you can btw get scoopers for this if its a struggle HandiScoop Pro - Tall - Small Pet Select UK https://smallpetselect.co.uk/products/handi-scoop-pro?variant=15585825718315&tw_HandiScoop source=google&twHandiScoop adid=632448095996&twHandiScoop campaign=18792930877&twHandiScoop kwdid=pla-293946777986&gadHandiScoop source=1&gadHandiScoop campaignid=18792930877&gclid=CjwKCAjwtfvEBhAmEiwA-DsKjutBtNu1Z3qDADMUVFYOcBO-aRhe1q054N1UkxRgL9eMTsYnKfb6WxoCWd4QAvDBwE https://share.google/rDLkQNEYkf6YVoJ2Z

I don't care for the smell but I care for my dog and I care about other people having clean spaces. Hence I tidy up after my dog.

My dog gives me great pleasure and research suggests that
People who love animals tend to experience more empathy, social connectedness, and higher oxytocin levels than people who do not love animals.

My dog enriches my life. Due to that I in return deal with the downside of picking up his poop. It doesnt disgust me.

I think you should quit trying too hard with the "creative writing" bollocks 🙄

henlake7 · 16/08/2025 05:59

I think when it comes to poop its all about the context.
You would pick up your own dogs poop but other dogs is abit gross, same as kids.
Im a nurse and have absolutely no problem cleaning up peoples poop on the job but would be totally grossed out if I come across people poop on the street.

Sairy129 · 16/08/2025 07:56

Fragmentedbrain · 15/08/2025 13:48

God I know. I can't stand walking behind someone doing this.

Then don't walk behind them. Cross over the road or go another way. I don't know, you're moaning about people who don't pick up poo, but also moaning about walking behind someone who has picked it up.

I'm a dog trainer so I pick up not only my own dog's poo, but the poo of other dogs in my care. It's just part of life. It rarely grosses me out really, unless it's a particularly sloppy or smelly one, and even then I just deal with it and try not to breathe in, as you would with a disgusting nappy.

I don't tend to carry the poo bags, but have a special thing on my waist that I can tie them to until I reach a bin to put them in.

EnglishRain · 16/08/2025 07:58

Mine won’t poo in a built up area. They do it at home or in the rough on a field walk. Literally wouldn’t do it in town no matter how desperate they were, they’d have to have diarrhoea and no control.

hididdlyho · 16/08/2025 08:05

Never really given it much though, so I guess it doesn't bother me! Had 4 dogs and they were all kibble fed then moved onto raw with helimoor mud supplement. Poos are definitely smaller and a better consistency with raw, less smelly farts as well. The worst was my MIL's GSD who was on some ridiculously expensive Hills 'prescription' food, massive loose smelly shits, often a two bag job to pick it all up.

BadActingParsley · 16/08/2025 08:27

It’s better than cat poo. Marginally. It’s just part of the deal, stoop and scoop. And pray it’s not a runny one.

Girlintheframe · 16/08/2025 08:37

If a dog is fed properly/well the poo doesn’t really smell. It’s also pretty firm so easy to quickly scoop up. If your dog is unwell, well that’s a different story and yes it can make my stomach turn.

Standingtree · 16/08/2025 08:37

Perhaps the dogs are disgusted by how much plastics you use and throw away?

@Standingtree

like poo bags? They’re plastic. Yeah, dog owners should just scoop up the shit with their bare hands. Save the planet! 🌎

@Girlintheframe

nah, a dogs shit stinks whatever its diet

Onleemoi · 16/08/2025 08:42

I’m just going to leave it where it is. Would hate to offend anyone by picking it up.

Maraudingmarauders · 15/08/2025 13:10

The only thing I don’t like is if you’re off on a long walk and they poo in the first 15minutes and there’s no bin for the next 90….
Carrying it around is not so fun. Especially on a warm day.

I can see this thread has stretched to 10 pages (and maybe turned into a bun fight by now?!) which I've not read, but in case it's not been mentioned I bought this for storing dog poo - bagged obviously - when on a long walk. It's great, although it does stink when you open it at the end to put the poo bag in the bin.

As an 8 year old I got bullied by my sister to clean the dog poo that the 2 puppy's my mum and her boyfriend at the time got. They were really boisterous labrador/doberman crosses and my mum made us walk them. They dragged us down the street as they were too strong, and my sister made me clean their shite. They trashed our house and I got septicemia from one of them scratching me. Needless to say they were rehomed

NoTouch · 16/08/2025 08:50

HappiestSleeping · 15/08/2025 13:10

I was just about to say I'd much rather pick up a poo than change a nappy.

Also, feeding the dog a decent diet generally means well formed poo that isn't especially smelly, so it is not a big chore.

Don't get me wrong though, it isn't my favourite part of dog ownership.

this

Decent high protein food, don’t over feed and don’t over treat, especially with human UPF food then poos, even for my Labrador were small-ish, well formed, firm, and didn’t smell much from arms length and were no problem.

If he had an upset stomach (usually dead things, sheep poo, food litter when out 🤮) it was throughly unpleasant.

CaramelGhost · 16/08/2025 08:51

It does....but you gotta do what you gotta do

SunflowerLife · 16/08/2025 08:52

I've got a small dog so it does small poos. I use thicker bags that contain it properly without it coming into contact with my skin and I take hand gel on dog walks. You get used to doing it too.

TunnocksOrDeath · 16/08/2025 08:54

Picking up after my sibling's dog takes seconds, it's really not onerous. It's cat people that gross me out. Letting their animals out to shit with impunity in parks and other people's gardens, or keeping a tray of cat poo in their kitchen where flies can sit on it then settle on every other surface. Bleeeergh. I've also noticed that cat people will often let their cats sit and groom themselves in places where they would never in a million years place a pair of shoes, for example.
I get that you can't stop cats from doing this stuff and I would never be cruel to an animal, so my solution would be "don't keep cats". I should add though, that IMO irresponsible dog owners who don't pick up, or don't control their dogs should be heavily fined, they are awful people.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 16/08/2025 08:57

It's just poo. It's a natural bodily function. I used to clean it off people and walls and furniture when I worked as a carer. I certainly don't mind picking up my dog's!

I find it so weird that people get hung up on a basic bodily function. Do you find sex and those fluids disgusting? No? Why poo then?
