Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

I raw feed some my medium breed dog poops small pellets that don’t smell only once a day - kibble poos are grim 😂

Do you have children OP? It’s the same principle really.

I absolutely wouldn’t want to change another shitty nappy for a child that wasn’t mine. I wouldn’t pick up dog poo that wasn’t from my dog.

When it’s your own baby/fur baby it becomes manageable.

Well it's not the same because humans are evolved to find their offspring much less disgusting.

jurassic park deal with it GIF

Fun fact: It amounts to 1000 tonnes of dog poo a day in the UK.

And dog owners find their own dogs less disgusting. It is part of our duty as responsible dog owners. It is not negotiable. You just get on with it and you get used to it.

Same for people who have to clean up other people's poo as part of their job (like carers etc). They become desensitised.

Omeara · 15/08/2025 16:02

It’s just poo and you have a bag. Don’t breathe in at the wrong time and it’s fine. It’s far worse when it’s cold.

Picking up poo is the very small price you pay for the privilege of loving, and being loved by, a dog.

erm well it didn’t work for me … I found some (many) of my offspring’s poo as disgusting if not more so ..

Idk it’s just poo innit. I poo, my dog poos, the King poos. Obviously I don’t enjoy picking it up but it takes like 3 seconds and that’s it. I don’t enjoy wiping my own arse either.

Its so much less nasty than fox poo. I have always lived a rural life so cow poo, horse poo...sheep, donkeys, badgers.....if you get hit on the head by a seagull poo....now that will make your ears ring.

Why does this post sound as if it's either been generated by AI or (more likely) written by a journo? It isn't worded like the usual puerile dog bashing thread OP's are. 🤔It's almost as though it's a piece of research.

waaaaaah · 15/08/2025 16:16

A bloke near me has a giant dog, like the size of a small pony. He has trained it to go on command and then stands behind it and catches the poo in a bag rather than bend to pick it up! That to me is more gross than just getting it off the floor. The potential for sloppy poo related disaster is just too much. Anyway to answer the question, when I had a big dog yes it was pretty disgusting a lot of the time, hence I won’t be getting another dog.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 15/08/2025 16:26

A friend who is also a dog owner regularly shoves her filled poo bag down the drain during a walk 🤮

MuckFusk · 15/08/2025 16:34

It bothers me to have to wipe my ass too but of course I manage to do it. It's part of life just as picking up shit is part of life if you love dogs. 🤷

BreatheAndFocus · 15/08/2025 16:37

It’s poo! All poo is the same - including yours, OP! I can think of lots of similar faux questions about human poo, but I won’t. Responsible dog owners pick up their dog’s poo to keep the environment clean and pleasant. The ones who don’t pick it up are just lazy, not people who are disgusted by poo.

What a weird thing to start a thread about! Unless you’re a child, of course, then poo is infinitely funny, disgusting, and interesting! 💩

I've been a nanny for 20 years so I am not evolved to find a Childs poo any less disgusting then a strangers and I feel the same way about dogs poo (not only my own dogs...) as I do theirs....It's just poo, we all do it, we all clean it and hand soap and poo bags exist! Sometimes you get a truly revolting one (more often the child then the dog tbh...) but you deal and dispose of it.

The truly revolting poo comes from cats, the smell of that is incredible 😷

RanchRat · 15/08/2025 16:41

In the winter if you pop it in your pocket it makes your hands lovely and warm.

KnewYearKnewMe · 15/08/2025 16:46

Gnarab24 · 15/08/2025 13:10

Funnily enough I find picking up cold poo (when I’m picking up the garden pops) more stomach churning than a ‘just laid’ poo.

this! Totally agree, @Gnarab24- cold poo is much worse than warm fresh ones!

TaupeLemur · 15/08/2025 16:50

I don’t think about it. Dog goes, I collect it quickly.
thats all. It’s no big deal, and part of having a dog, like the cost of the vet insurance or having to take them out 2/3 times a day regardless of the weather.
Small price to pay, quite frankly, for our sweet, affectionate dog who the whole family adore.

RoseAlone · 15/08/2025 16:56

I have a big dog and he can deposit enough to need two or three bags at one time. It's really not a problem though, it's just the way he is.

I think its the same if its your own dog. You love them, so the poo isnt as bad.

For me it goes:
My dogs poo > other dog poo > my kids nappies > family kids nappies
My absolute nightmare would be changing nappies of kids i dont know at all. I find dogs much less disgusting tbh 😄

But i worked as a vet nurse for ages, so nothing about animals grosses me out anymore.

Happy to clean up after my dog, just wish others would clean up after theirs. We have a small cockapoo so not massive.

If so, how did you cope??

Actually on a cold winters day the warmth is a welcome bonus

Bluedenimdoglover · 15/08/2025 17:14

If you can wipe your own backside without throwing up, then you can pick up after your own dog. Get a mutt, you'll find it easy

GaladrielHiggins · 15/08/2025 17:16

OnlyHerefortheBiscuits · 15/08/2025 14:24

Incorrect, dogs do not walk around with "pooey bum holes" unless there is a medical issue such as dihorreha.

When a dog defecates, the anal opening everts slightly; basically, the muscular ring pushes outward so the stool can pass cleanly. Once they’re done, the sphincter contracts and the tissue (with any residue traces) retracts back inside the body, sealing the opening.

Humans don’t have the same clean-snap closure and err...everting muscular ring around our errmm... hole, which is why we need to wipe.

Dogs’ anatomy is built to leave no residue behind.

I’ve always wondered why my dogs never need to wipe their buns, I feel properly enlightened by that!

I can vouch for it. My dog some times has a poo in her sleep (she is very old). I have seen it all happen in real time. I need get a life 😆

Why do I get the feeling this OP doesn’t understand “fur baby”? 😂😂😂
