Dog people - how does the poo not disgust you?

I live in a dog dense urban environment. Every day I see some fancily clad person walking along with their luxe takeaway coffee and their pooch only for said hound to hunker down, quivering with the bodily effort, to bestow a big steaming pile of pick me up now onto the pavement.

I mean I know the answer is that increasingly often it clearly does disgust them and that's why they leave it for other people to step in.

But seriously - do you feel less disgusted about poo in general? Do you think your own dog's poo is better (just as one's own child's nappies are less terrible than those of a random)? Or do you sit in dread of the next time it comes up?

OP posts:

I have owned cats, Guinea pigs and now have my first dog. She produces 3 massive shits per day.

cats were the worse. So much so , it’s put me off owning a cat again.

Ddog with soon move out with DD1. Will probably be pet free for the first time in about 20 years. I would have a cat but for the poo and vomit

Spidey66 · 15/08/2025 15:17

Oh ffs not another dog hating thread. :bangshead:

Yes it’s not my favourite task but I do it as a responsible dog owner. It’s surely no worse to changing a baby’s nappy, surely?

The bag can't protect you from the smell, though. Nor the seeping, squishy intestine derived warmth...

They should do, if dog poo bags which are usually scented, and tied up properly

BotterMon · 15/08/2025 15:21

No problem for me. I have horses too; they do big poos but smell nice.

Have also done Manual Bowel Evacuation on humans with high level spinal cord injury - usually smell far worse than dogs as a human diet isn't as good.

Baby nappies are the worst - especially when it's gone up their backs and down their legs.

BeardofHagrid · 15/08/2025 15:23

It makes me ill when I see dog walkers carrying those little bags around, usually dangling from a limp wrist 😂🤢

Don't look then. At least they are being responsible. Dog owners can't win on here.

Idk it’s just poo innit. I poo, my dog poos, the King poos. Obviously I don’t enjoy picking it up but it takes like 3 seconds and that’s it. I don’t enjoy wiping my own arse either.

This. No one likes poo (unless they are a special kind of weirdo). Cat poo is so much worse IMO.

stargirl1701 · 15/08/2025 15:26

It doesn’t bother me. I would far rather have a clean urban environment. I did cloth nappies with DC when they were babies and reusable period pants with them now. We live rurally between an organic farm and a ‘normal’ farm. Poo is part of life.

Macaroni46 · 15/08/2025 15:26

Along with revulsion at picking up the poo, I can’t get my head around the fact that people allow their dogs to sit on furniture and sleep in their beds with their bum holes touching the fabric etc where the poo came out. Makes me gag thinking about it. (The dog’s bum holes. Though human ones are equally gross)

My dog's bumhole is covered by her tail. Greyhounds don't tend to sit as they find it uncomfortable. When she is laying down, it is not touching anything.

scalt · 15/08/2025 15:31

I sometimes walk someone else's dog: somehow, it's more fun to look after someone else's dog than to have my own, and it's great being able to hand the dog back after the walk. I don't mind the picking up poo; I even pick up others left by neglectful dog owners: I see it as saving somebody from stepping in it. It's a bonus if I dispose of six bags after a walk. I have to clear my cat's poos as well, as he always does it in the same spot in the garden.

But what I can't stand about dogs is the fucking BARKING, which is why I will not get a dog myself.

TicklishMintDuck · 15/08/2025 15:33

You realise that you poo too, right?

FancyFeline · 15/08/2025 15:38

Maybe we've been lucky with our dog but I have never noticed a particularly strong smell when he goes! The cat, however... 😱

OuterSpaceCadet · 15/08/2025 15:43

randomusername03 · 15/08/2025 13:05

i have small dog for precisely this reason. her poops are lucky to be the size of my pinkie. I couldn't deal with steaming piles of shit mountins.

Funnily enough my friend's tiny dog does massive turds and my medium dog does small ones. Prior to this I always assumed the size correlated!

OP I don't love the dog poo AT ALL. However in general I know that growing up in a household with a dog is good for the immune system, and you do get used to using poo bags pretty quickly. People that don't pick up enrage me.

Dogs' arseholes are surprisingly clean. Probably cleaner than most people's hands.

When a dog defecates, the anal opening everts slightly; basically, the muscular ring pushes outward so the stool can pass cleanly.

Once they’re done, the sphincter contracts and the tissue (with any residue traces) retracts back inside the body, sealing the opening.

Humans don’t have the same clean-snap closure and err...pop out muscular ring around our arsehole, which is why we need to wipe.

Dogs’ anatomy is built to leave no residue behind. which is handy, since they're covered in fur.

It's a brilliant design.

IceMaidenIceBear · 15/08/2025 15:46

In agreement with many others - cat poo is far worse to deal with than dog! There is no smell on earth worse than the tail of a long haired cat with diarrhoea.

Our cats have also sometimes made poo stains on our furniture and rugs, but we've never had any similar issues with our equally long coated dogs.

Cherrysoup · 15/08/2025 15:47

Of course it’s disgusting, it sometimes really stinks! But even more disgusting would be a child falling it/someone stepping in it, so it gets picked up. I hate accidentally picking up some other dog’s poo, cold dog poo is, for some reason, particularly horrible.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/08/2025 15:48

It's a living creature that depends upon me for its survival and welfare.

As such, cleaning up after it is a non-negotiable. Anything about the nature of it - smell, consistency, size, temperature - is irrelevant, it is just excrement and getting into conniptions over it is ridiculous. Same applies to dogs, cats, horses, sheep, goats, hamsters and small children or adults that need care.

It's just ridiculous to make a fuss over something that's your responsibility to deal with. There are more enjoyable activities related to the producer, but when it comes down to it, I'm not bothered in the slightest.

Frankly, I don't give a shit.

Wonderwhyibother · 15/08/2025 15:49

Pick up for my two dogs every time without fail. Part and parcel of being a responsible owner, always got a pocket full of bags and tissues (to clean up my one dog as he likes to wedge his arse in the hedge) and just get on with it without a second thought. Ive even gone back to wash and clean the pavement with a bucket of water, cleaner and a broom before when my dog unexpectedly passed liquid. I was mortified having to walk off but it was impossible to try scrape it up. I wouldn't pick up another dogs poo though as have no idea how they've been fed or kept.

Zempy · 15/08/2025 15:49

Do you have children OP? It’s the same principle really.

I absolutely wouldn’t want to change another shitty nappy for a child that wasn’t mine. I wouldn’t pick up dog poo that wasn’t from my dog.

When it’s your own baby/fur baby it becomes manageable.

Pricelessadvice · 15/08/2025 15:49

And the hole in the dog poo bag and poo on the hands is a rite of passage that we ALL go through 🤣

Alexandra2001 · 15/08/2025 15:50

Moved to Real Meat diet, the minging poo's have stopped as have the really bad farts.
Nice dry ones, easy to pick up, her coat has improved too.

@Zempy I have occasionally, i'm lucky enough to go to a really beautiful place to walk my dog, not too many people go to, its stunning but despite not being popular, poo bags and shit left.
Deliberately, like on a large stone or tied to a gate.... left for days... i don't want too but its no good just complaining is it?

Pleasedontdothat · 15/08/2025 15:50

What is it with all the dog-hating threads on here at the moment? I suspect the vast majority of dog owners on MN are responsible and pick up their dog’s poo. Having dealt with baby poo, child poo (one of mine had a chronic constipation problem associated with autism), my elderly father’s poo, cat poo, dog poo, horse poo .. it’s all just poo - every creature poos - get over it. And where we used to live in south London, the biggest problem was constantly finding human poo in the bushes - much, much worse than dealing with a dog poo

Ah, yes. It is worth spending a bit more on decent poos bags. But we have all been there 😅

NVER BUY CHEAP THIN BAGS! 🙈😨

especially if you have long nails.

walking with a friend who buys thin bags. She also has long nails. Guess what happened....

she was very grateful for the little alcohol wipe I keep in my dog walking bag 🤣
