I was in a museum today and my daughter (15) left me to go to the loo. She then waved me over.. she said to me.. I’d rather not use the gender neutral loo. I said that’s fine and sent her down a level to the ladies. A woman the approached me and preceded to tell me off for not encouraging my daughter to use the GN loo. How she has a trans child and how are they ever going to feel accepted with people like me around. I’m ND and I always second guess myself 10000 times a day. I wasn’t in the wrong was I?? I just said ok go and use the other separate loo. Surely my child can pee wherever she feels comfortable??!! I hate conflict so I just said ok and walked off!

People are “losing their shit” over the ruling because it’s creating a load of problems for trans people, and gender non conforming people more broadly. Mostly because it’s been weaponised by a certain faction of society in ways that it was not intended; precisely what the Supreme Court very naively asserted should not be done.

No the SC ruling is a matter of civil law- it’s about the obligations on service providers r.e. Equality / non discrimination . It has nothing to do with the criminal law or the police . Theres no law that prevents a trans woman from using a women’s toilet, that can be enforced by the police.

The role of the SC was to interpret the legal meaning of a specific act of parliament - the EA 2010. And the meaning of certain words in the context of that act for understanding provisions related to the protected characteristics of sex and gender reassignment. Nothing more than that.

No the court is not there to decide matter of biology and medicine. You need people with science and medical degrees to do that.
