Does anyone else find this imagery completely inappropriate in this day and age, or am I a prude as my husband so kindly put it? It unnecessarily objectifies women and I thought we’d moved on from this sort of thing.

It's a safety ad to remind people to stay in their seats while the bus is moving, and they've illustrated the point with a picture of some feet in shoes that would be quite impractical for walking along in a moving bus.

FreezeDriedStrawberries · 13/08/2025 22:53

A pair of women's legs?!
Has anyone alerted the church elders?!
I'm shocked. SHOCKED.
😁

It's not very representative of women (who uses buses) these days, so it feels it's there to draw attention, but in the process objectifies women, because it's not just any pair of legs.

"Not just any pair of legs.."
Ha, sounds like something M and S would say.
Maybe that could be their next advert for tights.
"It's not just any pair of legs. It's an M and S pair of legs." 😂

JulieBindelRocks · 13/08/2025 23:18

It’s pretty dated, I work general public adjacent, and I see a woman in high heels about once a week.

There would be no women in heels on the buses where I live... cos most people here are using walking frames/sticks or have ankle tags.
A woman in heels would be using a cab.

Flomingho · 14/08/2025 01:27

Can't see a problem with it. Just think it is an old advert.

SmallChanges3 · 13/08/2025 22:32

On a superficial level, it's a shit, mediocre advertisement.

On a deeper level, I can read it as the advertiser telling a woman her place, that she is to to stay seated. It leans into the dichotomy of men being protectors and women needing help. The fact she's wearing stilleto heels, and is crossing her legs is suggestive; that men are dominant and women are something to be controlled and objectified.

But maybe that's just the English grad in me.

Is that how you go around in daily life viewing things. Must be very depressing.

LillyPJ · 13/08/2025 22:46

Not at all. I don't like wearing trousers much and I generally wear skirts above my knees. And I'm not 'worked up' about a woman wearing whatever she likes. I just question why women would choose to wear something so impractical. Shoes without heels can also be smart..

Well I cant talk for all women who choose to wear heels but for me I liked how they looked, liked that they made me taller and liked how they made my calf muscles look more defined.

@XenoBitch same!
Zimmers, sticks and mobility scooters all round! In fact, our buses need a public health information poster, about the dangers of the damm things
( mobility scooters !)

No. I'm quite superficial.

Of course you are, as if there is nothing inbetween.

I think using and objectifying women to sell stuff is the very definition of sexism. Don’t get me started on why it absolutely HAD TO BE a pair of high heels and a mini skirt to make the point.

What is the poster selling? It’s a warning poster about not getting out of your seat before the bus stops…

JackGrealishsBobbySocks · 14/08/2025 16:36

We would get such a bollocking from one of our local bus drivers if we weren't at least halfway down the aisle by the time he opens the doors. "I GET FINANCIAL PENALTIES IF I DON'T COMPLETE THE ROUTE ON TIME BECAUSE OF MORONS LIKE YOU." 😁

Answered this already to someone else being deliberately obtuse. It’s selling a safety message. You know what I mean and my point still stands.

It's 'selling' (in other words, promoting) safety. It didn't need to be these legs in this pose and those clothes but for some (sexist?) reason, they chose that image. Considering that it's presumably a young, fit and able-bodied woman, would another image have been more appropriate?

Maybe you should tell his employers?

I think it's pretty obvious that the safest thing to do nowadays is just use stick figures to indicate something, then no one or no groups of people can be offended as the legs wont belong to a male or female, young or old.

But they’re not selling anything, it’s a warning not to stand up until the train stops

Why is that? I think it’s reasonable advice. Imagine standing in these heels in a moving vehicle—seeing women struggle to walk in them, sometimes even falling over on flat surfaces. Now, picture trying to balance in them in a wobbly vehicle.

Darlingx · 14/08/2025 18:05

Its the thought regarding aging and that a face this young needs injecting 😪

MyPeppyTurtle · 14/08/2025 18:07

What would you prefer, a tracksuit and trainers or someone actually caring about their image??

nevernotmaybe · 14/08/2025 18:12

Kerry71 · 13/08/2025 18:49

My mood probably isn’t helped by the fact that when I posted this on my towns Facebook group asking what on earth the bus company were thinking with this, the replies were mainly from men. One charmer replied ‘they are probably thinking cracking legs, I wonder what her t**ts look like’ 🙄

Men replied? How dare they. Who gave them computer access and let them out of their cage?!

And unfortunately of you say something silly, people are going to not only mock it with hyperbole but those who want to rile you up will know exactly what to target to do so. So of course you also got that kind of comment.
