Does anyone else find this imagery completely inappropriate in this day and age, or am I a prude as my husband so kindly put it? It unnecessarily objectifies women and I thought we’d moved on from this sort of thing.

I puzzle over this too. In my mind, it's akin to the old Chinese practice of foot binding - something designed to hamper women's ability to walk, let alone run, in an attempt to appear more alluring to men.

I often think it is so we can’t run away too.
A rapist’s dream.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 13/08/2025 20:33

I think if you are sexualising a woman's calves then you might just be part of the problem

CatEyeHoodWinkle · 13/08/2025 20:33

I’d put money on those being a man’s legs!

Waitingfordoggo · 13/08/2025 20:35

I don’t really find it offensive but it’s exceptionally old-fashioned. What a weird marketing decision.

Anchorage56 · 13/08/2025 20:26

So your definition of mini skirt is any skirt that rises above the knee when sat down?

I think it's obvious we aren't going to agree and I'm not interested in convincing you of my opinion so I'll leave it here.

Well, it is a whole lot better and more artistique than some of the stuff we get shoved in our faces nowadays!

In what way is it 'artistique'?

YourUglySister · 13/08/2025 20:40

It’s old fashioned now. Nobody wears shoes like that anymore.

DiscoBob · 13/08/2025 20:40

Dangermoo · 13/08/2025 18:24

It's like a throw back to the 80s. Of course women, wearing stilettos are far more susceptible to falling over, on a bus. Patronising and yes, sexual objectification. I agree with you, OP.

Yeah it does look aggressively 80s. Even the style of shoe and skirt. I'm guessing the art director at the agency is either crap or about 78 years old.

XenoBitch · 13/08/2025 20:41

This thread 🙄

It is legs. To be fair, if it had to be a pair of legs that most represented the area the bus is in, where I live it would be joggers, trainers, walking frame and an ankle tag.

Why are women encouraged (through marketing and advertising) to wear stuff that shows off and exaggerates parts of their bodies? Think sheer tights, short skirts, high heels... There's no practical reason. It's a sexualised image. If you can't see that, you are part of the problem.

Um, some women like to wear those things?

I sometimes despair a little at some of the stuff people choose to wear but I cant get worked up about a woman wearing a skirt that shows mainly the lower half of her legs and a smart pair of heels. Are you only happy if women wear trousers or long skirts and only flat shoes?

VioletandDill · 13/08/2025 20:48

Most of the time I wear boots and cargo shorts. Sometimes I wear very high heels with very short skirts. Sometimes when I do that I get the bus, and yes I should wait til the bus is stopped to get up, or I might end up on my arse! That woman (or otherwise!) is a lot more demure than me at a club!

Is the solution to the problems that come with sexualisation of women really to pretend that women who wear heels and skirts don't exist?! To erase them from every image? That thought makes me much more uncomfortable than an advert with a pair of legs!

My message would be 'women can dress how they like, we should see a diverse representation of women in the media, and no matter how they dress, sexual assault and harassment is not okay', not 'don't show women's bodies because it's inappropriate'.

I just thought professional commuter . Didn’t assume there was a short skirt. Think it’s a stereotype of a powerful business
women . Not offensive at all

The style of the skirt we can't see....

You are assuming it’s a pair of woman’s legs! For all you know they might belong to Eddie Izzard or Grayson Perry!

Friend of my uncles was eyeing up who he thought was a woman leg's in a short skirt. So he turned his car around so he could see him/her from the front and realised they were a trans.😂😂😂

It's a picture of an unidentified person's calves and knee and shoes (who could be male, as pointed out)

The skirt could be longer and rode up, could be the saggiest pair of shorts, most sack like dress...

I wouldn't even say they were wearing tights

There's nothing sexualised here

Ratafia · 13/08/2025 20:58

SoScarletItWas · 13/08/2025 18:10

I think using and objectifying women to sell stuff is the very definition of sexism. Don’t get me started on why it absolutely HAD TO BE a pair of high heels and a mini skirt to make the point.

edit for typo

They're not selling anything?

'A trans'. Like 'a homeless' on Brass Eye. I despair.

I dont think so, i think its fine tbh, its just a pair of legs

It does look like an old advert though, like maybe its been there a while

Since the 1980s?

PolyVagalNerve · 13/08/2025 21:05

It reminds me of :

You get more leg room in an Allegra

WiddlinDiddlin · 13/08/2025 21:05

It is an information poster - the point is to get people to look at it.

A pair of legs in tracky bottoms or suit trousers or jeans is not going to get people looking at it.

A nice shapely pair of legs in high heels, is.

If you've an issue with that, I really don't know what to tell you - billions of women around the world go to work with their lower halves dressed exactly like that. If it is disgusting to you, thats a 'you' problem.

If you're annoyed or upset that people will be more inclined to look at a nice pair of ladies legs... thats human nature, what do you suggest is the solution?

Lovelife85 · 13/08/2025 21:08

You must be a right bundle of laughs..

it’s a pair of legs, get over it.Hardly something to be disgusted by.Its not like it’s an arse hanging out!
