That's just meaningless pub talk.

Edited

Why?

GleisZwei · 14/08/2025 08:04

I'm surprised it survived so long tbh.

FenderStrat · 14/08/2025 08:07

PeonyPatch · 14/08/2025 08:02

Why?

How much would the redevelopment cost?
Who would pay?
What would the ongoing costs be?
Who would pay??

BondAway25 · 13/08/2025 19:01

Ok

so what 2000+ jobs are you creating for these staff losing theirs?

virtue posting helps no one.

She will probably complain about the rising number on UC though.

I'm with @BondAway25 - I've seen this kind of shoddy development planning in action in my corner of London. It can and does happen. If you are genuinely interested a bit of googling will get you all the info you want or need.

I am genuinely interested.
Can you give me the name of the development I need to start looking into. Thank you.

palepinkhighlighter · 14/08/2025 08:18

My DD will be very sad to see it go as she loves a browse in there. We have never paid anywhere near full price for items though; she’d see things she liked and I would place a click and collect online while in the shop, as the prices were usually at least half the price - and more with voucher codes - plus they’d send regular money off loyalty vouchers every time you placed an order! Orders would be available to pick up within an hour or so. Orders delivered for home delivery were more hit and miss though, with them often not sending items out reliably.

I had my second ear piercing done at Claire’s, had no trouble with my ears at all.

Both my DDs had their first and second piercings done there too. They haven’t had any trouble with their ears either, and it’s been 24 years for DD1, and 22 for DD2.

They’re 34 and 32 now.

my daughter had her piercings done at Claire’s a few weeks ago and had a great experience. We hadn’t planned to do it, but needed up having them done on a whim. The lady there really knew what she was doing and we were pleasantly surprised after hearing so much bad press about it. I ended up having one done as well! Zero issues whatsoever. Not sure what can honestly go wrong but maybe we just had a very knowledgable person. She wasn’t a teenager to be fair and had lots of piercings herself.

No one on MN cares about the many women who will lose their jobs. More important that their precious kids stop asking for 'tat'

Yeah maybe we should all encourage our kids to keep being ripped off because of the workers. Maybe direct your sanctimonious tones towards those whose fault it all is, ie the directors/ owners? Not parents who have basically been propping them up for years!

PeonyPatch · 14/08/2025 09:04

Tbh, Claire’s sells tat. But that’s not really the point is it? Our high streets are in super decline. I used to love popping in with my mum as a child, or with friends. Fond memories. A part of growing up.

Netcurtainnelly · 14/08/2025 10:44

TizerorFizz · 13/08/2025 15:52

I don’t think Claire’s were universally poor. They had decent enough things if you looked. There’s quite a good selection of Tat sold elsewhere. River Island might be in trouble too. We need to convert high streets to leisure areas and recreational spaces. Too many shops will be empty.

Yes that will.be the future of shopping. It will change.

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2025 10:56

Claire’s did actually source from quite a few countries. I knew someone who supplied them from India. It’s all very well to say it’s tat but it’s not 100% awful. Yes, anyone losing their job isn’t good news.

We need councils and planning authorities to get on with redefining what a town centre should look like and what it needs to contain and change the use of shops to residential. Even John Lewis wanted to convert 8 of their shops to resi. Not sure if they have been allowed to but everything is soooo sloooow!

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/08/2025 10:57

About time. Nobody needs that plastic crap.

Do you apply that to "real" jewellery too?
(ie actual gold/silver etc)
No one needs any jewellery. We like it because it's pretty.

Yes. Engagement/Wedding ring only. Have never really liked jewellery.

At least they’re natural materials and can be melted down/re-used, passed on.

It’s the waste of resources that I care about. Most of that stuff ends up in landfill.

Agreed. What the hell has happened to town’s planning authorities? We have countless McDonalds in close proximity where I live, and bloody Costa Coffee. Whoever is approving clearly doesn’t care for the health of its residents and just wants £

This says a lot about Mumsnet. People sprout all sorts of bollocks then get offended asked to prove their accusations.

No it says a lot about you, accusing people of lying because they don't want to do the groundwork for you.

I don't have to prove anything to you, I'm not lying, I'm living it, I don't give a damn if you, Random Internet Person, believes me it not 🙅🏻‍♀️

The only staff I’ve seen in Claire’s recently are bored looking late- teenage girls snapping gum and shrugging insouciantly at any questions tentatively thrown their way.

So because they’re teenage girls they deserve to lose their jobs?

How was that 'your point' when it wasn't what you said?

Majority of couples work full time. Online shopping is VERY convenient for bulk ordering and saves hassle taking kids out to run some errands. Plus, parking costs and then petrol. There has been a rise in parking fines too.
What sane parents want to spend their weekends running errands and grocery shopping when I can have it delivered on a weekday? Which means I can save my weekends taking kids out and spending quality time with them

What do you expect me to do - spend my salary funding the high street and not on my kids? I want convenience, so what?

Same - the high street just isn’t a fun place to go like it used to be. Parking is expensive, the shops are all messy and the changing rooms are ALWAYS dirty with literal balls of dust and hair on the floor in the corners. Unruly screaming kids everywhere - I watched a 5 year old scream blue murder in a shopping centre the other day for a solid 10 minutes over a rucksack display that her mum refused to buy. What’s the appeal? I’d rather shop online and try on at home.

No I just don't understand stand why you said 'that was my point' when it wasn't. Your point was about your convenience, not about what you said was your point.

I can't be arsed going back through your posts to pastes them again.

I literally do not care. You need to get a grip and stop being so angry at people like me who don’t have a control of what happens on the high street. Iceland are offering £1 to customers who point out shoplifters. That’s how out of touch they are. If they go down, I don’t care.

Exactly! Plus you get free returns at majority of places, some places have stopped this. My idea of fun isn’t this. I’d rather take the kids out to explore the countryside and see views. Take packed lunch and have ice cream bought as a treat.

bellamorgan · 14/08/2025 14:14

Yes who wants to go into town to shop. It’s filthy, beggars, mugging, dirty changing rooms when they even exist, swearing teens, weed smell and screaming toddlers.

Not a nice experience.

Our city centre smells like genuinely it has a smell. I only go if I have to go inside the bank.

I’m tired of god damn chuggars and beggars, I barely have any money for myself and family. Even if I did, I wouldn’t give it to them. So annoying.
