I loved it as a kid and my DD loves it now but they are terribly overpriced and their piercing station is awful.

OonaStubbs · 14/08/2025 06:32

Hopefully high streets will start selling things worth buying so that people want to go there and shop.

purplespink · 14/08/2025 06:33

Exactly @Theonewhogotthecake, the same thing would be £2 or less in Home Bargains.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 14/08/2025 06:34

the high street, and for youngsters, shopping together, is a community and a social experience and when there’s nothing but empty buildings, it will be too late.

I am sad for the loss of jobs and no one wants empty buildings, but I would like teens/tweens doing something other than shopping as a “community and social experience”. I am very sad about the loss of so-called third spaces for that reason, but a store selling overpriced stuff and marketing itself quite cynically to a group which can’t really assess value for money? I think it’s fine to go.

I used to love Claire's when I was younger (25 years ago ish) and would plan trips to town just so I could grab some new bobbles and a mystery bag or two.

It doesn't surprise me that they're not as popular now, as I think young people today have a taste for designer things thanks to influencers - and Claire's aren't as cheap as they used to be.. quite the opposite in fact!

My daughter and her friends love it. It's very popular with that age group. Unfortunately it's very expensive so it's look and not buy but hope. The sale is amazing there. Very sad about the staff as they always very nice.

The BBC reporting that 2150 jobs are at risk - for anybody who cares.

i am sorry for the staff

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 14/08/2025 05:56

Yeah... questioning anyone's use of the word 'loss' in relation to their products.

Although of course I'm genuinely sorry for those losing jobs.

Not 'the product' the experience for children. The experience of saving up pocket money or spending birthday money in a real shop, not online. The way the shop appeals to children.

purpleme12 · 14/08/2025 06:37

Oh you've got to be kidding me
I shop there loads
Get pretty much all my earrings from there
And hair accessories
Really don't want them to close down!!

Sad for the high street 🙁

I used to go to Claire’s as a little girl.

I am sad for the death of the high street and the community it can bring.

Yep. Well sleep walk into them all being turned into flats!

my nearest town is turning another section of the high street into flats. Sneakily through the back door.

Similar story here. I agree with the PP who suggested making the high street a recreational area. This would be great for mental health, and a sense of community and also support high street shops. It’s a way of life that’s being lost that I’m most sad about. I hate how everything has gone digital 😕

No one has said it's the only thing their tweens/teens do! But it is one thing they enjoy doing, it can be a good way for them to get some independence - it's not about 1 chain of shops, it's about the death of town centre, the high street. Many are already derelict & not places you'd now allow your tweens to wander around alone (while you sit nearby with a coffee)

.

autienotnaughty · 14/08/2025 06:45

It’s cheap tat that you can buy cheaper online. They need to lower prices or improve quality and have a bigger easily accessible online presence to survive.

In what way was it sneakily through the back door?

What exactly are you envisaging as a 'recreational area' though?

Green space, parks, benches, coffee shops, healthier food outlets interwoven into high street area with shops

GeminiGiggles · 14/08/2025 06:55

Gonna go against the grain and say I'll be sad to see it go. I agree with the plastic and price comments but the number of times I've been able to buy emergency piercing jewellery when I've lost some on holiday made them worth it to me 🤣

FenderStrat · 14/08/2025 06:46

Far too much to explain on here. But basically they didn't consult as they should have, or make it known their plans would involve making 2 floors of the main town carpark (next door) private parking for the flats. It's not like the car park is half empty either.

Can you give proof of this.

Say 'tat' ONE MORE TIME

I hate that word.
It's another word that Mumsnetters throw around without agreeing what the word actually means.
The jewellery Clare's sells - didn't that used to be called Costume Jewellery?

PeonyPatch · 14/08/2025 06:49

They did that to one town near here, but it didn't work as we have parks & green spaces if that's what we are going out for,

it looked lovely at first, but when all the shops are closing there's just no incentive to go there and what was once a vibrant, busy little town for decades isn't anymore.

What?

Why shoukd i? I don't care if you believe me or not. I'm not spending time looking up documents to link to, for some random on the internet. I have no need to prove myself to you or give you my real name or location.

FenderStrat · 14/08/2025 07:44

This says a lot about Mumsnet. People sprout all sorts of bollocks then get offended asked to prove their accusations.

Why not just go into a piercing shop and get replacements? There’s always loads of tattoo and piercing places.

I'm with @BondAway25 - I've seen this kind of shoddy development planning in action in my corner of London. It can and does happen. If you are genuinely interested a bit of googling will get you all the info you want or need.
