Smoking in a queue / at a bus stop

I appreciate there aren't many places where you can have a cigarette indoors these days, but when people are queueing and can't get away - not without losing their place, anyway - it's really inconsiderate of people to smoke.

(Ideally I'd like phone conversations on loud speaker to be banned as well, but I'm probably expecting too much.)

AIBU to think this is highly antisocial?

As a smoker ( who constantly wants and fails to quit) I completely agree with you. Second hand smoke can literally kill you.

Anewuser · 13/08/2025 14:26

Smoking is banned in some queues. For instance, Merlin have banned smoking in all queues at Thorpe Park, Madame Tassauds etc.

I think most people would at least consider it rude.

niadainud · 13/08/2025 14:37

Interesting that currently 20% of people think I'm being unreasonable. I'd be interested to hear on what grounds they think that.

I think you're right, it is antisocial, and I'm not a smoker basher. I don't smoke and I've always disliked being surrounded by cigarette fumes.

That's interesting to know.

YANBU at all OP and I say that as an ex smoker .
I never smoked in queues, be that a bus stop, theme park, shop sales queue and never liked standing near somebody who did smoke in a queue.
It is antisocial and self centred.

Because the only grounds are “I’m a selfish twat and think I am entitled to smoke in a queue because why on earth should I go more than 5 minutes without smoking?”

If you’re in a queue and you absolutely, desperately need to have a cig then you should leave the queue to go and get your fix where you’re not inflicting it on other people.

Those who don’t are selfish arses.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 13/08/2025 17:43

Yes, it's so rude. I hate it when I'm with my young kids and they're forced to breathe smoke.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 13/08/2025 17:45

*The only thing worse are the idiots who smoke spliffs on the benches at our local playground. I have to walk up and ask them to move, and they act like I've really put them out.

StarDolphins · 13/08/2025 17:51

I don’t think you’re BU and it is inconsiderate & selfish. I don’t smoke & I dislike being anywhere near smokers or smoke.

I don’t think it should be banned outdoors though.

Vgbeat · 13/08/2025 17:56

I never smoke ina queue, I always step away to some where more considerate and rejoin hubby later. I always used smoking areas if provided.

MamaElephantMama · 13/08/2025 18:02

While we were in a 40 minute queue at a tourist attraction last week the women in front of us was smoking a vape none stop. I think I would have preferred it to have been one cigarette than a constant smell.

Serpentstooth · 13/08/2025 18:10

I happily smoked cigarettes for many years, gave up years ago but still get a bit of craving if someone's smoking nearby. So I wish they wouldn't. Oddly, I can't bear the sight of anyone vaping, nothing could induce me to try it and the thought of doing so makes me feel sick.

ProudCat · 13/08/2025 18:29

Hmmmm. It's an interesting one. Is it about health implications and smell?

I'm in my late 50s. As someone who doesn't travel internationally and hasn't ever really owned a car due to concerns around climate change and health, I do find it annoying when other people do things that damage both the planet and myself.

mamagogo1 · 13/08/2025 18:34

What is really annoying me are the people who think it’s fine to smoke cannabis in motorway heavy traffic - literally dozens on Sunday (I know because we were filtering on the motorbike, from the back of the bike I can see right into cars so it wasn’t just my nose telling me!)

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/08/2025 18:38

I hate it too, OP. There's a woman who chain smokes at a bus stop I use, she sits comfortably on the seats puffing away, and everyone else waiting for the bus is standing upwind from her.

TheTecknician · 13/08/2025 18:38

I came across one of these people in a queue for the CAB many years ago. It was a long wait in the queue and at intervals of less than ten minutes, this silly woman would go outside for a cigarette and ask the person in front of her to keep her place in the queue. She must have done this at least four times. I was amused and baffled by her almost constant need for a smoke and her brass neck with the place-keeping requests.

LlynTegid · 13/08/2025 18:40

If it is tobacco then it is Ok, if it is a person who is happy to support a trade which led to an 8 year old being murdered in Liverpool, then not.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 13/08/2025 18:45

Cigarettes are horrible and its rude to smoke around other people without prior agreement.

Vapes are even worse as there seems to be more of them and people just dont seem to care and think its harmless.

Weed, vile, criminal and totally unforgivable. I look at anyone smoking weed as lacking in morals, happy to support child slavery and sex trafficking.

Yes, both the fact that I find the smell very unpleasant and that I know breathing it in isn't doing me any good.

The comments have been unanimous, but the pole is now showing that 27% of people think I'm being unreasonable. That's a lot of selfish smokers (I'm assuming) out there.

OP posts:
NippyNinjaCrab · 13/08/2025 20:24

I agree with you, it's the most disgusting vile smell and if you want to smoke go ahead, just do it in your own home.

Tutorpuzzle · 13/08/2025 20:32

Weed and vaping smells, no, abhorrent (and illegal, for one of them.)

I quite like the smell of normal fags so it doesn’t bother me, I’m just astonished anyone can still afford to smoke.

NoSoupForU · 13/08/2025 20:33

Its fucking disgusting. I don't care if people smoke but it is unbelievably selfish to inflict it upon other people. Same for vape shit too.

OSTMusTisNT · 13/08/2025 20:41

I was standing in the 'queue' after a funeral waiting my turn to shake hands etc and the bloke in front of me was smoking. Must be one of the chaviest things I've ever seen, lighting up a fag between the crematorium door and where the family were standing a few meters into the garden area.

niadainud · 13/08/2025 20:59

I think it's also pretty selfish to smoke when dining outside when other people are eating.
