Smoking in a queue / at a bus stop

niadainud · 13/08/2025 14:17

I appreciate there aren't many places where you can have a cigarette indoors these days, but when people are queueing and can't get away - not without losing their place, anyway - it's really inconsiderate of people to smoke.

(Ideally I'd like phone conversations on loud speaker to be banned as well, but I'm probably expecting too much.)

AIBU to think this is highly antisocial?

It’s rare now though isn’t it? Smoking is very antisocial these days.

i get annoyed if im walking behind someone smoking. I have to overtake them

Mumnewname · 14/08/2025 07:46

In London at least (probably elsewhere too) smoking is banned at all bus stops and train stations (including open air train stations).

Not everyone knows this, and not everyone complies.

What I think is more shocking is that, at all hospitals I've been to, smoking is banned in the grounds. But it's never enforced and I think it's really sad to see very ill people in their hospital gowns smoking. I understand it, why would you quit then and there when you've just been admitted. But still it's sad

Cigarettes are horrible and its rude to smoke around other people without prior agreement.

Vapes are even worse as there seems to be more of them and people just dont seem to care and think its harmless.

Weed, vile, criminal and totally unforgivable. I look at anyone smoking weed as lacking in morals, happy to support child slavery and sex trafficking.

Edited

I don't see what smoking weed has to do with morals. (I'm not a smoker of anything by the way.)

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's rare. There's normally someone smoking a cigarette on my route to the tube, and quite a few people vaping.

Yes, I also do that.

Really??

Goodness, how naive must you be to not recognise the connection between smoking an illegal drug and funding the drugs trade and where morality lies when the cannabis trade involves child slavery and sexual exploitation.

I would suggest you go and do some reading on the issue.

Whammyyammy · 14/08/2025 18:28

I agree. It stinks.

Whammyyammy · 14/08/2025 18:30

I remember our local macdonalds would permit smoking upstairs, which was where the children's play area, ball pool and children's seating were situated.
The 80s was a good but odd time

R0ckandHardPlace · 14/08/2025 18:34

I smoke but I would never smoke in a queue, or in a pub beer garden/outside eating area, or anywhere there are other people. I’ll take myself off somewhere and then return.

Scottishdreams1991 · 13/08/2025 14:24

As a smoker ( who constantly wants and fails to quit) I completely agree with you. Second hand smoke can literally kill you.

Me too. I step out of a queue if I am with someone, or hang on as much as I can

lizzyBennet08 · 14/08/2025 18:40

Of course it's an incredibly ignorant thing to do to people around you. Thankfully smokers are reducing in numbers so it's not as bad as it used to me.

Coatsoff42 · 14/08/2025 18:42

It is selfish, but when I was growing up if someone lit a cigarette in a bus queue or at a train station, for sure the bus or train would turn up right then and they would be annoyed. So now I associate it with making the bus turn up quicker!

SweetHydrangea · 14/08/2025 18:42

I hate it, but I have to say I hate the smell of vaping even more. I think the majority of smokers are considerate and understand it stinks and other people don’t want to breath their second hand smoke in, so smoking doesn’t impact me very much at all on a daily basis to be honest.

With vapers I think the majority don’t give a crap about anyone and will just do it constantly wherever they are with no consideration for anyone else, and it really pisses me off when they do it surrounded by kids like at the zoo or play park.

Arlanymor · 14/08/2025 18:45

Selfish and antisocial. I don't like loudspeakers on mobiles either - I only use my phone like that in the comfort of my own home and to have my hands free to get on with stuff like making dinner. No one else except for the person I am talking to needs to be subjected to my conversation!

Hmmmm. It's an interesting one. Is it about health implications and smell?

I'm in my late 50s. As someone who doesn't travel internationally and hasn't ever really owned a car due to concerns around climate change and health, I do find it annoying when other people do things that damage both the planet and myself.

Hmmmm. It's an interesting one. Is it about health implications and smell?

Well let's have a think about that...🤔

No, I think OP isn't keen on the sight of smoke.

I used to use this technique! Even on the tube, can you believe?

Worked like a charm 😁

I don't smoke now.

You could say the same about cheap clothing etc. The person who smokes weed or buys cheap clothes is not necessarily lacking in morals. If you look hard enough, you can find many businesses with shady sides - it can be hard to avoid them. And there was no need for you to be so patronizing.

If I go to the toilet during a rugby match there is ALWAYS a score while I am away - sadly I've not yet mastered the power of ensuring that it's MY team that score!!

Mistyglade · 14/08/2025 19:52

I’m not there to police people on their own civil liberties, I don’t like the smell so I stand down stream of the waft.

Cheap clothing sure, but last time I checked it wasn't illegal to buy.

Weed smokers are not only criminals, engaging in a criminal activity of purchasing illicit drugs but are propping up child abuse.

Seriously, you need to educate yourself more.

Seriously, so do you. Smoking weed is not immoral. Whether it's illegal or not is neither here nor there.

Of course its "here and there" its ILLEGAL!

Literally, the cause of child abuse and sexual exploitation. Have you heard about county lines?.

Anyone with an ounce of decency and morality would not want to be complicit in these kinds of abuses.

It's obvious though that whilst people hold your kind of opinion on moral lines, the situation will never change and our children and vulnerable adults will still be at risk.

I work (as does my husband) in a field where we see the results of drugs, county lines and child abuse. It's devastating. I had a case where a gang gained entry to a family home and assaulted her mum and primary school age daughter because her elder son (secondary school age) owed money for cannabis and was avoiding paying. I had to relocate them, mum lost her job, kids had to leave their school and friends.

You are frighteningly naive..

No, I'm not. All the things you've said are appalling and shouldn't happen. Much of it is immoral. Child abuse is immoral.Exploiting others is immoral, Sexual abuse is immoral.

Livpool · 14/08/2025 21:10

I agree - it’s vile
