Admittedly I’m in the (lovely)) south east and we are blessed with pretty decent summers generally but so far this summer has been amazing!

9am, and I’m out in the garden, having my coffee and planning trip to beach with my teens for the day. And the sunny warm weather stretches in to the future forecast for days.

South Wales here. The early summer was lovely, but since the start of the school hols it hasn’t been great. Quite a lot of rain, or at least drizzly days. This week has been better, although yesterday was really overcast again.

Can the posters here say if they’ve had any rain during this summer?

We're in the West of England and have had 2 or 3 days with rain all summer. Maybe one of those it was really quite wet. And there was a thunder storm and rain the other night.

We had a week in Skye and the Hebrides a couple of weeks ago. On two days the mist was right down and it drizzled all day. When we went over to Lewis I knew we'd just driven through some amazing scenery but couldn't really see it properly.

We're in the NE and its roasting today but in general it's been a pretty average summer with maybe a bit less rain than usual.

Mind you our area has a microclimate which is often completely different from friends 20 miles away.😁

Consett by any chance? 😁

Bet they flew there too

Nope.

I was going to say Tow Law 😄 But the extent isn't 20 miles!

ApplesinmyPocket · 14/08/2025 08:54

I don't like temperatures over 25 (unless I'm on holiday in Portugal with a 10 minute walk to the sea and a swimming pool in the garden) but what makes me anxious and uncomfortable is to see the fields and crops so brown. I met a farmer the other day who says they're worried about feeding their cows through winter, as there isn't enough hay and other crops being produced this year, far too little rain.

Our rescue horses are trying to scrub up a bit of grass over what essentially looks like a desert, so yes we're having to feed hay at a time of year there should be plenty of grass, and the price of hay has of course shot up due to tiny yields.

But I'm genuinely pleased there are people and families making the most of the weather! I just wish it could rain overnight, every night :)

MotherofPearl · 14/08/2025 07:42

Nope.

But you presumably flew to NYC, Rome and the Alps?

Genuine question @MotherofPearl
you say your family lovely hot weather
When they proclaim this, do you respond with what you did on this thread?

Loving it. Took the entire summer holidays off and feel like I live abroad.

Meaningless without any information. For all we know they’re taking a siesta

I do think it's important to recognise, that while not sitting in your garden with a coffee enjoying the sunshine won't actually achieve anything, the temperatures we've seen do cause as much disruption as what we term as bad weather, rain fall leading to floods, high winds causing damage, snow causing travel chaos.

The moorland fire near me has been declared a major incident, covering 5km squared now and with 20 appliances attending (other service areas are needing to lend support) don't suppose it's much fun fighting that in temperatures of 26°+ as a fire fighter. We've had smoke blow in and we're 25 miles away, but it's been reported further away too. The Moor and woods in that area are extremely dry due to the lack of rainfall and although rumoured to be caused by an idiot with a BBQ, they can happen spontaneously in really hot weather.

There's also been a couple more local and smaller wild fires and at least 3 rescues by the Coastguard and RNLI of people in trouble swimming or using inflatables off the local beaches.

I don't think people should be berated for enjoying the hot weather, no more than people going sledging or building a snowman when it snows, but I do think it's important to recognise that it's not all fabulous and does have it's down sides, and I don't think people should be berated for that either.

You’d have had to have had your head in the sand for the last decade or so if you didn’t “recognise” this.

However does every thread about the weather HAVE to always include “yes I am worried and concerned about what this means in terms of the climate”?

Well I guess that's the risk you take when you post on a public forum, that's about discussion, not everyone who reads it is going to agree with your point of view and going to offer theirs, and some are going to do so reasonably and in a balanced way and some are going to be derogatory, that's people.

Being concerned about the wildfires didn't stop me drying 5 loads of washing yesterday (well 4.5 until the smoke blew in!) and not doing so wouldn't have changed anything, but I'm capable of appreciating the nice weather at the same time as being concerned about the wider effects it's having.

Yes but posters telling people to recognise this and saying they find it “celebratory” … well it’s just so unnecessary. We all know about climate change. And many of us very worried. But doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the nice summer

Not quite. We're on the edge of the Northumberland National Park a bit more to the north

Our Morrisons deliveries do come from Consett though.😀

I haven't said people can't enjoy it, in fact I said the opposite!

Or told anyone they need to recognise it - I've said I think it's important to recognise it, and I do think that, but I'm not insisting everyone should or dictating when.

I responded to that post because it's something that's happening close to me now, you said the picture was pointless without context, I commented with what could be some context, because that's what I'm seeing locally. Fire fighters fighting wild fires in hot weather and it doesn't take a genius to work out that's probably not a very comfortable situation.

There's been some OTT posts in both directions as there are in any thread, but you're doing the same thing now by insisting that others shouldn't have their viewpoint or keep it to themselves because you don't agree with it. It doesn't need to be on every post, but then you didn't need to post in the first place.

It's a forum where people discuss things, and weather and climate change are somewhat linked! Unfortunately you don't get to dictate that only people who agree with you get to respond.

I can confirm that i “recognise” climate change and “recognise” the impact it is having on our planet

I love how we all live in such quaint, pretty little hamlets!
I wonder if the ordinary people use reddit instead?

I can't say I've enjoyed the summer really, far too muggy and humid. However, I am only 6 stone and 5"7, so don't tend to sweat very much, thankfully. Appreciate that I am jolly lucky!

Might re-thatch my roof tomorrow, who knows, it's difficult sometimes trying to invent new things to do in my sweet little enclave of affluence and serendipity.

I do worry about the price of potatoes though. That often keeps me awake at night, but nowhere close to how much the humidity does down here in this sweetheart little cottage.

I managed to catch the only rainy / cloudy days in London all summer it seems, when I visited for a couple of days in mid-July. Was considering a trip early September but it looks like the glorious weather is already coming to an end next week?! Just my luck.
