Are the old meanings of the words woman and man redundant?

Thadthimes · 13/08/2025 06:15

Various dictionary definitions seem
to have made the words woman and man redundant.

In short.

woman = XX chromosomes, adult human female (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always without the SRY genes)

woman = XY chromosomes, adult human male (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always with the SRY gene) but believe and feels they are XX and all the associated characteristics of an adult human female.

man = XY chromosomes, adult human male (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always with the SRY gene)

man = XX chromosomes, adult human female (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always without the SRY genes) but believe and feel they are XY.

If this was a venn diagram I’m not sure it would work.

AIBU to think we just need new words for the old biological meanings of these categories to save confusion?

Aquabluemouse · 13/08/2025 07:55

No we don’t need new definitions. I don’t know a single person who struggles with the concept of man and woman- men are men, women are women, and some men like to pretend to be women.

What we need are dictionaries and all the other bandwagon jumpers to stop pandering to lunacy and TikTok trends.

The dictionary definition and news reporting is not supporting this though

My local leisure centre still says people can use the changing room which matches gender. So, in practical terms, it's a mixed changing room

In Aptil, after Supreme Court, they told me they were still following advice from UK Active ie Stonewall law

I've just checked again and leisure centre changed policy in June / July ie actual law. Males must now use male toilets

I think we'll see a lot more of this ie the rainbow bunting comes down and policies are quietly changed. The cost of renovating toilets and changing rooms all over the UK to fully enclosed single cubicles would be huge

Dancingsquirrels · 13/08/2025 08:02

Harshreality · 13/08/2025 07:49

Then they are breaking the law. No woman would be OK with mixed changing. Only a man would.

I just double checked and it changed policy in June / July. After Supreme Court they told me otherwise. Delighted it's changed

I'm probably being stupid but can't we use "man", "woman", "transgender man" and "transgender woman" to describe the groups? Would that cause offense? A transgender woman is a transgender woman etc etc...

Edited

And then we get the TRA gem of
"These men are the same as any Black Woman"
Or
This Sub-group of women is the same that sub-group of women.

Which is why TRAs fought for a space
Transgender-woman
Transwoman

You have created 4 groups or classes with single sex groupings that is "transphobic".

The TRA only want 2 groups of mixed sex class.

RhaenysRocks · 13/08/2025 08:09

Thadthimes · 13/08/2025 06:31

But if trans identifying men are woman then they don’t work fine.
I think we need new words to define biology

But they're not.

Many people and dictionaries seem to say that men can be women and that sex can be changed after it is ‘assigned at birth’

It’s not ‘assigned’ anyway - it’s observed.

No, because they aren't. They are men.

They, as a group, have XY chromosomes and a penis and testicles and, lacking a vagina or ovaries or breasts, are unable to bear or nurse children.

Gosh, you really do need to go back to Biology GCSE don't you OP !

TBF "breasts" are a body part which both sex have.

We have chests, and breast tissues and nipples.

Female sexual development and male sexual development determine a different development pathway for breast which originate from the sexual reproduction role(class). Only a woman can grow a baby and she produces food from her body to feed her baby.

MushMonster · 13/08/2025 08:33

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/08/2025 08:16

It’s not ‘assigned’ anyway - it’s observed.

It is observed indeed. But then it goes into your birth certificate and from there, rest of your paperwork. And it is named as assigned at birth, by the doctor who observed it and decided they fit, with no reason of doubt into female or male.
And.... it is so to account for a very small % of babies whose sex does not match that observed at birth or they cannot be put into female/ male group by their external genitalia. The actual deveopment of sex differentiation during pregnancy is complex, involves a lot of chromosomes and hormones, from both the mother and the fetus. So, in some cases, assigned at birth and actual sex do not coincide and in some cases this is not found out till puberty.

Transwomen are women. Words can have more than one definition or complex definitions and the world doesn't collapse. TERFs are not radical. You're not rad at all.

Dunno whose side you're on, you troll of an OP, but nice wind up.

They are not in the UK.
Some women asked a Judge or two and its now official they are men🤷‍♀️

Naunet · 13/08/2025 08:43

OP, what you're suggesting would mean those people formally known as women, would no longer be protected in law, so we'd then have to start campaigning for our rights all over again, and once weve done that, theres nothing to stop men from appropriating us all over again. Seems far easier to just put some pressure on those responsible for editing dictionaries, to grow the fuck up.

Dancingsquirrels · 13/08/2025 07:42

My local leisure centre still says people can use the changing room which matches gender. So, in practical terms, it's a mixed changing room

If you are in the UK ask the staff for the email address of whoever is responsible for the LC and write and ask why they decided not to avail of the single sex exemption or if they has why they are allowing males into the womens changing areas

It would also add a massive ongoing up keep cost as even with purpose design and build cleaning etc takes more time and money
And due to design limits reterofits cost even more

I'm transphobic because I asked a question?

I am not saying or even hinting that you are transphobic

In the TWAW "world" asking the question is transphobic as you are showing you recognise that this group of men are not women.

Then in the TWAW "world" you go further and remove these men from the classification Woman and create a new class of Not-Women (Transgender-women or Transwomen) which would be described as acting from a position (or feeling) of transphobia

Nit pick

Assign is a "action" of placing a value on what is observed.
In this case the doctor records the observation when matching the criteria off a list.

And it is named as recorded at birth, by the doctor who observed it and decided they fit, (even with a reason of doubt about female or male.👀🤷‍♀️).

The doctor is looking at a pre-determined list which has only 2 possible outcome
Is female
Is male

Similar to cancer or pregnancy the doctor cant assign only record an answer about a fact.

Their observation and/or conclusion as to the fact may wrong and their documentation of their mistake may have consequence but the state of being (have cancer or not, is pregnant or not, is female or not) has not changed.
