Are the old meanings of the words woman and man redundant?

Thadthimes · 13/08/2025 06:15

Various dictionary definitions seem
to have made the words woman and man redundant.

In short.

woman = XX chromosomes, adult human female (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always without the SRY genes)

woman = XY chromosomes, adult human male (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always with the SRY gene) but believe and feels they are XX and all the associated characteristics of an adult human female.

man = XY chromosomes, adult human male (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always with the SRY gene)

man = XX chromosomes, adult human female (including extremely rare cases of other chromosomal configurations but always without the SRY genes) but believe and feel they are XY.

If this was a venn diagram I’m not sure it would work.

AIBU to think we just need new words for the old biological meanings of these categories to save confusion?

It if women’s changing rooms can be used by either men or women depending upon how they identify then what’s the point of labeling them women’s? The word is redundant no?

But isn’t the right thing to say, trans women are women?

No. HTH.

But they can't. That's the law

VioletandDill · 13/08/2025 07:27

Transwomen are women. Words can have more than one definition or complex definitions and the world doesn't collapse. TERFs are not radical. You're not rad at all.

Dunno whose side you're on, you troll of an OP, but nice wind up.

AgnesX · 13/08/2025 07:28

Don't believe everything you read. Simple.

As much as some might like to believe it there care still only two sexes.

CosmicEcho · 13/08/2025 07:30

This would be so confusing for those learning English. It’s not only about learning words, but about a whole movement that doesn’t translate to other languages and cultures.

BundleBoogie · 13/08/2025 07:32

Lowerback · 13/08/2025 06:53

Don’t be daft. The trans movement would just take over those new words too.

We need to hold onto the real meaning of woman and man.

Exactly.

Thankfully I have a hard copy of the dictionary from the 90s and it has the correct definition.

Once we oust the activists who have corrupted the dictionaries with their ideological nonsense, we can use that as a reference.

Womens changing rooms can’t be used by anyone who identifies. They can only be used by actual women.

Theswiveleyeballsinthesky · 13/08/2025 07:32

No we don't

'Trans' literally means the other side of or opposite of. Saying trans women are women saying 'the opposite of women' is women.
The only way that male people can be women is if you think 'women' are just a set of gendered stereotypes.
Both sexist and nonsense.

It is not possible since it has been clarified now that said spaces are separated based on sex, that not gender. Same for sports competitions, hospital wards and so on.
Would you prefer them called female and male changing rooms?

Theswiveleyeballsinthesky · 13/08/2025 07:38

so using the link súpplied by OP & typing in woman the first thing I get is this

then the secund one is the one OP linking too

No, ‘transwomen’ are men.

Some words do have more than one meaning but ‘woman’ will never include people born male.

The activists that corrupted the dictionary with their ideology will be removed and the entries corrected.

I’m not sure why you feel the need to be name calling?

Dancingsquirrels · 13/08/2025 07:40

Another approach could be to allow woman to have this definition ie include TW, but hold very firm on (1) definition of female ie sex based and (2) recording accurately when it matters eg crimes committed by males recorded as such

A number of organisations went all woke and were afraid of being sued or 'cancelled' so jumped on the bandwagon of allowing men into women's spaces. Now the Supreme Court has seen sense and accepted reality and women are gradually claiming back their safe spaces. Hallelujah!

Dancingsquirrels · 13/08/2025 07:42

Harshreality · 13/08/2025 07:26

But they can't. That's the law

My local leisure centre still says people can use the changing room which matches gender. So, in practical terms, it's a mixed changing room

RaininSummer · 13/08/2025 07:46

Thadthimes · 13/08/2025 06:31

But if trans identifying men are woman then they don’t work fine.
I think we need new words to define biology

But since this not true then the 'old' words are perfectly fine.

GoodPudding · 13/08/2025 07:48

Thadthimes · 13/08/2025 06:54

Many people and dictionaries seem to say that men can be women and that sex can be changed after it is ‘assigned at birth’

Many people believe whole load of nonsense…doesn’t make it true.

Dancingsquirrels · 13/08/2025 07:42

Then they are breaking the law. No woman would be OK with mixed changing. Only a man would.

Cambridge dictionary

  1. adult human female
an adult who lives and identifies as female though they may have been considered to have a different sex at birth: Mary is a woman who was assigned maleat birth. transgender woman Marie is a transgender woman (= she was considered to be male at birth). 1.
  1. adult human female
an adult adult human male or human female who lives and identifies as female adult human female though they may have been considered to have a different¹ the other sex¹ at birth: Mary is a woman adult human female who was assigned² male at birth. transgender woman adult human female Marie is a transgender woman adult human female (= she was considered to be¹ male at birth).

For the definition to work it has to be able to replace the word being looked up and have the sentence still work.

¹ Humans are classed by sexual reproductive function of which there are only 2 class.

² Humans are classed by sexual reproductive function of which there are only 2 class which are either observed or classified after medical investigations.
