To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

We are doing it because we are sick of the dog hating posts on MN. They always descend into hating dog owners, even responsible ones.

And there have been threads about posting pics of dogs and they still attract dog haters.

Not unkind at all.Have you seen the amount of dog threads on here, they’re on here all the time, dog bashing threads, people are fed up of hearing the same old thing, people moaning that they don’t just dislike, actually hate all dogs, now that’s unkind and belittle dog owners.It just not necessary to keep on saying it.
The photos are for other posters, not op.Nobody is ganging up on op, it just makes a nice change, for people who actually have experience of dogs, share their experiences and turn it around positively, so it’s not just another dog bashing thread.

It was also a bit unkind of the OP to say that our homes are smelly and dirty and suggest that childless people and the elderly have something missing in their life and feel the need to 'mother something'.

The OP is a perfect example of someone who knows that it would be so unkind to say something in real life that it would get her 'crucified' but is prepared to put it in writing on here.

I completely agree with you OP. Having to pay through the nose for everything from special food to insurance to house sitters, picking up shit, cleaning the animal, smelling dog breath in the face, the whole house stinking, walkies twice a day but not if it's over 22°, hassle from other dogs, picking up shit. People really are masochistic.

It’s funny how sharing dog pics gets called ganging up, when so many dog threads on MN end up hijacked by dog haters trying to ban pups and roast dog owners. Guess pups just know how to steal the spotlight!

P.S. You might not want to see the pics, but some of us are actually here for them. I almost ignored this post because it looked like another dog/owner bashing thread.

I’m not looking for validation or acceptance. I merely recounted those experiences to partly explain why I’m not keen on dogs.

To be honest, I’ve had overwhelmingly negative experiences. But sure I have seen well-behaved dogs occasionally. And to be honest, what I wrote was actually mainly about the odd behaviour of the owners rather than the dogs themselves.

I don't get why people would discuss their dogs at length tbh. What can you say about them? I love mine, but apart from saying where i just took him for a walk and what he had for breakfast that day, not sure I'd be able to stretch out a long conversation on him though!

I LOVE dogs 😍 I have a boxer & a GSD. I’m not keen on cats but my best mate has one & he’s quite sweet. I’m on the autistic spectrum & dogs are one of my ‘special interests.’ People are entitled to like what they like as long as they aren’t obnoxious about it.
I do get wound up by the dog haters who insist all dog owners fail to clean up after their dogs or allow them to spend all day barking. As someone who loves their dogs I can guarantee decent dog owners absolutely don’t do this. Dallas agrees

I can’t stand dogs and I very much enjoy being able to use forums as an outlet for my hatred as it is for some reason so socially unacceptable to say out loud, despite me being allergic so a major reason why I don’t like them is they make me feel really unwell. However I also agree with all your points.

I am starting to wonder if we need a topic for this on MN though - the dog lovers have one @MNHQ maybe we dog free people could have one as well to use to complain about all the problems without getting jumped on by people who like them.

Seriously though I can't help but slightly distrust people who have a genuine hate of dogs. Dislike, fine, but to hate an animal that has nothing to do with you I just find a bit odd. Says more about the person than the animal imo

You are completely entitled to your likes and dislikes but it is quite a strange comment to me when dogs are such individuals with so many different aspects of personality.
I work with dogs and i absolutely can't understand how anyone could dislike a sweet inoffensive little soul that doesn't impose itself on you but just wants a little comfort.
I do understand how someone does not want to own a dog though.
To me yabu and you're missing out because there are sooooooo many wonderful loving dogs out there , now if you said aibu to dislike dog owners .......🤔
