To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

Also it's totally subjective. To some people dogs are more important than people. Personally, my dog isn't more important than my children but the list is: children, brother, dog, everyone else.

But then I'm one of those weirdos who says hello to every dog I walk past :).

Sounds like you have little patience.Your friends don’t respect your personal space, it shouldn’t be necessary to say this to you, not all people who have dogs act the same.Instead of telling all dog owners, on an anonymous forum, wouldn’t it be better, just to tell your friends.

I like dogs but I don’t want one because I don’t think I have it in me to take good care of a dog. My Dad hated them (he wasn’t afraid, he just couldn’t understand having one).

It needs to be more socially acceptable to say that you aren’t keen and leave it at that. I’ve had people (on here and in real life) tell me that “A house isn’t a home without a dog!” and “I bet <my husband’s name> would love a dog, wouldn’t he?!?”. The honest answer is no - he isn’t very keen but it comes across as rude to say so.

Similarly, if someone gets a puppy there should be a limit to the amount of time that it gets talked about. If someone listens politely to an hour of conversation about the puppy then introduces a new topic, it would be great if the dog owners don’t go straight back to the topic of the puppy. But that is true of most conversation, not just puppy-related ones.

I have always found people that don't like dogs, to be cold and lacking in empathy.

YANBU. I love dogs, but don't expect everyone else to love, or even like, them. I have friends who don't like dogs and that is fine. We get on OK. I don't bang on about dogs and they don't bang on about disliking them. We talk about other mutual interests, life, other things.

I also have kids AND dogs, do don't fall into the demographic you describe. I love my dogs and kids in different ways, they are not the same thing (dogs are easier for starters 😂).

I fucking hate cats, our village is crawling with them, they shit all over my garden and kill the local wildlife. What is the point of them? Then they get run over on the road because their owners don't keep them safe, and everyone is all sadface on local FB groups and moaning about cars. 🙄

But life would be boring if we all liked the same things!

Dogs are beautiful souls who give everything to humans, even those who abuse them. They are loyal and faithful, and frankly far nicer than anyone human being.
The love of a dog and the happiness in their eyes as they greet you when you come in, nothing beats it.

I agree it feels like it’s socially unacceptable and taboo to say you don’t like dogs and wouldn’t have one.

It’s the same when you say you don’t like alcohol and don’t drink. Same shocked disgusted reaction from people.

Alcohol and dogs. You’re supposed to be obsessed with both and if you’re not you’re a complete weirdo. 😄

How are you with loose tarantulas, lions? I am sure you would love them to bits as they rip you apart!!

I like dogs but I think some of the posts are bordering on the unkind. The OP isn’t keen on dogs - she hasn’t said she wants to be cruel to them. Putting up a load of photos of dogs is either meant to change her mind or is a form of ganging up on the OP - neither is cool. Please go ahead and set up a “Look at the dogs’ pictures” thread - I’ll be glad to take a look. But leave the OP’s thread alone.
