To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

Out of interest, what is your view on cats?

Out of interest, what is your view on cats?

I know this was directed towards the OP but people always ask me the same. I’m also allergic to cats (although not as badly as dogs, i presume simply because they are smaller so produce fewer allergens) so i would never have one but they don’t bother me in the way dogs do. Even if I wasn’t allergic I still would probably not have one because the idea of a litter tray disgusts me but I quite enjoy looking at a cat going about its day whereas a dog I find over stimulating and instantly irritating.

Emmz1510 · 12/08/2025 20:02

Meh I’m not keen on them either. I have known and quite liked individual dogs that I’ve gotten to know belonging to relatives such as my mils bull mastiff, she was lovely. But on the whole no I’m not a fan and will never have one.
I can’t be doing with the hair, the smells, the crap, the slobbering, the staring while you eat, how damn needy they can be and how much they can restrict your freedom to go where you want when you want. I think for me, I like looking at them, occasionally petting them and can appreciate how cute and loving they are, even how brave, but would never contemplate owning one.
Don’t know why so many are jumping on you. It’s fine to post on here just seeking a bit of validation for what is generally held to quite a controversial viewpoint.

I'm allergic to pollen particularly tree pollen in spring, it reduces me to a snivelling, red eyed wreck. I still love flowers and trees though.

IceMaidenIceBear · 12/08/2025 20:05

I'm asthmatic and officially allergic to dogs, cats and horses ( I have been tested) but I have both dogs and cats. I am definitely worse for cats. But I don't see an allergy as causing a dislike of an animal. I find it incredibly frustrating - I do struggle when they moult and I need daily medication, but allergy to and aversion to are different things altogether.

Justchilling07 · 12/08/2025 20:05

@BananaCaramel Oh my goodness, you don’t mince your words do you😂 so you’ve come on here hoping that everyone has the same mindset.
You must be really disappointed, to see so many positive posts, many not buying into, yet another dog bashing thread.
Surely you’ve been spoilt for choice, there’s so many other dog threads, but yet, you’d like to start up another one, l find that really sad.
As for your allergies, if you don’t have a dog or are not around them, how can you be sure what’s causing it, have you actually been tested? There’s so many other causes for allergies.
You hate dogs, well the uk has always been dog friendly, to coin a phrase, a man’s best friend.
Personally, l guess there’s things in life l don’t like, l wouldn’t go as far as hate, but l let it go over my head, accept that people have a right to live their life as they choose, have a dog and care for it and not to get so angry, with matters that really aren’t any of my business

Theseventhmagpie · 12/08/2025 20:09

I’m quite sure I would really dislike you. I’m sure you don’t care just as I don’t care what your thoughts are about dogs. Not even sure why I’m posting this is such a dull thread 😂

😂That’s a really good point.

I don’t mind dogs. But I bloody hate dog owners!

Climbingrosexx · 12/08/2025 20:25

I love dogs, not a fan of cats and try to avoid kids but it doesnt make me an ogre, As long as we are all respectful and accept each others differences what does it matter?

I don’t mind dogs. But I bloody hate dog owners!

Er, why?

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2025 20:30

I love dogs and until recently had two. I couldn’t care less if you liked them. I’m not going to judge you, try to convince you or stop being your friend. I love cats even more but same thing.
A few of my friends have dogs but many don’t because they don’t care for them. So what? You need new friends if you’re feeling left out.

You bloody hate dog owners? Can you expand on that, what’s your reasoning for this?
Just a little fun fact for you, in 2025, 36% of households in the uk own at least 1 dog, which translates to approximately 13.5 million dogs across the uk.
That’s a lot of people to hate.

Someone picked the wrong user name.

😂 The irony.

My problem with dogs firmly lies with the owners.

Irresponsible, self centred and utterly uncaring about the impact their animal has on the local environment (shit everywhere) and people living in it (incessant barking).

Not all dog owners are like this. Same as not all parents have children that run riots in cafes and touch food etc with their snotty fingers 🤷🏼‍♀️ it’s called being a good owner/parent.

op you don’t have to like dogs, I hate cats, not a huge fan of 90% of children 🤣 all of my friends have children (I like theirs lol) they know my feelings towards children, no animosity about it. Friends with cats know I don’t like them, I wouldn’t however, tell them all the reasons I dislike them, that would likely piss them off.

sandybeaches74 · 12/08/2025 21:07

My opinion is that people who don’t like animals have something a bit wrong with them but 🤷‍♀️

BuildbyNumbere · 12/08/2025 21:09

Have a dog … and kids (still at home), not old or single. Enjoy walking said dog, good exercise for whole family and gets you out of the house … and home not dirty or smelly thanks.

BuildbyNumbere · 12/08/2025 21:15

Gowlett · 12/08/2025 14:34

I don’t like any animals. Never have.

They probably aren’t that fond of you tbf

BuildbyNumbere · 12/08/2025 21:17

Gofaster2023 · 12/08/2025 14:25

See, I don't have any issue with you not liking dogs. But when you start suggesting that people who love them are filling a void left by the lack of children you're starting to make yourself look like a bit of a tit.

Agree. Thousands of people that have a dog also have kids … myself included. Dog is A LOT easier tbh 🤣

Mischance · 12/08/2025 16:02

How are you with loose tarantulas, lions? I am sure you would love them to bits as they rip you apart!!

Stupid comment. How many people get ripped apart by a lion? So you hate lions because they might kill you? More chance of getting killed walking down the street, hate and avoid all people in that case!! Don’t want to get eaten by a lion? Don’t go near one … simple! Ditto sharks or anything else you might get eaten by 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Doesn’t mean you can’t still care about them.

luckylavender · 12/08/2025 21:26

pontivex · 12/08/2025 09:18

I could have written your exact same post replacing ‘dog’ with ‘kids’. Including groups of people who bond over discussing their children, discuss little else but in this case they do judge and treat you like a pariah for not having any.

People like different things…

Because dogs are just as important as children right? There I’ve said it. The bloody world has gone mad.

WiddlinDiddlin · 12/08/2025 21:27

I don't care if you don't like dogs.

I care if you try to justify this with reasons that could easily apply to myriad beings/things/situations.

ie. 'dogs are dirty'

Yup, so are humans, and you're more likely to catch something from a human.

Or reasons that are actually entirely down to the human in charge of the animal being an irresponsible twat... like letting dogs run up to strangers or jump on furniture. That should be on your list of 'reasons I don't like humans' rather than 'reasons I don't like dogs.'

So just say you're not a fan and if people are twatty and push you for a reason, just say you simply don't like them, the reasons are not relevant, because they're not, are they?

If dogs didn't smell, weren't dirty, were always 100% perfectly behaved - you still would not like them, because you don't like dogs.

I don't like wasps. I don't care how clean and polite they may be, I still won't like them.

My dog is more important. To me.
Your kids are more important. To you.
It is that simple.
