To not like dogs

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

I was so pleased recently when MIL and SIL dogs passed away within a few weeks of one another (not that I wished them dead they were very old and it was expected) they’ve always moaned about not seeing the dc at their homes (dc are allergic) I said to dh how it’ll be great now we can have a better relationship with them go to visit , help out etc . The dc were happy. Then they both got new dogs 🤦

If there was someone in my life who was pleased when my dog died I would definitely need a new dog/excuse not to spend time with them.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/08/2025 14:42

I hate dog haters, will that do 😂

@Gowlett Not sure why you need to announce that, it serves no purpose.

somewhereintheworld · 12/08/2025 14:43

I think you should spend some time around dogs and you would soon change your mind. Dogs are absolutely gorgeous creatures and I can't understand how anyone could hate them.

Congratulations!

I love all animals, always have.

Shall we move on?

I don’t have dog owing to lack of time, space, energy and money but I love dogs and always talk to any I meet when I’m out. I also have two doggy friends I go and see. I think what dogs give us is companionship, support and affection. Most dogs make it very clear when they’re pleased to see you and always know when something’s wrong and are ready to be stroked or give your hand a reassuring lick!

I can honestly say it bothers me zero if someone tells me they don't like dogs. Or cats. Or children. I love dogs but have a couple of close friends who just don't like them. And thats fine. I always remember a radio piece I was listening to though that said never trust someone who has a dislike of animals as they're generally not nice people....not sure how true that is though Smile

I dunno, it's a bit of a sweeping generalised statement to say that people who don't like animals are untrustworthy. Maybe it's something to do with them having sociopathic traits 😬😳

It's fine not to like dogs - I don't like them either.

It's fine to like them too - incomprehensible to me, but we are all different.

What is not OK is when dog lovers inflict their dogs on you and cannot respect how you feel. I have friends with dogs; they know I do not like dogs; and they behave accordingly - i.e. do not let their dogs be a nuisance to me.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 12/08/2025 14:51

lookpar · 12/08/2025 11:37

@MyMauveWaspNo I understand to dog lovers that’s not nice to hear, but you can’t compare them to children. They’re animals at the end of the day. It’s not the same thing

But i guess you could say we are human animals - we're basically mammals aren't we, at the end of the day?

Isittimeformynapyet · 12/08/2025 14:51

pontivex · 12/08/2025 10:05

Cool thanks. Doesn’t change my dislike of children. I’m also of the option that the world is massively overpopulated and we could do with a good few billion less humans hence why I don’t subscribe to the human Ponzi scheme.

Dog do incredible things for humans and society in general. Guide dogs, support dogs, search and rescue, on farms, drug and bomb sniffers, police and army. I’m guessing that doesn’t change your dislike of them either.

Thats fine. People like and don’t like different things.

Human Ponzi scheme 😄 As a childless woman I like that.

Children used to be useful, but that got banned. You'd think they'd reconsider in light of the cost of living crisis.

(I am joking btw)

Justchilling07 · 12/08/2025 13:06

Don’t know where you go to😂 I’ve never been to a cafe or a pub, where dogs are barking at each other and roaming around.Quite the opposite, quite often there’s only one dog, lying on floor, not causing any disturbance. That’s probably why, cafes and pubs allow dogs.Really don’t get, why you feel the need to say, dogs don’t have the same rights as people, hmm yes we know, but if it’s ok with you, people will take their dogs out with them.

My dog comes with me into dog friendly cafes and sits quietly under the table. Nobody knows she's there.

HappiestSleeping · 12/08/2025 14:52

lookpar · 12/08/2025 11:43

all the responses saying it’s not a big deal I agree that’s my whole point. But in person whenever it comes up I’m made to feel awful for saying I’m not a dog lover or pets in general. So it was more aimed at anyone who has done this to someone, I want to know why it’s such a big deal to them

I work with dogs, and I own a dog. Makes no difference to me whether you like dogs or not. Or anyone else to be honest.

It's true that we could all benefit from more dog owners understanding that dogs are dogs, and not babies, but it is what it is. I shouldn't complain too much as training said dog owners is my living.

Mischance · 12/08/2025 14:52

Most dogs make it very clear when they’re pleased to see you and always know when something’s wrong and are ready to be stroked or give your hand a reassuring lick! - I have no desire whatsoever to receive said lick!

Dog owners take note - I am not alone! Do not let your dogs do this!! - to anyone.......

NavyRose · 12/08/2025 14:53

I've seen a few threads on this topic now and I really dont understand the constant comparisons between dogs and children. As soon as someone pipes up with "I don't like dogs in cafés" or whatever someone else comes in with "What about children who run around wahhh" as if it has to be one or the other. Really don't get it.

DiordreBarlow · 12/08/2025 14:53

Totally agree with you @somewhereintheworld , but will you not think of the poor dogs who would have to suffer these foul blisters.

IceMaidenIceBear · 12/08/2025 14:53

Awww ❤ Give your gorgeous (and very happy looking) dog a neck rub for me @JackGrealishsBobbySocks
