To not like dogs

lookpar · 12/08/2025 09:09

Awkward subject, but I recently was in a social group and everyone except me was bonding over their love of dogs and I just knew I had to keep quiet but of how socially unacceptable it is to dislike them.

I’m not scared of them, I haven’t had any majorly horrible experiences to make me hate dogs. I just simply don’t like them. I would never find a dog cute, I think they make your home smelly and dirty, having to walk them and look after them just seems like a form of personal torture I don’t know why anyone would want that. But I could NEVER say that thought out loud I would be crucified!

Also, another thing I’ve noticed is, it’s a certain demographic of people who seem to be obsessed with their dogs, people without kids, or older people whose kids have moved out. I may be wrong but it’s like this need to mother something/someone.

But anyway, I know dog lovers will come for me that’s fine I just genuinely want to know, why is it such a problem for dog lovers when someone else doesn’t like them?

I have kids, and when someone says they don’t want kids or don’t like them I don’t then judge them and start scrutinising them, I sort of agree lol! (Obviously love my own)

I don’t like them either! I hate it when their owners don’t move them as they approach others in the street. I mean you can love your dog as much as you like, but doesn’t mean everyone else has to! Move ‘it’ away!

Who do you think you are! it’s perfectly legal, acceptable for dogs to be out for a walk in a street,
if you feel that strongly, cross over. Why should you?
Because it makes you angry.

Replace "dogs" with "children" and you might be on to something!

I have 3 dogs and I don't like them often 😂😂 especially today when one knob dog ate some dead animal, vomited it up in his crate, and the vomit had maggots in it! So I dislike him today.
It wouldn't bother me if anyone said they didn't like dogs, I don't feel all warm and fuzzy with kids but I dont think I'd be brave enough to say that in a group 😂😂

I don’t want ‘it’ to come up to me and smell me or touch me. It is not acceptable and frankly disgusting.

Again, you might love you ‘fur baby’, but others don’t need to and don’t want to be touched or smelt by them!

That reminds me of my mum's old lurcher who used to be travel sick in the car. We had to take her somewhere so didn't give her breakfast. Took her for a walk and she ate a load of fox poo.. Then later on, threw it up in the car. That was, um, special.

This does not sound usual. Dogs are generally sniffing at things on the pavement, not other passers-by (though sometimes they might try to stick their nose in a shopping bag if it has sausages in it!). If you notice dogs are frequently sniffing at you particularly, it is definitely worth a visit to a GP. Not to be alarmist but unusual attentions from dogs often indicate a medical problem. They can detect all sorts and frequently save lives with their wondrous noses.

Aww. My brother has labs and their most recent triumph was for one to crap on a dead, maggot-ridden seagull, then the other dog rolled on that.

Or she stinks of pork.

I hope your brother didn't have to travel home in a car with the stinker @JackGrealishsBobbySocks .

Haha, he did, but he was happy it was his girlfriend's car and not his.😁

I don’t refer to dogs as fur babies, so give up with the patronising tone. You sound like a very angry person.
Whether you like it or not the uk has always been dog friendly. As l said people, legally can walk their dogs, in most places, there’s nothing you can do about it.
You’re massively overreacting, l mean really how many dogs have come up to you to smell you? I don’t believe they have.Dog’s are quite intuitive, would pick up, straight away, on your aggression.
It’s actually your attitude that is, frankly unacceptable and disgusting, but there we go, unlike you, l’ll just let it go over my head, because life is too short to be so angry.

Yes, was thinking the same think, if random dogs are always coming up to this person just to sniff them, that’s not usual.Yes agree, this person might find it helpful, go to their doctors for a check up.

Oh do one. I have sensory issues and even I am not going to start a war over a dog daring to sniff my leg. Get a grip.

I love my furbaby, and I don't expect you to. In fact, I would rather you actually fucked off and left me and my dog alone.

Catladywithoutacat · 14/08/2025 02:33

my best friend isn’t keen on animals at all especially dogs, my other best friend doesn’t like cats.
I own dogs and cats. We all respect each other feelings doesn’t impact anything only when someone tries to force their opinions on you or beliefs it’s annoying

Everything you described as a dog trying to belittle them as “it’s” and other ignorant comments. seems like self projection. I don’t think you like yourself very much so take it out on innocent creatures. What an unpleasant individual.

It shouldn't be unacceptable to not like dogs, or any other animal for that matter. And there should be plenty of dog-free places for people who don't like dogs to go to.

Start a campaign for dog free places. I’ll happily back it.

TheaBrandt1 · 14/08/2025 06:58

I don’t wish them harm but those pics leave me stone cold I am definitely missing the dog gene. I resent it when they impinge on me barking / jumping up and muddying my coat/ being in cafes.

For politeness sake I would never say this to friends who have dogs and I pretend to like them but I don’t. Bar one one friend who has the perfect dog even I can see the appeal of her but the others are just annoying, My friends adore them and we are like minded on most things so wonder why I’m like this!

In our local group of about 15 4 of us don’t have dogs. We can speak openly about our non dog loving ways but only when it’s just us 4!

There are plenty of dog free places. And it isn't unacceptable for people not to like dogs, nobody has said it is. It's perfectly normal for people to have preferences for things.

What is unacceptable, however, is threads like this repeatedly being started purely to ridicule, demean and threaten dogs and the people who share their lives with dogs.

None of us really care if you don't like dogs, that's fine, we just get fed up with you finding it necessary to continually tell us how much you hate them and us. Why can't you keep your hate to yourselves?

TheaBrandt1 · 14/08/2025 07:08

You are proving ops point with your dramatic statements. “Ridicule and demean” dog owners - she just said she didn’t like dogs!

You can say it’s acceptable to not like dogs but that’s simply not true. Maybe if you live online but if I intimated to my lovely dog loving friends that I didn’t like their dogs they would be a hurt and think I was rude. You wouldn’t tell a parent you couldn’t stand their kid would you!

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 14/08/2025 07:08

I kind of get what OP means. I used to work with a small group of people who were absolutely obsessed with their dogs; constantly talking about them, dropping photos daily in the group chat and referring to them as if they were human (e.g.“my baby loves this” or “my little girl did that”). Got to the stage you literally couldn’t even have a conversation about work without them bringing their dogs into the conversation.

As someone who doesn’t dislike dogs, but doesn’t have dogs, doesn’t want to have dogs, and doesn’t find dog photos particularly cute (unlike cat photos - although I actually like dogs more than cats; just find cats more photogenic!), it was hard not to feel completely outside of this bizarre clique.

It would be the same for any obsession (and I wouldn’t want non-stop talk about someone’s children / husband / holidays either), but some “dog people” do seem to be quite extreme.
