To feel inconvenienced by a tragic accident?

OnemargarIta · 11/08/2025 11:36

I'm currently in Italy (staying in Rome) for three nights. It's my first foreign break in a warm country and I've been so excited and saved up especially.

We booked an excursion for today consisting of a trip to Sorrento where we'd spend time exploring, visiting shops and enjoying local food - and then on to Pompeii on the route back.

We've spent the whole morning/day so far stuck in traffic on the motor way. We are so behind schedule we can now no longer go to Sorrento first because Pompeii closes at 5.30 and there won't be time. A sit down restaurant meal will now be replaced by a takeaway which will be eaten on the coach.

We've just been told the cause of the traffic jam and it's because somebody has died in a collision on the motorway.

Instead of feeling saddened about the loss of life I just feel inconvenienced and pissed off that the highlight of my trip has been ruined.

Does this make me a shitty person? It just occurred that it might 😳

How do you think OP is coming across with her posts? She sounds bonkers to me.

Quick! Look over there!

Nice try.

Im not the only one who thinks she's coming across as odd.

I haven't read the full thread but am fascinated by how the OP is being berated for choosing to go on an excursion by coach to Sorrento and Pompeii.

Exactly you haven’t read the whole thread, so how can you possibly know. Many posts were deleted by MN because they were disgusting and upsetting, some posters talking about suicide, making light of it and laughing at it, also saying it was an inconvenience to them, other posters joining in, saying it was funny, op’s denying this happened, because as l said the posts have been deleted can’t be crossed referenced.Op, has told me l’m making allegations, this didn’t happen, calling me 'Doris’, if anyone disagrees with her, just talks down to them and gets nasty.
Have you are actually read the comments, of how op has spoken to other posters? This isn’t just about a trip to Sorrento.

Justchilling07 · 12/08/2025 11:28

BondAway25 · 12/08/2025 09:11

Because that's the subject-matter of the OP's post? If you don't like the topic, scroll on

& as MN have deleted your post I guess they agree. I didn't report it by the way, I prefer posts to remain standing.

your post was offensive. You even said you knew it would cause offence ! It was not what the OP was asking about. Plenty of us saw it. So just stop digging.

Edited

Yes, l read this person’s posts too, amazing how they’re still arguing 'digging’ when many of their posts have been deleted.

For anybody who hasn't read the full thread, just click on the OP's post and then click 'view all'. You'll get the gist of it.

Nataliaa · 12/08/2025 12:17

I don’t think it makes you a shitty person, because you’ve actually questioned it. A shitty person with absolutely no empathy, wouldn’t even consider they are a shitty person! You’re just human. It’s possible to feel upset that your day is ruined, but also to see the bigger picture. Someone out there has tragically lost their life. You are all safe and well and that is the main thing. Your feelings are still valid.

They won’t be able to read the deleted comments, will they, so they won’t really get the full understanding of how this thread has gone (posting about suicide) and why other posters, have found this thread to be, in very poor taste.

Yes. Quite an odd tangent to go off on and a bit unreasonable.

OnemargarIta · 12/08/2025 10:16

Lol you what? At no point have I said that the car accident could be helped, I simply expressed feeling inconvenienced that it had.

Oh my goodness, you’ve just said to @XWKD
How would it be possible? (for someone who’s in a tragic accident, to know their death is an inconvenience to others) So isn’t that the real point, if someone dies in a tragic accident, their intention wasn’t to cause you, personally, inconvenience.

No, unfortunately not, which is a shame really. They might get an idea of the OP's character though, hopefully.

WhatWouldJeevesDo · 12/08/2025 12:43

Yes. Quite an odd tangent to go off on and a bit unreasonable.

She's nut being berated at all. She's being advised it was never going to be the day the tour company sold it to her as, and she's missed out on what she thought it would have been like, not what it actually would have been like. That if she's booked anything else with them she might be better cancelling & booking with a realistic tour company.

not berated at all.

Yep, but I'm leaving her to dig her own hole. Many of us saw her original post before it was deleted. 🙅🏻‍♀️

I see why MN delete them, but I'd rather they were left so everyone can see the vile posts.

ohyesido · 12/08/2025 18:58

Don’t feel bad. It’s because you didn’t know the person. No more no less.

Justchilling07 · 12/08/2025 20:25

@ohyesido It’s kind of really the point, op doesn’t feel bad, annoyed yes.

ohyesido · 12/08/2025 20:30

@Justchilling07 I meant she shouldn’t feel bad for not feeling bad, or for feeling the way she feels

Volturra · 12/08/2025 20:38

CinnamonCinnabar · 11/08/2025 19:20

What an odd response - Pompeii is only there for you to visit because it was buried by a volcano, killing an estimated 16000 people in the region. I've nothing against it being a tourist attraction but don't pretend it's not a scene of mass fatalities.

There's about a 100 casts of dead people preserved by the pyroclastic flow.

This is a really weird take. You make it sound like it's a 'tourist attraction' (it's actually a lot more than that) because people ghoulishly want to visit somewhere lots of people died. If that's not what you mean, what is your point? That the op should be solemn and more than usually sensitive to matters of mortality on the occasion of visiting such a place?

Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other sites are unique because you actually get an insight into Roman life at that you'll never get anywhere else. Pompeii has only been preserved because of a natural disaster that killed many people, yes, but the site is not about death at all.

ohyesido · 12/08/2025 20:30

She’s been pretty vocal on here, really don’t think it’s that she’s feeling bad, assuming she’s a woman, but who knows, from reading all their posts.
Has been said many times, it’s not just about the excursion, it’s the way they’ve responded to poster’s, name calling. Not acknowledging that the thread turned really nasty, in any situation it’s not ok to laugh about suicide, which was posted, many times.Quite rightly, these posts were taken down, now they won’t even acknowledge, it was completely unnecessary and upsetting for others to read, can’t remember the names they called people, there was so many.Even had the audacity to say l was making allegations, just because these posts had been taken down by MN, can’t be cross referenced. So op’s attitude is, if it’s not there, anymore, it didn’t happen.

This thread should be closed now.
OP asked if she was a shitty person and it has been determined that yes, she is indeed an extremely shitty person.
Anyone coming to the thread now to defend her will be missing most of the replies as they've been deleted.
She showed blatant disregard for anyone's feelings and as Justchilling07 says, she lied about posts that have been deleted that were joking about suicide.
I'm actually surprised this thread has stayed up as long as it has.
It's made me realise that there are some vile people here on mumsnet.
The OP being very much one of them.
Strange, also, that this seems to be their first thread 🤔
I can't find any previous activity from them.

Can you point to a date and time when one of the OP’s posts was removed? I’m not seeing it.

I agree. I may be wrong but I feel the generation that lived through the war would given short shrift to the idea that sadness is ever a duty. Solemnity on occasion yes, but a traffic jam isn’t a funeral.

It wasn't the OP's posts, it was someone else's.

Justchilling07 · 12/08/2025 22:12

@Letmehaveabloodyusernameplease
Yes completely agree.I’ve only got 1 username, l don’t change my username, for different threads, agree it’s strange, there’s no previous activity from username, onemargarlta.
On one, of their posts op said they recognise, many of these usernames, that argue with the op’s and at that point l realised, it’s because we keep our original usernames.
But yes the posters who are defending op, are missing many of the replies that have been deleted.
Yes hopefully this thread will be closed soon.
And no doubt will’ll never see anymore threads from
this username again!
